Highlights of the weekend: Table toppers win as European and relegation races heat up

All the table toppers in Europe's top five leagues secured impressive wins during the weekend, while their closest competitors also picked up decisive wins to stay in the race for the league title.

The eventful Premier League weekend saw all of Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Brentford secure massive wins, while Manchester City concluded the weekend with a landmark victory at Anfield.

Bayern Munich and Dortmund in Germany, Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, PSG and RC Lens in France, all stayed on course with wins, while Inter were able to stretch their Serie A advantage on a weekend where Milan was not in action.

Below are the highlights of the weekend in each of the top five European leagues as the final stretch of the season approaches.

English Premier League

Arsenal extended their winning streak to four games after an impressive 3-0 victory over Sunderland in the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, which saw them set a new Premier League record for the longest unbeaten home run against newly promoted teams.

Martin Zubimendi gave them the lead towards the halftime break with a spectacular low effort from the edge of the box to take his league goal tally to five, already his most productive campaign in front of goal yet in his debut season in England.

Viktor Gyokeres came off the bench to add a second-half brace as the Gunner sealed a win that saw them spend the day nine points clear at the top, their biggest lead since the final day of the 2003-04 season.

Chelsea returned to winning ways in the league after their Carabao Cup semi-final exit to Arsenal during the week, thanks to Cole Palmer's hat-trick away to relegation strugglers Wolves.

The Englishman converted two penalties to give Liam Rosenior's team a 2-0 lead, with the second being his 50th Chelsea goal on the occasion of his 100th start for the club he joined from Manchester City in the summer of 2023.

He completed his later in the first half, firing home a first-time effort following a low cross from Marc Cucurella, but the visitors pulled one back through Tolu Arokodare after the interval to deny Robert Sanchez a clean sheet. Chelsea did win the clash, 3-1.

Manchester United finally put an end to their longest run without a win against Spurs, as Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes struck in either half to conquer Thomas Frank's charge, who lost their captain to a straight red card earlier in the half.

The Red Devils had not won in any of their eight previous meetings with Tottenham, but had their rivals well placed to secure their first win after Cuti Romero was given his marching orders just before the half hour for a stamp on Casemiro.

Man United took advantage of the situation and took the lead through Mbeumo following a well-worked corner kick, while Bruno Fernandes scored nine minutes from time to seal a 2-0 win, and extend their winning run under Carrick to four.

In the biggest Premier League clash of the weekend, Manchester City came from a goal down to silence Anfield with a 2-1 victory, and completed the league double over Liverpool for the first time in the Premier League era.

After a goalless first half, Dominik Szoboszlai gave Liverpool the lead in the final quarter with a sensational free-kick, but Bernardo Silva leveled matters six minutes from time, before Erling Haaland converted an added-time penalty to complete the comeback.

Rayan Cherki's third was overturned while Szoboszlai was shown a straight red card in a frantic finale, but City, who won the reverse fixture 3-0 secured their first league double over their host in 89 years.

Aston Villa secured a point in their travel to the Vitality Stadium, where their host Bournemouth threatened decimation, but thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, they were able to walk away with a draw.

The visitors started bravely and took an early lead through Morgan Rogers, but after debutant Rayan leveled matters for Andoni Iraola's side, they remained the more likely to go on to win it, forcing Martinez into seven smart saves.

In the other games, Brentford, who secured their first-ever Premier League win away to Aston Villa a week ago edged Newcastle United in a five-goal thriller to secure another historical first-ever Premier League win at St. James' Park.

Despite taking an early lead through Sven Botman, Newcastle United trailed 2-1 for the most part of the game as Vitaly Janelt and Igor Thiago scored to turn it around for the visitors. Bruno Guimaraes leveled again from the spot 11 minutes from time but Dango Ouattara had the final say with the winner six minutes later.

On his Crystal Palace debut, Evan Guessand set up Ismaila Sarr for the game's only goal as the Eagles ended a run of 12 games winless with a narrow victory away to Brighton, a result that moved them up to 13th.

Leeds United overcame a heavy home loss to Arsenal by beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 in the Friday night kickoff, where Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the third to reach double figures for only the third campaign in his Premier League career.

Crysencio Summerville and Valentin Castellanos scored to give West Ham United a comfortable 2-0 away win at Burnley in the relegation derby, while Everton came from a goal down to beat Fulham in Craven Cottage.
