A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

An eventful Champions League week saw the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain steal the headlines in individual and collective achievement, respectively, but there was more beyond the headlines.

Betrekatips takes you through a recovery week as the top European teams battled for supremacy in their most premier competition.

Biggest Highlights of the Champions League Round 2

Hat-trick hero Kylian Mbappé catching the greats

Kylian Mbappé scored his first hat-trick of the season to continue his impressive start, taking his goal tally to 15 in 12 games, while leading the race for both league and Champions League top scorer awards.

His hat-trick against Kairat Almaty on Saturday was his fourth in the Champions League, moving level with his countryman Karim Benzema, while only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, with eight each, and Robert Lewandowski, with six, have more in the competition.

Mbappé's latest treble was also his third on the road, moving ahead of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, and tying with Filippo Inzaghi for the most Champions League hat-tricks away from home.

His goals set the tone for a 5-0 win in Kazakhstan as Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz came off the bench to add two more, helping Real Madrid return to winning ways after the derby humiliation during the weekend.

Depleted PSG still superior to Barcelona's finest

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

On a trip where five starters were missing, Paris Saint-Germain delivered a massive statement away in Barcelona as they came from a goal down to beat their hosts and continue their perfect start in the competition.

It appeared the defending champions had the toughest draw of all the top teams in the league phase, but after getting Barcelona out of the way despite the circumstances, one can only say that Luis Enrique and his men relish such challenges.

It was their third trip to Barcelona since their Remontada debacle in 2017, and they were able to make it three straight all-comeback wins, thanks to a spirited collective performance after withstanding their host's early dominance.

Ferran Torres opened the scoring against a team without all three starting attackers in Ballon d'Or holder Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué, as well as João Neves and Marquinhos.

Senny Manyulu restored parity before halftime, and substitute Gonçalo Ramos sealed the deal on the stroke of 90 minutes to inflict a first defeat of the season on Hansi Flick’s side, their first at home in the Champions League since a 4-1 loss in April 2024, also to PSG.

José Mourinho beaten on Stamford Bridge return

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

Ricard Rios's first-half own goal was all it took for Chelsea to beat their former boss and return to winning ways with their first Champions League win of the season after a difficult spell in September.

José Mourinho, who beat Chelsea in his first-ever return to Stamford Bridge with Inter in 2010, has now failed to win in his last eight visits. Tuesday’s loss with Benfica makes it six defeats and two draws.

Benfica are now without a win after two Champions League games this season, having lost to Qarabag in round one — a result that saw Bruno Lage dismissed and replaced by José Mourinho.

Meanwhile, Chelsea got a much-needed win to boost their optimism ahead of a crunch Premier League meeting with defending champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

It’s Galatasaray’s miracle against Liverpool in Istanbul

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

Victor Osimhen made history as the first Nigerian to reach 10 Champions League goals when he scored from the penalty spot, a goal that was enough for Galatasaray to beat Liverpool and pick up their first Champions League win this season.

In their history, Galatasaray had never lost a home game to Liverpool, winning one and drawing one in the two previous times they hosted the Premier League champions.

Tuesday was no exception. Even though Arne Slot’s side dominated, there was no beating Ugurcan Cakir in goal for Galatasaray.

The decisive moment came early in the 14th minute as Dominik Szoboszlai was penalized for a foul on Baris Alper Yilmaz, leading to the penalty converted by Osimhen for his historic goal.

Galatasaray now has three points after two games, a much-needed response to their 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Frankfurt in round one. They will now look to make another statement when they host Bodo/Glimt next time out in the competition.

Newcastle United ended a 12-year drought

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

Newcastle United stormed to a 4-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels to secure their first away win in Europe since February 2013.

Since Shola Ameobi's second-half penalty gave them a 1-0 win over Metalist Kharkiv in Ukraine, 14 English teams had won on the road in Europe before Newcastle did last night, and it was more than just the win for the Toon Army.

Anthony Gordon, scorer of their only goal in the defeat against Barcelona in round one, was also among the goals again, scoring two penalties to become the first Newcastle United player to score in back-to-back Champions League games since Shola Ameobi and Alan Shearer in 2002.

Nick Woltemade, who opened the scoring, also made history, becoming the first-ever player in the history of Newcastle United to score on both their Premier League and Champions League debuts.

A much-needed and huge win for Eddie Howe’s side, whose only wins this season had come against relegation-battling Wolves and third-tier side Bradford City in the Carabao Cup.

Arsenal ended poor streak against Olympiacos

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

Greek side Olympiacos Piraeus had enjoyed an unusual run at the Emirates Stadium, winning all three of their most recent visits across the Champions League and Europa League.

However, the Gunners showed just how much has changed since the last time, storming to a first home win over their visitors since October 2012, when goals from Gervinho, Lukas Podolski, and Aaron Ramsey earned Arsène Wenger a 3-1 victory.

This time, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka were the goal scorers, as Arsenal kept their first home clean sheet against Olympiacos since a 2-0 win in September 2009.

Martinelli, who made it back-to-back Champions League goals, has now equaled his best scoring season in the competition, while Bukayo Saka scored a goal in three consecutive first home games of the Champions League since their return to the competition in 2023.

His goal in the closing stages also made it five consecutive games that Arsenal have had a substitute on the scoresheet, their longest such run since August to September 2004.

Dortmund scored four again, but with a win

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

Borussia Dortmund continued their rich attacking form in the Champions League after scoring another four goals, this time to seal a 4-1 home win over Spanish club Athletic Club.

The German team was denied maximum points in their opener against Juventus, who scored two added-time goals to earn a point in an eight-goal thriller in Turin.

However, Nico Kovac left nothing to chance this time, as it was his side that scored two late goals after the visitors halved the deficit just after the hour mark.

Ryan Svensson gave them a first-half lea,d and it was doubled five minutes after the restart, only for Gorka Guruzeta to pull one back 11 minutes later.

Serhou Guirassy and Julian Brandt scored late on to seal the win for Dortmund, who now boast four points after two games and have scored the joint-most goals in the competition alongside their German counterparts, Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich made light work of Pafos

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

Bayern Munich beat Pafos FC by five goals to one on Tuesday, with Harry Kane bagging a brace while Nicolas Jackson got off the mark with his first goal for the club.

Cypriot side Pafos made a good impression on their debut a fortnight ago when they forced Olympiacos to a stalemate in Piraeus, despite playing more than an hour with 10 men.

However, the Bavarians were simply too formidable, scoring four times through Kane (2), Jackson, and Raphael Guerreiro before Pafos responded with one on the stroke of halftime.

Mislav Oršić beat Manuel Neuer with a sensational goal for Pafos’s first-ever in the Champions League proper, and Michael Olise, who had assisted two of the first-half goals, scored the only one of the second half to complete a 5-1 victory.

Inter stay perfect as Lautaro Martínez made history

The Argentine opened the scoring on the half-hour mark and completed the win with the third near the end, taking Inter to six points after two games and positioning them fourth on the log due to goal difference.

Lautaro Martínez has now scored 23 goals in the competition, overtaking Steven Gerrard (21) and Roberto Firmino (22), and is now level with Frank Lampard and Leroy Sané.

Revenge for Atalanta against Club Brugge

A thrilling Champions League Round 2 delivered standout moments — from Mbappé’s record-equaling hat-trick and PSG’s comeback at Barcelona to Newcastle’s long-awaited away win and Arsenal’s revival — as Europe’s elite battled for supremacy.

When Christos Tzolis curled a brilliant effort into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead in Bergamo, it looked as though they had Atalanta’s number again.

However, with the hosts determined to make up for losing both legs of this fixture in last season’s elimination playoff, they began the second half with a clear intention of turning it around.

Ivan Juric made four changes before his side could find a response. Mario Pašalić was awarded a penalty after winning a foul in the box, and substitute Lazar Samardžić converted to restore parity in the 74th minute.

Pašalić then headed home the winner three minutes from time following a corner kick, which was glanced into his path by Yunus Musah’s header.
