Weekend of Nov. 1-3: Standout Performers in Each of Europe Top Five Leagues

  Hassan Afolabi November 4, 2024

Here comes another episode of our weekly nomination of the most standout individuals in each of Europe top five leagues.

The weekend saw some players display quality performances and below are our nominations from the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga and the French Ligue 1.

Standout Performers in Each of Europe Top Five Leagues

English Premier League: Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth

On a weekend where the popular names failed to make telling impact, Antoine Semenyo's was of the highest order as he inspired his team to their first-ever win over Manchester City.

Bournemouth had lost 16 and drawn one of 17 meetings with Manchester City before kickoff in the Vitality stadium on Saturday evening but nine minutes into the contest, the Ghanaian had the Cherries in dreamland with the opening goal of the game.

It was a well-taken goal by the 24-year-old, who held off his marker expertly and finishing on the turn following a low cross from Milot Kerkez. It was his fourth goal of the season for Andoni Iraola's side, all of which have come in the league.

After the goal, more work was to be done and Semenyo was always up and running, leading the counter on every rare Bournemouth break until their lead was doubled through Evanilson.

Semenyo also played an important role in the second goal, his excellent through ball found the run of Kerkez, who squared the ball for the Brazilian striker to slide past Ederson four minutes after the hour mark.

  • 1 big chance created
  • 3 chances created
  • 14 duels won
  • 3 of 3 tackles won
  • 6 of 7 dribbles completed
  • 6 recoveries

The former Bristol man is the secret behind Bournemouth's good run of form, and was the major architect of their first-ever win against Manchester City.

Antoine Semenyo is our Premier League player of the week, edging brace hero Dominic Solanke as well as teammate, Milot Kerkez.

Spainsh La Liga: Dani Olmo of Barcelona

A weekend that saw the cancellation and postponement of a couple of matches in the Spanish top-flight due to the disastrous flood in Valencia, Dani Olmo shone brighter than any other.

Making his first start since his one-month injury lay-off, the former RB Leipzig man bagged a first-half brace to lead Hansi Flick's side extend their gap lead on the league summit to nine.

The 26-year-old opened the scoring in the 12th minute, making run behind before firing home a Lamine Yamal chip pass. The lead was doubled by captain Raphinha around ten minutes later.

Olmo completed his brace and helped the host make it 3-0 a minute past the half-hour mark. This time from a Balde cross, he fired his shot into the bottom corner to literally put the gane beyond the visitors, went on a grab a consolation after the break in a 3-1 loss.

In three league starts, Dani Olmo now has five goals. His start at Barcelona has been very impressive, and the club be glad he started where he left off before his injury in September.

Italian Serie A: Ademola Lookman of Atalanta

For the second gameweek running, the Nigerian is our pick as the best player in the Serie A and this time, he scored a brace to help Atalanta see of league leadeds right in their own backyard.

Gian Piero Gasperini led his team to the Maradona in an early kickoff on Sunday, knowing their host was on a run of six straight wins and had not lost a home game under Antonio Conte, winning all six across all competitions.

Ademola Lookman was not to know these as it took him less than ten minutes to open the scoring, becoming the first player of a visiting team to score an open play opener in the Maradona this season.

The CAF Player of the Year award front-runner doubled his and Atalanta's lead one minute after the half-hour mark, once again displaying his clinical finishing prowess to power a fine strike past Meret in goal.

Lookman, who has now made it four goals and two assists in his last two games was withdrawn in the 76th minute, before substitute Mateo Retegui scored deep in added time to seal a 3-0 win for the visitors.

Lookman is the deserving winner from Italy, and the Nigerian takes his place in our list, not for the first time this season.

German Bundesliga: Harry Kane of Bayern Munich

The England skipper was directly involved in all three goals as Vincent Kompany's side secured an impressive win, which saw them establish a three point gap-lead at top of the league after Leipzig fell in Dortmund.

Fresh from picking up the Gerd Muller trophy at the start of last week at the Ballon d'or ceremony in Paris, Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot against Union Berlin after Michael Olise won a foul off Benedict Hollerbach in the 15th minute.

By scoring the goal, he not only reached double figures in the competition this season but also scored for the third game running in the Bundesliga, his longest scoring run in the competition since scoring in five straight between early October and late November in 2023.

He then sets up Kingsley Coman for 2-0 two minutes before the end of the normal time of the first-half and six minutes after the resumption of hostilities from the half-time break, he scored the third to seal a 3-0 win.

With two goals and one assist, he takes his league goal involvements this season to 17, making him share the status of the most productive player in top five leagues so far with Frankfurt's Omar Marmoush, the same player he just edged to this nomination.

French Ligue 1: Gaetan Perrin of Auxerre

Auxerrer did not only get one of those dream wins during the weekend but their player, Gaetan Perrin is nominated as our best performer in the weekend in France's top league.

The French winger scored twice as Christophe Pelissier secured a 4-0 win over Rennes to take them into the top half of the table with their third unbeaten, their longest in the season so far.

Perrin opened the scoring three minutes before the half-hour. A defensive clearance found the Frenchman on the edge of the area. He controlled with his chest before before firing a low shot into the bottom left corner.

He completed his brace 12 minutes later, emphatically finishing an excellent through pass from Hamed Traore to make it 2-0, becoming the first Auxerre player to score a Ligue 1 brace since Olivier Kapo in May 2012.

  • 3 chances created
  • 2 big chance created
  • 2 of 2 accurate crosses
  • 2 of 3 dribbles completed

An excellent performance from Gaetan Perrin, taking his goal tally in the competition this season to three, including three more assists.

He is our most standout player in the French top-flight during the weekend, and so takes his place in our nomination.

Player of the Week

These are the best players in each of the top five leagues, and the player with the biggest impact has to be Ademola Lookman, given the context behind his performance in the backyard of league leaders, Napoli.

No player scored more than his two goals, and although some others like Harry Kane did added one more assist, he did not both of his goals from open play, and away to Napoli for Atalanta is a much tougher game than Union Berlin at home for Bayern Munich.
