How Liam Rosenior handed Carabao Cup final ticket to Arsenal on a silver platter

Arsenal have become the first team to secure their place in Wembley ahead of the Carabao Cup final in March after securing a 1-0 win at the Emirates on Tuesday night to complete a semi-final double over Chelsea.

Kai Havertz scored the lone goal to secure the win for Mikel Arteta's side, who headed into the night with an advantage, having won the first leg 3-2 at Stamford Bridge back in January, although they could have easily won the game on the night.

However, with just one goal in it, Chelsea was just a goal away from getting back into the tie, but in the absence of Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Mikel Merino, Liam Rosenior set up Chelsea as if they were the ones that had a lead to protect.

It makes it a comfortable evening of football for the North Londoners, who didn't have to do much, even defensively, to ensure that the visitors had nothing going for them, before a late Kai Havertz goal made it both legs ended in wins.

How Liam Rosenior played into the hands of Arsenal

Chelsea needed to score a goal to give themselves a chance of reaching the final, but their manager Liam Rosenior set up an eleven of five defenders, two defensive midfielders, and two strikers, with zero threats on the flanks.

Unfortunately, the Blues had to do without Pedro Neto, who was not in the matchday squad, while Estevao Willian was just returning from a compassionate leave that saw him return to Brazil for personal reasons.

Nevertheless, they did have Cole Palmer, and Alejandro Garnacho in condition to start, especially given the impact the latter had off the bench in the first leg and Cole Palmer's form of late, which had seen him register three goal involvements in two games.

Rosenior headed into the game with no width, like a team with a lead to protect, and while some fans and pundits will rush to his defence that Arsenal were a superior team, the fact that Chelsea, who had nothing to lose but approached the game more cautiously raises eyebrows.

Without quality in attack, Arsenal defenders didn't break a sweat, especially in the first half, where the visitors' only shot at goal came from Enzo Fernández from outside of the box, with Kepa punching the ball to safety.

For a team that has scored two set-piece goals in two meetings against the Gunners this season before Tuesday night, Chelsea wouldn't offer any threat from the opportunities, and even though they attempted 14 shots, only two were able to test Kepa.

It was just what Arsenal would have wanted, and the introduction of Cole Palmer and Estevao Willian for the final 30 minutes couldn't change anything, because the hosts are already settled in the game, and with time running out, desperation didn't do them any good.

Kai Havertz, the last player in the pitch that would have scored a goal from Chelsea's perspective, ended up running free at Robert Sanchez, rounded him up, and slotted the ball into the empty net before pointing to the Arsenal badge as he wheeled away in celebration.

Insult added to injury for the visitors, but they never looked like they had a chance because they didn't lineup like they wanted to. Going all out against Arsenal may not guarantee a win, but not doing so with a deficit is not giving yourself a chance at all.

This is the first time Arsenal will be progressing to a final since the start of Mikel Arteta's first full season, having failed to progress in all previous semi-finals across all competitions, with the Champions League, Europa League, and the Carabao Cup included.

The result means Arsenal have now gone 10 games across all competitions without losing to Chelsea, while they recorded their 20th clean sheet in 38 games across all competitions so far in the ongoing campaign.

The Premier League leaders now away the winner of the second semi-final between Newcastle United and Manchester City, with the Cityzens already 2-0 up ahead of kickoff at Etihad on Wednesday.

For a Chelsea side that had scored in 15 straight games before the trip to Arsenal, it is disappointing that they never had themselves a chance in a game where they desperately needed to score, but that is now a sailed ship.

What next for Liam Rosenior and Chelsea?

A semi-final exit in a Cup competition is always disappointing, but it does show the strength of the team, getting so close to reaching Wembley, but Chelsea are still active in three other competitions and will be keen to return to winning ways this weekend.

The Blues have won six of eight games under Liam Rosenior, with the only two defeats coming in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal. They have an automatic ticket to the Champions League round of 16 and are into the next round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The season could still turn out good for the World Cup, but keeping their cool in the next four months will be decisive, especially amid fierce competition to finish in the Premier League top five and earn a slot in next season's Champions League.

Chelsea return to league action this weekend with a visit to Molineux to face relegation-bound Wolves, who have one Premier League win all season and have already lost to the Blues twice this season.
