Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

The weekend presents a host of derby games, from El Clásico in Spain to the London derby in England and clashes of the heavyweights in several top European leagues. We take a preview of all the top 10 selected fixtures you should watch out for this weekend.

From the meeting between Real Madrid and Barcelona, which will decide who tops the table at the end of the weekend, to Eberechi Eze's reunion with his Palace teammates in the Emirates, while two big fixtures also come up in Italy, with four teams colliding.

Weekend Preview: El Clásico and 10 fixtures to watch

1. Real Madrid vs. Barcelona: Santiago Bernabeu hosts the first El Clásico

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

Mbappé Madrid p10-manst to Barcelona in the first El Clásico of the season, in what will be a top-of-the-table clash as Xabi Alonso's charge leads the way by a point.

Barcelona have enjoyed success in the fixture, boasting a perfect record in their four meetings last season. Real Madrid, with a new manager, will hope for a change of fortune and rejuvenate the form that saw them win all four meetings in the previous season.

The two clubs labored to win last time out in LaLiga, with Barcelona needing a last-gasp goal by substitute Ronald Araujo to down Girona at home, while Real Madrid also won late on thanks to Kylian Mbappé's goal at 10-man Getafe.

Barcelona are huge favorites owing to their reputation from last season and Real's poor showing in the derby a few weeks back, but the host are well capable of rewriting their own narrative when it comes down to the Clasico, especially with a lot at stake on Sunday.

Barcelona will welcome a host a injured stars, highlighted by the return of Ferran Torres and Frenkie de Jong, while the participation of Jules Koundé remains uncertain, and Raphinha has been ruled out.

Real Madrid will be without David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger for the match, but welcome Dean Huijsen, who has had a mixed start to his time in Spain following his £50 million move from Bournemouth in the summer.

Kylian Mbappé has not won a Clásico but has scored five times in the last three, while the likes of Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, and Raphinha will hope to remain decisive against their fiercest rival.

Prediction: Real Madrid 2-3 Barcelona

2. Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace: Arsenal host giants slayers in derby

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

Arsenal face a tricky test this weekend as Crystal Palace visit the Emirates Stadium for a London derby fixture that has barely been predictable, even though the Gunners have been dominant.

The Gunners have won each of their last six games across all competitions, their longest streak since eight between April and August last year, and head into Sunday's game on the back of a 4-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.

They have kept nine clean sheets in 12 games so far and haven't conceded in their last four, facing a combined one shot on target in their last three games.

Glasner's Palace just primed since the turn of the year, and their achievement in this period have been unprecedented by their own standards, as it featured their first major titles and longest unbeaten streak.

Manchester City is the only member of the big six to have beaten them since the turn of the year, and they have avenged that by beating Pep Guardiola's charge in the FA Cup final in May, while they also held Arsenal to a draw in a visit to N5 in that period.

Nevertheless, Arsenal still boasts superiority in this fixture and is unbeaten in the last seven at home, winning three, all of which have come in the last four.

Palace have won just one in their last 12 meetings with Arsenal altogether, a 3-0 victory in Selhurst Park towards the end of the 2021-22 season, which has also remained their only win over the Gunners to date.

Eberechi Eze, who was on the scoresheet the last time both clubs faced off, will come up against his former teammates, having made the return to his boyhood club in the summer.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Crystal Palace

3. Napoli vs. Inter: Champions do battle in Naples

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

It is pretty tight up there in the Serie A summit, and that does not look like changing anytime soon, as every weekend presents the kind of fixtures that frustrate title contenders. This week, it is the last two league winners that lock horns.

Third-place Napoli play host to second Inter with both currently on 15 points, one behind leaders Milan, who would have the opportunity to establish a four-point lead when they play host to newly promoted Pisa on Friday night.

Both Napoli and Inter will be keen on maximum points, as a loser could find themselves out of the top seven if results elsewhere do not go their way.

On paper, these are the two best teams in the Serie A for a while, and even though Inter has the edge, Napoli has held their own recently, and the two sides boast one win apiece in their last five league meetings.

Antonio Conte will head into the meeting with his former club on a poor run of back-to-back defeats, which makes it three losses in their last five since their unbeaten league start ended, while Inter have overcome their worst start in over two decades.

Prediction: Napoli 1-1 Inter

4. Lazio vs. Juventus: The battle of those who fell off

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

After falling to their first Serie A loss to Como since 1952, Juventus finally picked up an inevitable first loss of the season and extended their winless run to six, falling to seventh place after holding first place earlier in the season.

They followed it with another loss in the Champions League in midweek against Real Madrid, although Igor Tudor's charge did put up a better performance, especially their goalkeeper Mateo Di Gregorio, who was particularly outstanding.

They return to league action on Sunday evening, looking to put an end to a run of seven winless games across all competitions, away to Lazio, whose inconsistencies have been real issues, and are slowly losing ground in the league year in and year out.

Having missed out on Europe last season, Maurizio Sarri's minions have won just two of seven league games so far, picking up eight points altogether. For Lazio, this game holds so much importance, as another loss could see them join the relegation battle.

Their most recent meetings have been pretty even, with each side boasting superiority when playing at home. Lazio have won three and drawn one of their last four home games against Juventus, but Sunday's visitors have won each of the last five when playing at home.

Prediction: Lazio 1-2 Juventus

5. Lyon vs. Strasbourg: Legendary name meets quick riser

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

Having won their battle against relegation from the top-flight due to financial mishap, Olympique Lyonnaise have started the season better than they have the previous ones, and the hope is renewed around the Groupama.

This weekend presents a very tough test against the quick-rising Strasbourg, who have established themselves as one of the top teams in the Ligue 1 in recent years.

After back-to-back league defeats, Paulo Fonseca's charge find themselves fifth in the table, when victories could have taken them to the summit. The Portuguese manager will be keen to return to winning ways in the league after their European success against Basel.

For Strasbourg, a massive point against PSG last time was the least deserved, having taken a 3-1 lead against the champions, and their plan for a return to winning ways was met with another stalemate with Jagiellonia Bialystok in the Conference League.

Including penalty shootouts, Lyon have won seven and lost just twice in ten home meetings with Strasbourg, and have won each of the last three, a record Fonseca's will hope to build on, having won his two home games against the visitors while in Lille.

Prediction: Lyon 2-2 Strasbourg

6. Bayer Leverkusen vs. Freiburg: What next after first Hjulmand loss

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

A few days after suffering a humiliating home loss to PSG in the Champions League, their first under Kasper Hjulmand, Bayer Leverkusen returns to league action this weekend with the hopes of putting that one behind them.

They do boast in the league form of three wins in their last three, and will hope to make it four on the bounce when they entertain visiting Freiburg, who have not lost a game in their last eight outings across all competitions.

Freiburg haven't been as impressive as their unbeaten run suggests, but Julian Schuster will hope his team have enough in them to trouble last season's league runner-up, and pick up their first league win in four.

Leverkusen have won eight and lost two of their last 12 home games against Freiburg, winning each of the last two, while the visitors have lost one of their last 12 away games across all competitive competitions.

Prediction: Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 Freiburg

7. Real Betis vs. Atlético Madrid: Diego Simeone's chance to save face

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

Atlético Madrid fans had reason to think of themselves as one of the real deal this season after blowing Real Madrid away in their meeting a few weeks back, and they scored in all their games before their Champions League trip to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

However, they were taught harsh football lessons by their host, who scored four second-half goals in the span of 14 minutes to cap a dominant display with a 4-0 scoreline, while also halting the visitors' scoring run.

A trip to Betis on Monday night does not get any easier, but it does present Diego Simeone with the chance to save his reputation on the back of a game that saw them concede four non-replied goals in a single half across all competitions since his appointment.

Atlético have not lost a league game since their opening weekend defeat away to Espanyol, but that one loss is the same tally also suffered by their host, who is just a place behind them on the league standings, same points but separated by goal difference.

Last time out in the league, Manuel Pellegrini's charge came from two goals down to salvage a point away to Villarreal thanks to Antony's brace, but could not topple Genk in a goalless draw in the Europa League on Thursday.

Atlético have won nine and lost one of their last 12 meetings, but the host are unbeaten in their last two meetings at home, winning one, and taking into consideration their respective forms, Betis might just continue their unbeaten run at home.

Prediction: Real Betis 2-2 Atlético Madrid

8. Ajax vs. Twente: Johnny Heitinga to justify loyalty

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

After a run of four winless, Johnny Heitinga's status as manager of Ajax is under a lot of scrutiny, and this weekend's visit of FC Twente presents an opportunity to prove doubters wrong and justify the faith management has in him.

But the match is much complicated as Twente have turned around a very underwhelming start to the campaign, and are now placed seventh, just two points behind fourth place Ajax, having won three and drawn one in their last four games.

Ajax, who in that period have lost three and drawn one in four games, are also winless in their last four visits to Enschede to face Twente in the league, have a lot of reasons to be worried ahead of kickoff on Sunday afternoon.

Winless in their last eight away games since April, Heitinga has to find a way, or risk adding more to the pressure from fans, who are demanding the management pull the plug on his contract.

Prediction: FC Twente 2-2 Ajax

9. Royal Antwerp vs. Club Brugge: No cheap route to retribution for a master in misery

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

After their loss at Standard Liege last time out, Royal Antwerp fell into the relegation zone, and there they will remain ahead of their meeting with title-chasing Club Brugge in Deurne on Sunday afternoon.

Winless in their last six games with four defeats, they are just in the perfect form to get bullied by an ambitious Brugge, whose goal is to ensure Union Saint Gilloise's three-point lead is not extended.

The visitors have been busier due to their Champions League engagement, and although they have lost their last two in the competition, their league form has been great with four wins and one draw in their last five, making them the most in-form team in the competition.

Club Brugge have won four of their last six meetings with Royal Antwerp, losing once, and have won their last two visits to the ground of Sunday's opponent.

Prediction: Royal Antwerp 1-3 Club Brugge

10. Hearts vs. Celtic: Down to the champions to try to stop Hearts

Weekend Preview: El Clasico and 10 fixtures to watch

Hearts of Midlothian are not only threatening to win the Scottish Premiership this season, but are also threatening to run away with it very early into the season, having established a five-point lead over second-place Celtic after eight games.

Brendan Rodgers's charge have not started the season convincingly, and Hearts have taken advantage of every slip-up to boost their own chances of winning their first league title since 1960.

What better way would there be to announce their ambitions than by beating second-place and defending champions Celtic, having already dealt with every other member of the current top six?

It is a fixture where Celtic must not only avoid defeat but ensure a winning outcome lest they give their host the opportunity to continue building momentum before they next face up at Celtic Park in December.

Hearts, who have lost their last four meetings with Celtic, will know just how difficult it could be against the Champions, but having already seen them lose to Braga and Dundee FC this month, they will know a win is not impossible.

Prediction: Hearts 2-2 Celtic
