Serhou Guirassy and the stars of the weekend in Europe top 5 leagues

  Hassan Afolabi February 24, 2025

On this week's edition of top five players from the weekend in each of Europe's top five leagues, Serhou Guirassy leads the way with a four-goal performance in a massive win for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

The Guinean is joined by Ademola Lookman, Marco Asensio, Jubal, and Nico Williams as all these players delivered astonishing performances for their respective clubs to secure wins.

Here's a breakdown of how each of these players fared in their respective leagues, and the numbers that ensured they are the nominees ahead of other impressive stars from their respective leagues.

Top Stars of the Weekend From Top 5 Leagues

English Premier League: Marco Asensio of Aston Villa

Marco Asensio finally arrived for Aston Villa as his second-half brace secured a comeback home win for Aston Villa, ending a four-game winless home run against Saturday's visitors, Chelsea.

Despite having to come back in the second half, it wasn't really a poor showing from the host in the first half, and Asensio was active all game, pulling the strings for Unai Emery's charge.

Heading into the game, Villa had not won in five Premier League games, a poor run that saw them drop in the standings, but a hard-fought draw against Liverpool in midweek gave a much-needed boost.

The Spanish attacker, on loan from PSG Paris Saint-Germain, leveled matters for the host three minutes from the hour mark, with fellow January signing Marcus Rashford managing to beat the offside line to set him up for a simple finish.

It stayed even until one minute to the end of normal time, Rashford again getting the ball and sending in a low cross, which was met by Asensio, and the former Real Madrid man applied a one-time finish to complete the comeback.

His brilliant outing not only returns Villa to winning ways but also sees them avoid further falls and, at the same time, close the gap on a place in the top four to just two.

Asensio is our player of the weekend in the Premier League, beating the likes of Brennan Johnson, Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai and teammate, Marcus Rashford, to the nomination.

Spanish LaLiga: Nico Williams of Athletic Club

Athletic Club needed a win to strengthen their grip on fourth place in LaLiga after Villarreal edged Vallecano on Saturday, and they did respond in emphatic fashion on Sunday, securing a 7-1 win over the visitors in Sam Mames.

At the heart of such an impressive attacking display was Nico Williams, the Spanish winger who finished the game with two goals, more than he had all season in the competition, and one more assist to add to his previous four.

It looks like the 22-year-old is finally coming to live with productivity this campaign, having registered attacking returns in each of his two previous games across all competitions.

He assisted Mikel Jauregizar for the opening goal in the opening ten minutes, laying off the ball for the midfielder after cutting in from the left.

He doubled the host's advantage five minutes after the half hour. Nico received a simple pass from Yuri Berchiche, the young winger then drove at the visitors' defence, skipping past multiple challenges before firing home for a beautiful solo goal.

He completed his brace six minutes after the hour mark, cutting inside from the left and unleashing a thunderous strike into the top corner for 5-1 before his withdrawal two minutes later.

It was unarguably his best performance so far this season, and his brace takes him to 30 senior career goals for both club and country, six of which have come this season for Bilbao, taking him closer to his highest scoring season for the club, nine in 2022/23.

The Spaniard is our player of the weekend in LaLiga, and the array of top clubs interested in luring him away from Athletic Club will be delighted, and if he can continue with his new found consistency until the end of the season, then his paying release clause will not be an issue for any of his suitors.

Italian Serie A: Ademola Lookman of Atalanta

Ademola Lookman continues to show why he is a top professional as he inspired Atalanta to a return to winning ways at the end of a week of criticism and controversy.

The current CAF Player of the Year winner, making his first Serie A appearance since picking up an injury at the end of January, showed what the club has been missing in his absence as he found the back of the net twice in a 5-0 away win at Empoli.

Fresh from criticism from his manager for taking a penalty in the mid-week loss to Club Brugge, the Nigerian put it all behind him, and it was obvious right from kickoff on Sunday evening.

He was up and running all the first half as an Atalanta side who won just once in six games without him took a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break thanks to a Mateo Retegui goal, which doubles their advantage having left through an Emmanuel Gyasi own goal.

Lookman got his reward for a classy performance just before the interval, scoring from close range from a Mateo Retegui pass. He had much to do, though, to calmly beat the Goalkeeper off his line, and guide the ball into the empty net under huge pressure and from a narrow angle.

He scored again to make it 4-0 five minutes before the hour mark, this time firing home a left-footed shot into the back of the net following a pass from Dutch midfielder, Martin de Roon.

Davide Zapacosta added a fifth afterwards with Lookman withdrawn for the final 15 minutes, after leaving his mark on the contest, and casting out any doubt about his commitment to the club while he remains under contract.

With 12 League goals this season, the 27-year-old is now just one shy of his highest in a league campaign, set in his first season with Atalanta, while he has already equaled his highest scoring season with 17 across all competitions.

Lookman also picked up his seventh player of the match award of the season for Atalanta, further highlighting his importance in the team and why he is our pick as the best in the Serie A during the weekend.

German Bundesliga: Serhou Guirassy of Borussia Dortmund

Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy delivered a five-star performance against Union Berlin, scoring four goals in a 6-0 win for Borussia Dortmund, who put behind their recent woes in a convincing win.

Nico Kovac led his side out on Saturday afternoon, having failed to score or win in their last two games, which included a disappointing 2-0 loss away to Bochum last time out in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund, who had not recorded a win in their previous five home games in the League since a 4-0 success against Freiburg in November, were desperate to return to winning ways and had fallen out of the top ten at the end of the previous matchday.

They got off to a promising start and took a 2-0 lead five minutes before the interval, as Serhou Guirassy headed home a Pascal Gross' cross from close range, adding to Diogo Leite's own goal midway through the half.

The goal takes Guirassy to double figures in the Bundesliga this season, achieving the milestone for the third straight campaign since moving to the German topflight with Stuttgart in 2022-23.

His day was only getting better, though, as he went on to score an eight-minute hat-trick inside the final quarter of the game, scoring first in the 75th minute, tapping home from close range after being set up by Pascal Gross.

Five minutes later, Maximilian Beier found him in almost a similar position for an easy finish, and moments later, Guirassy completed a second-half hat-trick with his fourth goal of the game in the 83rd minute, heading home a Pascal Gross cross.

Beier added one more to make 6-0 later in the game, with Pascal Gross also recording his fourth assist of the day in a masterful performance for the German as well.

Guirassy, who now has 13 Bundesliga goals to his name this campaign, is our pick as the best in the Bundesliga during the weekend, and who dares challenge a man who beat the Goalkeeper four times in less than an hour and a half on the pitch.

His superb performance helped Dortmund move back into the top ten, while the goals were also very helpful, as it made the club recover from -1 to +5 goal difference.

French Ligue 1: Jubal of AJ Auxerre

It was a weekend to remember for both the Brazilian defender and his club, Auxerre, as they secured a massive 3-0 home win over Olympique Marseille, with the man himself finding the back of the net on two occasions.

They took the lead out of nothing five minutes after the half hour, with Gaetan Perrin finding the far corner with a brilliant strike as they hit their pestering visitors on the counter.

Jubal then got on the scoresheet from the spot to double the hosts' advantage, after Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli was penalized for a foul on Lassine Sinayoko 15 minutes from time.

The center back completed his brace in the first minute of added time, heading home from a Clement Akpa's header from a corner to make it 3-0, completing a 6-1 league double over the visitors, having not won in any of their previous eight meetings.

31-year-old Jubal also won 100 percent of his seven duels and made some important tackles to ensure Marseille had nothing going for them in the entirety of the game.

He is our pick as the most standout performer in the French topflight this weekend, and who else can be more deserving?

Ultimate Player of the Weekend

Serhou Guirassy, without a doubt, ticks all the boxes as the ultimate player of the weekend with his four-goal haul for Borussia Dortmund in their big win over Union Berlin during the weekend.

The current top scorer in the UEFA Champions League once again displayed his goalscoring prowess, and only Freiburg outscored him amongst the other clubs during the weekend in the Bundesliga.
