Top performers of the weekend in Europe top five leagues

  Hassan Afolabi October 25, 2024

In the top five European leagues, the last weekend showcased standout performances that captured fans' attention upon return from the International break. We take a look at those before kickoff of another round later today.

English Premier League : Curtis Jones of Liverpool

The English midfielder stepped up in the biggest Premier League fixture of the weekend and was responsible for the decisive moments for Arne Slot's side as they earn their most important victory so far.

Liverpool maintains their top status in the league after seeing off Chelsea in a 2-1 win in Anfield thanks to Curtis Jones, who won the penalty for the opening goal and scored a second-half winner to condemn the visitors to only their second league defeat of the league season.

Jones' performance also highlighted his defensive contributions, as he worked tirelessly to close down Chelsea's passing lanes. The 23-year-old won six duels and made six possession recoveries in a midfield of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

His balance of attacking creativity and defensive discipline justify his surprise selection by Arne Slot. On a weekend where most the big names failed to deliver, Curtis Jones shines bright for Liverpool, and is our Premier League player of the weekend.

La Liga : Alex Berenguer of Athletic Club

Spanish attacker Alex Berenguer had arguably the best performance of his career in Athletic Club's big win during the weekend against Espanyol, who had only conceded goal times in a game once in the last 17 months, against Real Madrid last month.

It was all Athletic Club and they got off to a perfect start as defender Daniel Vivian fired home from a Nico Williams corner to open the scoring in the sixth minute.

Alex Berenguer then assisted each of Inaki Williams' goals in the span of two minutes just before the half-hour mark and the host took a 3-0 lead. Berenguer now has four assists in La Liga this season, more than three in the entirety of last season.

The 29-year-old then got on the scoresheet for his first goal of the season five minutes before the hour mark. He fired a leftfooted shot into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance following a pass from Oscar de Marcos.

He was withdrawn due to injury with 12 minutes left to play and the visitors went on to grab a consolation through substitute Alvaro Tejero as it finished 4-1 in San Mames.

Serie A : Andrea Colpani of Fiorentina

The most productive player of the weekend in top five leagues, Andrea Colpani was unplayable as flawless Fiorentina went onslaught against Lecce to secure a 6-0 away win.

The host did not make it easy for themselves as they went down to 10-men after Antonino Gallo was sent off two minutes before the interval, whilst they were already 2-0 down courtesy of goals from Danilo Cataldi and Andrea Colpani.

Cataldi scored his second from the resulting free-kick to make it 3-0 before the half-time break, and it was all Colpani after the interval as the Italian winger scored six minutes before the hour mark to make it 4-0.

After Lucas Beltran scored to make it 5-0, Colpani assisted Fabio Parisi for the sixth and final goal of the game to take his goal involvements in the match to three.

It was a performance to relish for the 25-year-old, who also created five chances and made seven recoveries.

Bundesliga : Harry Kane of Bayern Munich

The atmosphere was tense in the Allianz Arena after a goalless first-half against visiting Stuttgart, who won Bayern Munich 3-1 in their previous meeting.

However, Harry Kane reassured the Bavarians that those days are distance from memories as he scored a second-half hat-trick to help Vincent Kompany's side return to winning ways after a barren run in three before the international break.

The England captain opened the scoring three minutes before the hour mark, firing a low and firm shot from 25 yards out, managing to beat the goalkeeper. Joshua Kimmich got the assist for his pass but it was all down the Kane's quality.

The lead was doubled three minutes later after an awkward moment for the Stuttgart defence, one where they failed to deal with a ball in. Kane took advantage of the situation and scored his and Bayern's second of the match.

He completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes left on the clock. Joao Palhinha's cross was deflected into his path, and the former Spurs striker said thank you very much by taping home from close range.

Coman came off the bench to grab a fourth but Saturday evening is fondly remembered for Harry Kane's masterclass. And on a weekend where a lot of players shone in the German first division, Kane topples them all, and is also the best player of the weekend in Europe at large.

Ligue 1 : Bradley Barcola of PSG Paris Saint-German

Barcola continues to star as the main man for Les Parisiens following the departure of Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembele played himself out of favour of coach Luis Enrique.

The 22-year-old winger was at it again on Saturday night to help the defending champions conquer giants slayers Strasbourg, who has already picked points against the likes of Olympic Marseille, Lille and Lens so far.

He got the party started in the 18th minute, when he set up youngster Senny Mayulu for the opening goal. Mayulu, who was making his first start of the season scored what was his first-ever Ligue 1 goal, but big credits to Barcola for a great wing play.

Barcola got himself on the scoresheet to make it 3-1, a minute after his penalty won was overturned by the VAR. It was a brilliant goal as well, a trademark Barcola goal. The French winger controlled a long pass from defender Pacho, steadied himself before finding the top corner.

He was withdrawn with the game already won, although both teams did score one each after his departure from the pitch, but his impact on the match was decisive, and he did take his goal contributions in the league this season to eight.

Responsible betting is not about fear. It is about structure. A bettor who manages bankroll, stake size, bet history, and emotional timing gets more value from sports markets than someone chasing one dramatic slip. MelBet’s official materials frame gambling as entertainment and point users toward responsible gaming policies, account rules, KYC procedures, deposit controls, and self-exclusion options.A bankroll is a fixed amount set aside for betting. It should never include rent, bills, debt payments, food money, school fees, emergency savings, or business cash. That boundary sounds basic, but most betting problems begin when users treat the account balance as flexible spending rather than a closed betting wallet.
