The final weekend of August brings a packed schedule across Europe’s major leagues, with several heavyweight fixtures offering an early test of title ambitions. 

The Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1 reach Round 2, while LaLiga moves into Round 3. Germany’s Bundesliga, meanwhile, gets underway, immediately serving up Bayern Munich against Stuttgart among its headline fixtures.

With league campaigns still in their infancy, recent form, summer recruitment, squad depth and fitness could prove more decisive than league position. Here is a match-by-match look at 10 of the weekend’s biggest fixtures.

English Premier League 

Tottenham will be looking for a response after beginning the season with a damaging 3-0 defeat at Brentford, while Newcastle arrive after a spirited 2-2 draw with Liverpool, although both teams stormed to victory in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Spurs have nevertheless shown encouraging attacking signs during pre-season, including a 3-0 win over Hoffenheim and a 2-1 victory against Chelsea, while Savio's impressive debut against Charlton also added to recent positives.

Unfortunately for Newcastle United, their recent competitive results have been less convincing, but their performance against Liverpool and comeback win against West Brom showed their ability to compete against strong opposition and against adversity.

Tottenham have also suffered a major fitness blow with James Maddison sustaining a shoulder fracture, while several other players remain unavailable. Newcastle United are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with their host.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-2 Newcastle.

Chelsea vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Chelsea head into this fixture with confidence after recovering from their unconvincing pre-season by beating Fulham 3-2 in their league opener and following it up with a 2-0 Carabao Cup Round 2 win over Luton Town. 

Their recent run also includes victories over Real Sociedad and AC Milan, although defensive consistency remains a concern with Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra both missing their opening two games.

Brighton, meanwhile, could hardly have asked for a better competitive start after destroying both Aston Villa and Tromso by the same scoreline of 4-0 in the Premier League and Conference League qualification respectively.

Chelsea could be without Wesley Fofana through suspension, while Cole Palmer is a fitness doubt. Brighton have their own concerns, with Kaoru Mitoma, Stefanos Tzimas, and Yankuba Minteh among those carrying injury concerns.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-2 Brighton.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal

This is arguably the weekend’s biggest Premier League fixture, but it could be an easy run for Premier League champions Arsenal due to the recent events, especially player movement at Villa Park. 

The Europa League winners suffered a nightmare opening-day defeat, losing 4-0 to Brighton after João Gomes was sent off, and Unai Emery’s side have now lost their last four competitive matches.

Arsenal arrive in considerably better shape after opening their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Coventry and beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield. The Gunners have also won four of their last five matches, giving them a clear momentum advantage.

Mikel Arteta's side have historically held the upper hand in this fixture, with 18 wins to Villa’s eight in the recent head-to-head record, although Unai Emery's side won the previous meeting at Villa Park.

Both sides have injury problems, with William Saliba and Jurrien Timber among Arsenal’s absentees while Bruno Guimaraes will undergo a late fitness test. Aston Villa are without the suspended Gomes and several injured players.

Prediction: Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal

Spanish LaLiga 

Sevilla have made a strong start and enter this contest after beating Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club, although their recent run also includes a pre-season defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, while Atlético’s level of threat remains significantly higher. 

Atlético, meanwhile, after winning their opening game, drew 2-2 with Villarreal in their last league fixture and have experienced a mixed pre-season, beating Marseille but losing to Manchester City and Manchester United. 

Sevilla’s home advantage should make this difficult, especially having won four of their last six against Saturday's visitors, but Diego Simeone’s side possess greater depth and experience to nullify the threats.

Atlético will be without suspended defender Robin Le Normand, while Alexander Sørloth is injured and Julián Álvarez is doubtful. Sevilla appear to have fewer major concerns.

Prediction: Sevilla 1-1 Atlético Madrid.

Barcelona vs Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona head into their third league fixture with confidence after opening the season strongly with victories over Elche and Athletic Club. Raphinha and Fermin López have so far been decisive, both scoring in the two games so far.

Rayo have endured a much less convincing run, drawing with Alavés and losing to Sevilla, although they did beat Sporting Charleroi in pre-season, their only positive result since the end of last season. 

Barcelona’s attacking quality should provide the decisive advantage, particularly at Camp Nou. They have so far scored seven goals in two games, while injuries to Gavi and Frenkie de Jong are expected to have no impact.

Rayo also have fitness concerns involving Isi Palazón, Marash Kumbulla and Luiz Felipe, which will be decisive for a team that has conceded the fewest goals against Barcelona among all the teams that have remained in the Spanish topflight since 2018.

Prediction: Barcelona 3-0 Rayo Vallecano.

Italian Serie A

Napoli have started the new Serie A campaign with an encouraging 2-0 victory away to Genoa thanks to substitutes Kevin De Bruyne and Antonio Vergara, and now they return home with the opportunity to maintain that momentum. 

Massimiliano Allegri’s team also enjoyed a productive pre-season, including a 6-2 win over Aris Thessaloniki, while their opponent, Como, by contrast, opened with a 1-1 draw against Udinese, with Tasos Douvikas scoring their equaliser.

The visitors have nevertheless shown they can trouble bigger sides, drawing with Arsenal during pre-season and earning another draw against Liverpool, while their remarkable performance last season earned UEFA Champions League qualification.

The historical Serie A head-to-head is surprisingly close, with both teams holding one and three draws across all competitions since Como's promotion back to the top flight in 2024, with all the draws coming in their most recent meetings. 

Napoli have several absentees, including Alessandro Buongiorno, Luca Marianucci and Pasquale Mazzocchi, while Como are missing Jayden Addai.

Prediction: Napoli 2-1 Como.

German Bundesliga 

The Bundesliga begins with an immediate heavyweight encounter as champions Bayern Munich kick off their title defence by welcoming Stuttgart to the Allianz Arena.

The Bavarians' recent form has been outstanding, including a German Super Cup win over Borussia Dortmund and pre-season wins against Heidenheim and RB Leipzig, while Stuttgart have also produced encouraging results, beating Everton and Hansa Rostock during their recent preparation.

The gulf in historical strength is considerable: Bayern have won 29 of the recorded meetings compared with just two Stuttgart victories, with two draws. 

Bayern also have home advantage and greater attacking firepower, making them clear favourites to begin the campaign with three points. Stuttgart's sizeable injury list, including Chris Führich, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Lorenz Assignon, could also affect their resistance.

Harry Kane has an impeccable form against Stuttgart, with eight goals in 14 games, his most against any German team, while Jonathan Tah is unbeaten in 14 against the visitors.

Prediction: Bayern Munich 5-1 Stuttgart.

Union Berlin vs Eintracht Frankfurt

The opening weekend also brings an intriguing contest in Berlin between two sides with contrasting strengths. Union finished 11th last season with 39 points, while Frankfurt ended eighth with 44, scoring 61 goals compared with Union’s 44. 

Frankfurt therefore possess the stronger attacking numbers, but Union’s home environment at the Alte Försterei can make them difficult to break down, especially with more than half of their points from last season coming in home fixtures.

Recent meetings have favoured Union, who are unbeaten in their last five meetings, including a 1-1 draw and a 4-3 away win last season, while the broader head-to-head record gives Frankfurt the advantage, and the host's poor pre-season form further strengthens the visitors' chances.

Prediction: Union Berlin 1-2 Eintracht Frankfurt.

French Ligue 1

Lille vs. Paris Saint-Germain 

PSG face one of their more demanding early tests against Lille as they attempt to build momentum in the opening weeks of the Ligue 1 campaign after fighting back to salvage a point in their opening game against Rennes.

The champions possess the deepest squad and remain the benchmark in France, but Lille have regularly proved capable of making this fixture uncomfortable, especially at the Decathlon Area - Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Lille’s organisation, athleticism and ability to attack quickly could test PSG’s defensive structure. PSG’s superior individual quality should nevertheless give them control of possession and territory for long periods. 

Having dropped points in their opening game, Luis Enrique and his team will be desperate for the three points, but if there's a team that can stop them in Ligue 1, Lille is not far away from that.

Prediction: Lille 1-3 PSG

AS Monaco vs Olympique Marseille 

Monaco and Marseille meet in another high-profile French fixture, with both clubs possessing ambitions beyond simply challenging for European qualification. 

Monaco’s recent form has been encouraging, including victories over Liverpool, Getafe, Le Havre, and Gornik Zabrze, while Marseille have also impressed, opening their recent run with a 4-0 win over Strasbourg in their Ligue 1 opener to move to the summit. 

Marseille’s defeat to Atlético Madrid provides a reminder of the quality they face at this level, but their attacking options give them a genuine chance in Monaco, against a team with two clean sheets in 10 competitive games.

The hosts will rely on home advantage and the creativity of players such as Aleksandr Golovin, while Marseille can threaten through their pace and movement in attack. With both sides capable of producing goals, a tight contest looks likely.  

Prediction: Monaco 2-2 Marseille.

Weekend verdict

The weekend offers several early indicators of where Europe’s biggest clubs stand. Arsenal appear to have the momentum to overcome an injury-hit Aston Villa, Bayern, at home, should begin the Bundesliga with a victory, while Napoli and Barcelona are strong favourites at home.

Chelsea face a more dangerous test against a Brighton side coming off a four-goal opening-day victory, and the Tottenham Hotspur-Newcastle United clash could be among the most unpredictable Premier League encounters. 

PSG remain the side to beat in France, although Monaco-Marseille has the potential to produce the most open game of the two Ligue 1 clashes. 

As the season settles into rhythm, these fixtures could provide the first meaningful clues about which teams are genuine contenders and which still have work to do.
