preview of 8 must-watch fixtures as football returns after the October 2025 break

Club football returns this weekend, following another international break, as players resume their club commitments after representing their respective countries during the October 2025 international games.

Nine African countries and a few in Europe and Asia secured their passage to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joining South Americans, who concluded their qualifying campaign in September.

As hostilities resume in club football this weekend, clubs who parted company last time on a high will be hopeful of picking up where they left off, while those on the receiving end will be looking for a fresh start and getting back momentum ahead of crucial weeks.

In this article, Betrekatips looks at eight must-watch fixtures across the top 10 European leagues this weekend, when fans will be eager to satisfy their longing with the best clashes football has to offer.

From the Premier League's biggest rivalry to the classic in the Bundesliga, here are the eight must-watch fixtures this weekend.

Eight match watch fixtures this weekend

Premier League: Liverpool vs. Manchester United

Considered the biggest rivalry in English football, even though both teams are making the headlines for opposing reasons, their status remains that of two of the best teams in world football.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United have won the league title a record 20 times each, and their reputations extend to the continent, where they have won the most Champions League titles among English teams, six and three respectively.

Heading into their clash this weekend at Anfield, Liverpool, who have not lost any of their last nine Premier League home games in this fixture, are the overwhelming favorites, especially given the poor form of Manchester United.

Although two of their last three league meetings have ended in draws, United's last league win against the Reds came in August 2022, a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim resumes his quest for his first back-to-back league win since his appointment at United, and after leading them to three straight home wins in the competition for the first time in two years just before the break, there's reason for optimism.

But against a Liverpool team that rarely loses a league home game, with an average of 0.75 home losses per season in the previous four, it will be very unusual for the visitors to end their winless league run at Anfield, since Wayne Rooney's lone goal gave them a 1-0 victory back in January 2016.

LaLiga: Villarreal vs. Real Betis

Two teams that have started the season with real intention, Villarreal and Real Betis, are positioned third and fourth, respectively, on the LaLiga standings after eight games.

Saturday's host, Villarreal, has not only built on their form from last season, but their only two league losses so far have come away to the two Madrid clubs, while their 14 goals are only topped by four other teams. They have also conceded the joint fewest goals, with eight.

Betis, one of the four teams with the best defensive record, trail Villarreal by one point on the league standings, and are unbeaten in all five away games across all competitions this season.

They are also unbeaten in their last three visits to Villarreal, winning the last two, but it is the Yellow Submarine, who boast the superior record in their last 24 meetings, winning 11 and drawing five.

Serie A: AS Roma vs. Inter

AS Roma find themselves in a position of prominence after six games into the Serie A season, taking five wins and losing just once, a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Torino in Round three, an avoidable blemish in what could have been a perfect start.

Inter, on the other hand, have turned around a poor start, and have now won each of their last five games across all competitions, moving back into the top four after their win over Cremonese before the international break.

It's a crucial game for both sides. For Gian Pierro Gasperini, a win over Inter would spark conversations about his side being one of the title contenders, but a defeat could see them move out of the top five after the weekend, while it also helps Inter continue to build momentum.

Inter are unbeaten in their last eight visits to Roma in the Serie A, winning five and drawing three, since a 2-1 loss in the Olympic stadium in October 2016, when Mauro Icardi's second-half own goal made the difference.

Roma has, however, beaten Inter at San Siro. They have won three and drawn as many away at Inter since February 2017, including a 1-0 victory in their most recent meeting in April, when Inter suffered a third straight loss having previously lost to Bologna and Milan.

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund

The giants clash in the Bundesliga this weekend as Bayern Munich plays host to Borussia Dortmund in 'Der Klassiker', with the two sides having an unbeaten record to protect after avoiding a defeat since the start of the season.

Although Borussia Dortmund have won just four of their last 26 meetings across all competitions, this appears to be the best time for the two sides to square up, with the odds closer than they've ever been in recent years.

Bayern Munich have maintained a perfect start to the season, winning all ten games across all competitions, while their opponents have remained a close second in the league, trailing by four points.

The Yellow and Black walls are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Bayern, their longest in this fixture since winning five consecutive games between October 2010 and May 2012.

Dortmund do need that statement win after drawing their biggest games against Juventus and RB Leipzig, while Bayern will be out to stop them in a match that would be very decisive in the course of their respective seasons.

Ligue 1: PSG vs. Strasbourg

Since their promotion to the top-flight in 2017, Strasbourg have lived all the emotions in their 17 meetings with Paris Saint-Germain, which have produced two wins and eleven losses across all competitions.

In that period, only in two seasons have they lost both league meetings against Les Parisiens, an indication that an upset is always on the horizon, even more so after winning their most recent meeting in May.

European champions PSG have battled with injuries this season, a plight that has seen no outfielder start all of their seven league games, with important players like Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia limited to unsatisfactory minutes.

They have remained with their heads held high, though, and head into the Friday night fixture at the Parc des Princes top of the league standings. Strasbourg, though, will overthrow them with a win before the other games kick off later in the weekend.

Eredivisie: Ajax vs. AZ Alkmaar

A season that started with so much sparkle completely faded for AZ Alkmaar after a run of four winless games, which ended with back-to-back defeats, until their narrow 2-1 win over newly promoted Telstar before the international break.

For Ajax, inconsistency has been the hallmark of an immature season, and after 10 games across all competitions, Johnny Heitinga's charges are yet to win back-to-back games and have recorded four wins overall.

They are winless in their last eight meetings with AZ, losing six, and have not beaten the visitors in the league since April 2021, making it even more difficult to improve on a recent run of one win in five.

Premiership: Kilmarnock vs. Hearts

After finding themselves in the relegation battle last season, things have improved significantly at Hearts, and they now find themselves top of the Scottish Premiership seven games into the season.

They have remained unbeaten, with six wins from seven games, but even though they've enjoyed a 2-0 victory away to Rangers, the trip to the BBSP Stadium in Rugby Park on Saturday evening against Kilmarnock is expected to be their toughest test yet.

The hosts have only lost to Celtic so far and are third on the log. Their recent head-to-heads have also been fairly balanced, two wins apiece, although the visitors have been victorious in the last two.

First Division: St. Truiden vs. Anderlecht

Anderlecht are unbeaten in their last 14 meetings with St. Truiden, winning 13, but their meeting at the Diao Wasabi stadium on Saturday is expected to be more competitive.

Both sides have had a fair start to the season, picking up points that place them third and fifth on the log, with St. Truiden trailing the 2017 champions by one point.

Anderlecht's focus will be catching Union Saint Gilloise, who are five points ahead in first, but St. Truiden will fancy their chances of moving into the top three at the end of the weekend by earning their first win in this fixture since November 2018.
