Steven Gerrard’s tenure as Aston Villa manager, albeit was a rollercoaster ride filled with both promises and disappointments, there were moments during his reign he did made the club feel the good days are at hand.

Appointed in November 2021 as the successor Dean Smith, who was relieved of his duties following an underwhelming start to the season, the Liverpool legend arrived at Villa Park with high expectations following a successful spell at Rangers.

With the Glasgow giants, Gerrard guided the club to an unbeaten league title. Villa fans hoped his leadership and tactical nous would elevate the team’s performances in the Premier League.

Ultimately, the former England captain lasted just 11 months on the job before he was relieved of his role and replaced by Unai Emery, he did achieve some sensational feats/ results with the Birmingham based club.

5. Impressive win on debut

Aston Villa were on a run of five consecutive Premier League defeats in the build up to Dean Smith's sacking, their longest run of such since eleven consecutive between February and April 2016.

However, upon his arrival, Steven Gerrard led the team to a 2-0 home win over Brighton, thanks to late goals from Ollie Watkins ans Tyrone Mings.

The win lifted mood in the Villa Park and improved the atmosphere, assuring the fans that his expertise would see them through the difficult period.

4. Signed Philippe Coutinho

Who would have thought that a player like the Brazilian, who had represented Inter, Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich will agree a move to Aston Villa before clocking 30 ?

Steven Gerrard was able to convince his former teammate to move to the Villa Park in the winter window of 2022 and he even scored on his debut in a 2-2 comeback home draw with Manchester United.

Coutinho had a successful loan spell and returned in the summer on a permanent move, which did not really go well.

3. Stood up to an onslaught Manchester City 

In September 2022, Steven Gerrard’s Villa secured a draw against a rich in form Manchester City, becoming the first team to prevent Pep Guardiola’s side to score more than once across all competitions at that stage of the season.

Prior to that Premier League meeting which came in the Villa Park, the defending champions had scored multiple times in each of their first six games into the season, while they even put six past Nottingham Forest in their most recent game before the trip to Villa.

After a barren first half, Erling Haaland gave City the lead five minutes after the restart but Leon Bailey respond for the host later in the half as the spoil was shared in Birmingham.

2. Sensational comeback against Manchester United 

In January 2022, Steven Gerrard led Villa to a dramatic comeback from two goals down to earn a draw against Manchester United, a result that saw them end a run of three consecutive home losses in the fixture.

The visitors took a 2-0 lead through a Bruno Fernandes' brace but in the final quarter of the game, the host hit back with goals from youngster Jacob Ramsey and debutant Philippe Coutinho as it finished 2-2.

1. Biggest win and best run

In March 2022, Aston Villa put four non replied goals past Southampton in a Premier League fixture in the Villa Park, the club's biggest win under Steven Gerrard.

The win also came between a 2-0 win over Brighton and a 3-0 win over Leeds United, making a run of three consecutive victories, the longest of such run under the former Liverpool midfielder.

These were the best moments of Aston Villa under Steven Gerrard before he was sacked in October 2022 following a 3-0 loss at Fulham.
