Samuel Okwaraji And 20 Nigerian Footballers Who Died in Their Prime

Today marks the 36th anniversary of the unforgettable passing of Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, the eloquent Super Eagles midfielder and qualified lawyer whose life was tragically cut short on the pitch.

Samuel Okwaraji collapsed in the 77th minute during a 1990 World Cup qualifier against Angola at Lagos’ National Stadium on 12 August 1989—a moment forever etched in Nigerians’ hearts.

Though rushed to medical care, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, becoming the first known Nigerian to lose their life while playing football at a professional level.

An autopsy revealed that an enlarged heart and hypertensive cardiomyopathy led to the sudden congestive heart failure that claimed him at just 25 years old.

On the anniversary of his passing, we take a look at 19 other Nigerian players who died in their prime, leaving behind not only unfulfilled promises but also families, friends, and the lives ahead of them.
