Preview and Predictions: Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1 Kick Off to Join LaLiga

The wait is over in England, France and Italy as the 2026-27 domestic season moves into full swing this weekend. The Premier League takes centre stage from Friday, with reigning champions Arsenal opening their title defence, while Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all begin new chapters under different managers.
Across the Channel, Ligue 1 also gets underway, with Paris Saint-Germain beginning their latest title defence against Rennes, while Marseille face Strasbourg. Serie A follows with its opening round, and the headline fixture from the selected games sees AC Milan travel to Torino on Sunday.
The Rossoneri are attempting to recover from a disappointing previous campaign under new manager Ruben Amorim, while Torino begin another season hoping to push into the European conversation. The Italian top flight enters a new campaign with Inter Milan as defending champions after their dominant title-winning season.
LaLiga, meanwhile, has already begun, meaning the Spanish fixtures in this selection are from Gameweek 2, rather than the opening weekend. However, Clasico rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to feature for the first time.
Real Betis and Real Sociedad are only making their league debuts after their opening-round fixtures were postponed, while Atlético Madrid have already beaten Málaga 2-0. With four leagues now providing major weekend action, here are the key previews and predictions.
Preview & Predictions: 10 games to watch out for this weekend

Arsenal begin their Premier League title defence at the Emirates against Coventry City, who are back in the top flight for the first time in 25 years after winning the Championship under the guidance of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.
Mikel Arteta's side could hardly have sent a stronger warning before the season, beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield. Arsenal have also strengthened with Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis, although William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are unavailable.
Coventry will be without injured striker Haji Wright, while Jack Rudoni is a doubt. The Gunners will also continue to be without stars like William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, while new signing Bruno Guimarães is also set to miss out.
The historical advantage is heavily in Arsenal's: the Gunners have won 43 of 76 meetings, while Coventry have managed 14 victories. Arsenal are also unbeaten in their last 45 home league games against promoted opposition.
Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City
Brighton vs. Aston Villa
Brighton open what is expected to be an ambitious campaign by hosting Aston Villa at the Amex. The Seagulls enter the contest with encouraging pre-season results, including wins over Roma and Bologna, while Villa's preparations have been complicated by injuries and squad changes.
Unai Emery's side also lost the UEFA Super Cup to PSG earlier this month. Villa did, however, finish last season strongly and beat Manchester City away from home on the final day.
Brighton have home advantage and appear the more settled side, but Villa possess enough attacking quality to make this uncomfortable. However, Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last four meetings, winning the last three.
The visitors' European ambitions mean this should be competitive, although Brighton's preparation gives them a slight edge.
Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Aston Villa
Manchester City vs Bournemouth

Manchester City begin life under Enzo Maresca with Bournemouth visiting the Etihad. It is a particularly significant opening because City are entering their first season without Pep Guardiola in a decade, while Rodri and Bernardo Silva have also departed after a major summer overhaul.
The Community Shield defeat to Arsenal was hardly the ideal start, but City's record against Bournemouth remains overwhelmingly dominant. City have won 18 of their previous 20 meetings with the Cherries, with one draw and one Bournemouth victory, scoring 57 goals in the process.
Bournemouth arrive with confidence after a positive pre-season under new manager Marco Rose, but the Etihad remains a daunting destination. Their long list of injured players, like Eli Junior Kroupi and Tyler Adams, will also affect their strength.
Enzo Maresca's side should have too much control and attacking quality, with Erling Haaland's opening weekend record a particular highlight, while Ryan Christie is another absentee for The Cherries due to a suspension from last season.
Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Bournemouth
Newcastle United vs Liverpool
Few opening-weekend fixtures carry as much intrigue as Newcastle against Liverpool. Both clubs have new managers, with Matthias Jaissle taking charge at Newcastle and Andoni Iraola beginning his Liverpool tenure.
Liverpool have also undergone a dramatic rebuild following the departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, while Newcastle have lost major figures including Bruno Guimarães, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.
Alexander Isak adds another layer after moving from Newcastle to Liverpool for £125m and now returning to St James' Park for the first time, as he was still with the Magpies when The Reds visited last season, while injury kept him out of the return leg at Anfield.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 19 Premier League meetings with Newcastle and won both league meetings last season, including a 4-1 victory at Anfield. Newcastle's home advantage could narrow the gap, but Liverpool's recent dominance makes them favourites.
Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool
Fulham vs Chelsea
Chelsea's new era under Xabi Alonso begins with a west London derby against Fulham, managed by Alonso's former Real Madrid and Spanish national team colleague Álvaro Arbeloa.
Chelsea are coming off a disappointing 10th-place finish but have invested heavily, including the £117m signing of Morgan Rogers, with Maxence Lacroix, Valentin Barco, Marco Palestra and Pep Chavarria also joining in significant deals.
One major subplot concerns Enzo Fernández, with Alonso refusing to confirm the midfielder's long-term future amid reported interest from Manchester City, but the Argentine remains with the club ahead of the trip to Craven Cottage.
Fulham, meanwhile, will be hoping Arbeloa can immediately impose his ideas following his arrival as the successor to Marco Silva, who left to join Benfica earlier in the summer.
History heavily favours Chelsea, although this has been a more even affair recently, with both sides winning twice in the last four meetings. The derby factor should make it closer than the records suggest, but Chelsea may just start with three points.
Prediction: Fulham 1-2 Chelsea
Real Betis vs Real Sociedad
This is technically both clubs' opening league fixture because their Gameweek 1 matches were postponed, making this one of the weekend's unusual LaLiga encounters.
Real Betis finished fifth last season and qualified for the Champions League, while Sociedad ended 10th. Manuel Pellegrini's team also had a productive pre-season, beating Lyon, Almería and Arsenal before losing narrowly to Inter Milan.
Real Sociedad, meanwhile, head into the campaign with defensive concerns after conceding 13 goals across seven friendlies. They'll also have to do without the trio of Goncalo Guedes, Alvaro Odriozola, Paolo Marin, and Jon Gorrotxategi.
The previous league meeting ended 2-2 in May, while the overall LaLiga head-to-head favours Sociedad with 40 wins to Betis' 35, alongside 29 draws. However, Betis' greater continuity and home advantage make them the stronger selection.
Prediction: Real Betis 2-1 Real Sociedad
Atlético Madrid vs Villarreal

Atlético Madrid will be eager to add to their impressive start when they take on Villarreal in LaLiga this weekend after already securing three points thanks to their 2-0 victory over Malaga in their opening match.
Diego Simeone's side looked short of their best offensively, however, with Julián Álvarez's uncertain situation continuing to dominate attention. Antoine Griezmann has also left for MLS, while Alexander Sørloth is injured, leaving Simeone to consider Ademola Lookman as a central option.
New arrival Lee Kang-in alongside Álex Baena come off the bench to score the goals against Málaga, offering encouragement to a team that looked out of its depth until the latter stages of the match against the newcomers.
Villarreal represent a significantly tougher test and have enough quality to exploit Atlético's attacking uncertainty, but the Madrid side's defensive organisation and home advantage remain major factors.
The Yellow Submarines had to come from 2-0 down to earn a point away at newly promoted Racing Santander in the opening weekend, but while they are winless in their last three visits to the Riyad Air Metropolitano, they defeated Atleti 5-1 in their most recent meeting in May.
Expect a tight contest, but we'll still expect Atlético Madrid to edge it due to their form and home advantage.
Prediction: Atlético Madrid 2-1 Villarreal
Marseille vs Strasbourg
Ligue 1 begins at the Stade Vélodrome, where Marseille welcome Strasbourg. Bruno Génésio is demanding a proactive approach from Marseille as his side start a campaign in which they will be expected to challenge near the top of the French table.
Strasbourg, meanwhile, arrive as an ambitious opponent capable of making the contest uncomfortable. Hugo Oliveira will also be keen to make a good impression after a poor pre-season run that ended with no wins and four losses in five.
Marseille's home support should be an important advantage, particularly on opening night, while their greater attacking resources give them the edge.
The fixture also provides an early test of whether Marseille can turn their summer preparation into a strong league start. While Strasbourg should also have opportunities, Marseille are the more likely side to control the game.
Prediction: Marseille 2-1 Strasbourg
Rennes vs PSG

PSG's title defenceee begins in extraordinary circumstances. The champions were originally scheduled to host Rennes at the Parc des Princes, but damage to the pitch caused by the extreme summer heat made the stadium unsafe, forcing the fixture to be moved to Rennes' Roazhon Park.
That effectively gives Rennes home advantage in a match in which PSG would normally expect to control the surroundings. Yet the champions remain the overwhelming force in French football and enter the campaign as favourites to retain their title, while Luis Enrique's team will want to start strongly after another demanding European campaign.
Rennes can make use of the unusual venue arrangement as they've also won four of their last seven home meetings with Les Parisiens, but PSG's quality should ultimately prevail barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Prediction: Rennes 1-2 PSG
Torino vs AC Milan
Serie A's opening weekend brings a demanding assignment for AC Milan, who travel to Torino for their first league match under their new Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim.
Milan are looking to rebuild after a disappointing previous season and have made Gonçalo Ramos one of their major attacking investments, with the Portuguese striker arriving for €74m from European champions PSG.
Torino, meanwhile, belong among the clubs hoping to make a push towards the European places after finishing 12th in their 14th consecutive season in the topflight. While Milan's challenge will be blending Amorim's ideas with a squad still changing, the hosts can make the most of home advantage.

The pre-season wasn't convincing, but rounding it off with a sensational 4-2 comeback win over Manchester United is a source of optimism for the Rossoneri, who also have greater individual quality, although opening-day uncertainty makes this less straightforward than the name recognition suggests. A narrow Milan victory is the call.
Prediction: Torino 1-2 AC Milan
The weekend's overall picture
The Premier League provides the deepest collection of headline fixtures, with Arsenal beginning their title defence and Liverpool and Manchester City starting new managerial eras. Ligue 1 also brings an immediate talking point as PSG's opener is moved from Paris to Rennes, while Serie A begins with Milan's trip to Torino.
In Spain, meanwhile, the focus is firmly on Gameweek 2, with Betis and Real Sociedad finally entering the competition and Atlético attempting to build on their opening victory in a high-stakes clash with Villarreal.
The predictions point towards strong starts for the major favourites, but the opening weekend traditionally has a habit of producing surprises.
