The PL Recap: Arsenal and Villa stayed focused on a slippery weekend

Arsenal and Aston Villa secured wins as the Premier League top-of-the-table battles continue to be tense, with Manchester City failing to beat Chelsea in the Etihad, despite the visitors having a debutant as interim coach.
In another surprise turn of events, Wolves secured the first win of the Premier League season by humbling West Ham United, while the middle of the table has a new look, after the mixed results of the weekend, which left Newcastle and Brentford all smiles.
From Aston Villa's response to a fumbling Manchester City, here are the highlights of all 10 Premier League games of week 20.
Arsenal and Villa stay focused in title race
1. Managerless Chelsea punished a wasteful City

Enzo Fernandez scored a late equalizer at the Etihad on Sunday to dent Manchester City's title hopes as Pep Guardiola's team lost more ground on an unstoppable Arsenal, who they now trail by six points.
Chelsea, who parted company with their former boss Enzo Maresca during the week, again proved that they perform best when the odds are stacked, and stand-in coach Calum McFarland didn't do badly on his first senior assignment.
City were dominant and took a deserved lead through Tijjani Reijnders just before the interval, but Chelsea continued to stay in the game, refusing to let their host run away with it.
Thanks to their second-half substitutes, they made it a worthy contest, and grabbed a deserved equalizer in the closing moments through their Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez, as City made it back-to-back draws.
Leeds United are now unbeaten in seven games, and move eight points above the drop zone, while Manchester United stays sixth, with a lot of teams closing on them.
2. Arsenal survive Bournemouth chaos

Declan Rice marked his return from injury with a brilliant brace to help Arsenal secure a comeback win in the Premier League, and further stretch their lead at the summit after watching their closest rival drop points.
Mikel Arteta's side were looking to make up for their failure in this fixture last season, when they lost both meetings, with the Cherries being the only side to complete the league double over them. However, they suffered an early setback when Gabriel's poor pass allowed Evanilson to give the hosts a 10th-minute lead.
However, the Brazilian restored parity five minutes later, while Declan Rice followed with a second-half brace before substitute Eli Junior Kroupi scored to set up a nervy finale, but the league leaders held on for the points.
3. Trademark United draw at unbeatable Leeds

Manchester United survived defeat at Elland Road as Leeds United had to settle for a point against their host, who now have just one win in five and continue to blow their chance to move into the top four.
Daniel Farke and his team headed into the fixture on a positive run, which had seen them remain unbeaten in six games - their best run in the top flight in over five years - and they were able to extend the run to seven.
They took a second-half lead through American winger Brenden Aaronson, who beat Ayden Heaven in a race to slot home his first Premier League goal in over 50 games, but the lead lasted just three minutes before United responded through Matheus Cunha.
4. Aston Villa bounce back in Forest win

Aston Villa provided the needed response to their defeat at the Emirates in mid-week by beating Nottingham Forest with a convincing display in the curtain raiser for the Premier League weekend.
Ollie Watkins got them underway with a late first-half goal, while John McGinn scored a beautiful brace between a Morgan Gibbs-White's goal for the visitors as Villa extended their winning home run to eleven.
Unai Emery's charge is now level on points with second-place Manchester City, after the Cityzens failed to see out a one-goal lead over Chelsea.
The win also takes them to 25 points at home after 10 games, a return only second to Arsenal, 28, while level with Manchester City, who dropped points at home for only the second time this season in the Chelsea draw.
5. Reed crashed Liverpool's comeback party

Harrison Reed scored an absolute cracker to deny Liverpool what looked like a certain win against Fulham after Cody Gakpo scored in the 94th minute to complete a 2-1 comeback lead at Craven Cottage.
Despite Liverpool's early dominance, it is the host who struck first as former Reds man Harry Wilson continued his sensational form by making it eight goal contributions in as many Premier League games inside the opening 20 minutes, beating Liverpool's offside trap.
The visitors would not respond until three minutes before the hour mark, when Florian Wirtz controversially restored parity despite appearing to be in an offside position, with the assistant referee and VAR having contested opinions.
Cody Gakpo thought he jad wom it when he arrived at the back post to score from close range, but the hosts found their way back in it, albeit through an unusual source, with substitute Harrison Reed scoring his first Premier League goal since April 2023 with a 97th-minute rocket.
The goal means Liverpool failed to extend their lead over Chelsea and Man United, who are immediately below them in the standings, while they also fall two more points behind third-place Aston Villa, and now 14 points behind leaders Arsenal.
6. Sunderland take their share at generous Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur's inconsistency at home continues as Sunderland scored a second-half equalizer in their meeting on Sunday to deny them what could have been just their third win out of ten at home in the league this season.
The host took the lead through Ben Davies, after Micky Van de Ven's goalbound effort came off him on the half-hour, but Thomas Frank's team failed to add to their lead, despite dominating the statistics.
Sunderland drew level through Brian Brobbery 10 minutes from time. The Dutch striker fired home a ferocious strike for his third Premier League goal, after a sweeping team move that left Spurs in no man's land.
It finished all square in North London, and the lone point was enough for Sunderland to keep up with the big boys, while Spurs now have two wins in their last 11 Premier League games and remain outside the top half.
7. Newcastle's match history in Palace wins

Newcastle United achieved back-to-back New Year's opening fixture wins for the first time since 2014, after beating Crystal Palace on Sunday to add to the victory over Tottenham Hotspur in their first game of 2025.
Late goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Malick Thiaw gave them a 2-0 victory over struggling Palace at St. James Park, allowing them to move into the top half for the first time this season.
Bad news for Palace, who are now winless in seven and drop into the bottom half, with tough fixtures against Aston Villa, Sunderland, and Chelsea lined up for them in the coming weeks.
A 2-0 victory also saw Newcastle United keep a fifth consecutive home clean sheet against the Eagles, equaling the record for most against a single team after doing so against Coventry City between 1994 and 1998.
8. Wolves came to life at Hammers' expense

Wolves finally secured their first Premier League win of the season in a sensational 3-0 victory over a sorry West Ham United on Saturday evening, with all goals coming in the first half.
Inspired by 18-year-old Mateus Mane, who became the club's youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, the Molineux landlords were unstoppable in the early parts and finally reaped the rewards of their improved performances in recent weeks.
Jhon Arias gave them a fourth-minute lead, and then Hee-Chan Hwang doubled it from the penalty won by Mané, before the youngster sealed the win with a well-taken goal four minutes from the half-time break.
Although relegation appears inevitable at this stage of the season, only Arsenal and Newcastle United have won more than their four points in the last two gameweeks, and improved results like this could alter their fate, if they continue on the path.
West Ham United continue living dangerously, and are now winless in nine games, including four defeats in their last five. Nuno Espirito Santo is running out of time, and may soon be shown the exit door.
9. Brighton end winless run with Burnley

After six winless games completely changed the narrative of their season, Fabian Hurzeler was again a happy man on Saturday evening, after his Brighton team secured their first win since the end of November.
Yasin Ayari and Georginio Rutter scored in either half to gun down Burnley, and deliver their first home win in this fixture since August 2013 back in the Championship, ending a run of seven winless in such matches.
Brighton move from 14th to 10th on the log, overtaking Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, and Spurs, while Burnley remain in the drop zone, and without a win in 11 games.
10. Igor Thiago's hat-trick sank Everton

Everton missed the chance to move into the top six as they were beaten in a six-goal thriller at home by Brentford, whose ego was fueled by Igor Thiago's hat-trick.
The Brazilian scored the only first-half goal, and added a second just a minute after Nathan Collins made it 2-0, then sealed his hat-trick two minutes to the end of normal time to take his Premier League tally to 14 this season.
Beto made it 3-1 six minutes after the hour mark while Thierno Barry grabbed another one for the host in the second minute of added time as it finished 4-2 to Keith Andrews' team at the Hills Dickinson stadium.
Everton drops to 12th as a result, while Brentford moves up to seventh with 30 points, just four behind fourth-place Liverpool.
