The opening weeks of a European football season often produce unexpected heroes, and the past weekend was no exception. Across England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France, several players delivered performances that went beyond simply contributing to victories.

Some carried their teams through difficult moments; others produced decisive goals against strong opposition. At the same time, a few announced themselves to a wider audience with displays that could define the early stages of their campaigns.

From Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turning a difficult afternoon against Ipswich Town into a personal goal-scoring masterclass to Racing Santander forward Yassir Zabiri making a spectacular LaLiga introduction, the weekend provided plenty of compelling individual performances.

Premier League — Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United

Manchester United needed a response after their opening-weekend defeat to Hull City, and Bruno Fernandes produced almost everything his team required in a 5-2 comeback victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

Ipswich took the lead through Leif Davis in the 29th minute, leaving United facing another uncomfortable afternoon. Still, their captain quickly changed the direction of the contest and finished the game with four goal involvements.

Fernandes equalised in the 40th minute after Matheus Cunha capitalised on a Marcelino Núñez mistake and released the Portuguese midfielder, who finished confidently with his left foot. He then took complete control after the interval.

The Portuguese converted a 61st-minute penalty before completing his hat-trick seven minutes later, finishing from close range to put United 4-1 ahead. Bryan Mbeumo subsequently added a fifth from Bruno's assist, before Ipswich scored a late consolation.

The importance of Fernandes' performance went beyond the three goals. He provided leadership when United were under pressure, dictated attacking movements and repeatedly positioned himself where the decisive moments were developing. 

His hat-trick was only his second in the Premier League and transformed what threatened to be another frustrating United performance into a convincing victory, just a few days after picking up the PFA Player of the Year award.

LaLiga — Yassir Zabiri, Racing Santander

Few players in Europe's major leagues could match Yassir Zabiri's impact over the weekend. The Moroccan striker marked his first start for Racing Santander with a remarkable hat-trick in a 3-2 victory over Elche, scoring all three of his side's goals and almost single-handedly establishing a winning platform before the visitors fought back.

Zabiri needed only 21 minutes to complete his treble. His first two goals arrived in the opening stages before he completed the first-half hat-trick in first-half stoppage time, giving Racing a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Elche eventually scored twice, but Zabiri's early intervention had already placed Santander in a position from which they could secure their first victory of the campaign. He is now joint top scorer in the LaLiga.

Serie A — Antonio Raimondo, Frosinone

Antonio Raimondo was the difference-maker as newly promoted Frosinone produced one of the weekend's biggest results by defeating Fiorentina 3-0 away from home at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The result was already significant because of the quality and expectations surrounding Fiorentina, but Raimondo made it particularly memorable by scoring in either half.

The Italian forward opened the scoring in the 26th minute, giving Frosinone the breakthrough they needed in Florence. Gabriele Bracaglia then doubled the advantage before half-time, leaving Fiorentina with a difficult task.

Our Serie A player of the week, Raimondo, returned in the second half to finish the job, scoring again in the 68th minute with a left-footed effort into the top corner after being assisted by Bracaglia.

His performance was notable for its efficiency. Although Fiorentina enjoyed periods of possession and generated opportunities, Raimondo gave Frosinone the cutting edge their opponents lacked.

Bundesliga — Yuito Suzuki, Freiburg

Yuito Suzuki produced perhaps the most complete attacking performance of the Bundesliga opening weekend, scoring a hat-trick as Freiburg overwhelmed Werder Bremen 4-1 at the Europa-Park Stadion.

The Japanese attacker was involved throughout Freiburg's attacking surge and ensured that the hosts began their Bundesliga campaign emphatically and extended their winning streak against the visitors to five.

Suzuki opened the scoring in the 29th minute, rising to head home from Niklas Beste's delivery. Freiburg then added a second through Igor Matanović shortly before half-time, but Suzuki was far from finished.

The 24-year-old struck again just three minutes after the restart, converting from Derry Scherhant's assist, before completing his hat-trick in the 55th minute after being set up by Matanović.

Three goals in one Bundesliga match would have been enough to secure the spotlight, but Suzuki's influence was also reflected in the way Freiburg controlled the game after taking the lead, and no player in the league during the weekend topped his masterclass.

Ligue 1 — Gessime Yassine, Strasbourg

Gessime Yassine delivered a decisive second-half performance as Strasbourg came from behind to beat Lens 2-1 at the Stade de la Meinau. Lens took the lead through Florian Thauvin's 38th-minute penalty, but Strasbourg's young attacker eventually turned the contest around with two goals after the interval.

Yassine levelled the scores in the 48th minute, restoring Strasbourg's belief after a difficult first half. His biggest moment arrived in the 85th minute when he met Sebastian Nanasi's cross with a right-footed volley to hand Strasbourg all three points.

His contribution was not restricted to his goals, but also his work without the ball and his defensive effort, while his two finishes ultimately provided the margin between the teams, handing his team their first win of the season.

Ultimate Player of the Weekend 

Bruno Fernandes ultimately edges the other contenders, particularly Freiburg’s Yuito Suzuki, to claim the ultimate Player of the Weekend award. Suzuki’s hat-trick in Freiburg’s 4-1 win over Werder Bremen was outstanding, but Fernandes combined the same three-goal haul with an assist in Manchester United’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich.

More importantly, his goals came when United needed them most. An equalizer after Ipswich had taken the lead, then a second-half brace to turn the contest decisively in United’s favour. His assist for Bryan Mbeumo completed a four-goal contribution.
