Liverpool and Barcelona left with a mountain to climb by PSG and Atléti

For the first time in two decades, Atlético Madrid beat Barcelona Camp Nou to establish a handsome first-leg advantage in their Champions League quarter-final tie, while a dominant PSG leaves Liverpool on the brink.

If the first-leg results are anything to go by, it appears Barcelona's wait for Champions League glory will continue this year following the shock home loss to Atlético. At the same time, PSG is set to eliminate an English opponent in a fifth straight knockout tie.

After an eventful Tuesday night in Europe's premier club competition, Wednesday did not fail to impress as four heavyweights lock horns in two separate ties, producing one shocking result and another dominant display.

From Barcelona's first home loss since their return to Camp Nou to Liverpool's continued nightmare in Paris, here is a report and highlights of the events that happened in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

10-man Barcelona hands Atleti first Camp Nou win in two decades

After their controversial 2-1 win at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday, many would have tipped Barcelona to dominate Atlético Madrid in both legs of their Champions League quarter-final clash, but the opposite is more likely to happen.

Despite their early dominance, Hansi Flick's team's chances of reaching the semi-finals in back-to-back seasons took a huge hit just before halftime, when young defender Pau Cubarsi was sent off for a last-man goal-denying foul on Giuliano Simeone.

The red card made the 18-year-old the first teenager to be sent off in the Champions League knockout stage in back-to-back seasons, after his sending off against Benfica in the round of 16 away to Benfica last season.

The visitors quickly took advantage of the situation, and Julian Alvarez stepped up to bury the resulting free-kick into the top right corner, beating Joan Garcia and leaving Barcelona still in search of their first Champions League clean sheet in 14 games.

Despite being a man down, it was Barcelona who continued to dominate and create dangers, but Alexander Sorloth scored 10 minutes after coming off the bench to seal a 2-0 win for Atletico, who didn't even create a big chance.

It is a healthy advantage to take back home for the return leg in the Wanda Metropolitano for Diego Simeone's team, who have already eliminated Barcelona from the Copa del Rey this season, but they'll be aware of their opponent's knack for comebacks.

Meanwhile, Los Colchoneros have also eliminated Barcelona in both previous Champions League knockout ties, winning all of the return leg fixtures at home without even conceding a goal.

It is a mountain to climb for Hansi Flick and his boys, especially in the absence of Raphinha, while Pau Cubarsi will also now miss the second leg, but those in Barcelona believe nothing is impossible.

PSG just too good for Liverpool in Paris

In the other game of Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain will continue to rue missed chances even after blowing Liverpool away by two goals to nothing in a dominant first-leg display in Paris.

Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in either half to seal what was a convincing win, but the former and Ousmane Dembele were guilty of failing to bury a lot of clear-cut chances as PSG scored just one from four created.

Liverpool failed to register a shot on target on the night, their first time in the Champions League in six years, although Arne Slot believes that a different game will ensue in Anfield when the defending champions visit for the return leg.

Luis Enrique's team has already eliminated all four English oppositions in knockout ties since the start of last season, and Liverpool could be set to appear on the list for the second season, with Aston Villa, Arsenal, and Chelsea, completing the list.

Liverpool will now have to stage a comeback to stand a chance of reaching the semi-finals against the same team that ended their journey in the round of 16 last season, despite winning the first leg in Paris.

Beating PSG, it is one of the most difficult tasks in world football today, and for the current Liverpool team to do so by a difference of three goals may be far-fetched, but nothing is impossible, especially at Anfield.

Advantage Bayern Munich, Arsenal, PSG, and Atlético Madrid, although progression into the semi-final is not expected to be straightforward, and it wouldn't be if these teams do get it over the line.

Barcelona are considered favorites against their Spanish opponent but the narrative has changed ahead of the second leg, but for the neutrals, it is refreshing to know none of the ties are beyond sight, even though it appears Liverpool has no way back into the tie.

Real Madrid will be without Aurélien Tchouameni in Munich but Jude Bellingham should be ready to start, while captain Kasper Hjulmand will be back from suspension and make Sporting CP's trip to face Arsenal in London.

Liverpool may call on Mohamed Salah next week while Alexander Isak may also be considered if he impresses in the visit of Fulham on Saturday, but they'll remain without Alisson Becker, who will not be back until the final weeks of the season.

PSG could welcome Bradley Barcola and Fabian Ruiz from injury for the return leg, but for Barcelona against Atlético, Marc Bernal could be back, but their Remontada attempt will be without Raphinha and Cubarsi.
