Top 4 Highlights to Watch out For In the Premier League This Weekend

  Hassan Afolabi May 2, 2025

With a new champion already crowned and all relegation spots confirmed, one might expect Gameweek 35 of the Premier League to offer little excitement. However, the opposite is true, there’s still plenty on the line and even more to look forward to.

With pride, positioning, and continental dreams still in play, highlighted by Liverpool's guard of honor and the battle for UEFA Champions League qualifications, here are four key things to watch out for in the English top flight this weekend.

1. Liverpool's Guard of Honor Begins

Liverpool will begin receiving their guard of honour with a visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday. While the Reds have little left to play for beyond pride and legacy, they are still expected to put in a strong performance.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are fighting for crucial points as they aim to secure a top-five finish and qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The race for a Champions League berth looks set to go down to the wire, and Chelsea can expect no favours from Sunday’s visitors. While Liverpool have no stakes in the standings, they remain active in no other competition, leaving Arne Slot with little justification to rotate heavily.

Compounding matters for the hosts, Mohamed Salah remains locked in a tense battle for the European Golden Shoe. The Egyptian was leapfrogged last weekend by Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, adding personal motivation to an already intense matchup.

With the Egyptian enduring a lean spell in front of goal, Chelsea would be wise to tread carefully in and around the box. No side has been awarded more penalties than Liverpool (9) this season, and with Mohamed Salah keen to return to the scoresheet, any rash challenge could prove costly come Sunday.

2. The Race for UEFA Champions League qualification intensifies

Manchester City lead the way as the race for UEFA Champions League qualification intensifies, with teams placed third to seventh battling for just three remaining spots. They kick off the weekend action on Friday night.

The Cityzens face a stern test at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Europe’s most in-form side over the last six gameweeks. Under Vítor Pereira, appointed just before the turn of the year, Wolves have undergone a remarkable resurgence.

Aston Villa will look to bounce back from their Emirates FA Cup semi-final disappointment when they host Fulham at Villa Park, in a fixture they’ve won in each of the last five meetings. A victory in Saturday’s early kickoff would see them temporarily move level on points with the teams in fifth and sixth place.

Newcastle United also face a tough challenge away to Brighton on Sunday, before Chelsea take on Liverpool, and Nottingham Forest wrap up the gameweek with a Monday night visit to Selhurst Park.

3. Arsenal's Run-In FateTo Be Defined

Arsenal may appear comfortably clear of the UEFA Champions League qualification battle for now, but that could change this weekend if the chasing pack win and the Gunners slip up again.

Mikel Arteta’s side host Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, holding a seven-point advantage over sixth-placed Nottingham Forest. If that gap is cut to four with three games remaining, their position would be far from secure.

With a challenging trip to Anfield still to come, Arsenal’s focus could shift even further toward Europe—especially if they overturn their one-goal deficit against PSG and book a place in the UEFA Champions League final. That would make player fitness a top priority ahead of the showpiece in Munich.

While a win over Bournemouth remains important, Mikel Arteta may opt to rest key players ahead of Wednesday’s decisive clash in Paris—presenting a golden opportunity for the Cherries to complete a league double over their hosts, and potentially dragging them into the UCL qualification race.

4. Southampton and Leicester City at One Another's Mercy

Southampton have so far earned just 11 points—matching the unwanted record for the fewest in a single Premier League season, set by Derby County in 2007–08.

With four games remaining, their immediate goal is to pick up at least one more point and avoid going down in history for all the wrong reasons. An upcoming trip to Leicester City presents their best chance yet to do just that.

Leicester City have just set—and extended—their own unwanted record for the most consecutive home defeats without scoring in Premier League history, with the loss to Liverpool marking their ninth straight blank at the King Power Stadium.

The last time they found the net at home in the league was back in December, when goals from Jamie Vardy and Bobby De Cordova-Reid earned a comeback draw against Brighton.

Leicester City have won each of the last three meetings in this fixture, scoring at least three goals in each. However, based on current form, it is the visitors who appear more likely to come out on top this time.

That said, both sides could leave the King Power with something to smile about—if Southampton secure the point they need, and Leicester finally end their home goal drought.
