Erling Haaland and Thelo Aasgaard achieved a sensational feat on Tuesday evening when they both starred in Norway's thrilling win over Moldova in the European World Cup qualifiers.

Norway set their third biggest win, and the duo were hugely involved, with Haaland scoring five goals and assisting two more. At the same time, substitute Thelo Aasgaard also scored four to share the match balls with the Manchester City striker.

Yes. Two or more players have scored a hat-trick in the same game on plenty of occasions in football. The recent achievement of Erling Haaland and Theo Aasgaard for Norway isn't the first of its kind; it dates back over a millennium.

Three Hat-tricks in One Match

In the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey in 1916, Barcelona and Real Madrid clashed, and the game had to be played four different times as there was neither an aggregate rule nor a penalty shootout to break the tie.

Barcelona had won the first leg 2-1 while Real Madrid won 4-1 in the second, and a third was required to decide who progresses into the final, where Athletic Club awaited.

Three players, Luis Belaunde and Santiago Bernabéu for Real Madrid and Paulino Alcántara for Barcelona, scored hat-tricks in a 6-6 draw after extra time, so a fourth fixture was played, and Los Blancos eventually won by 4-2 after extra time.

When Players Scored Two Hat-tricks in the Same Game

Glasgow was selected as the venue for the final of the fifth European Cup, and history was made on the night, when Real Madrid won the title for the fifth consecutive season, as old as the competition itself.

Also making the headlines on the night were the duo of Ferenc Puskás and Alfredo Di Stéfano, who scored four and three respectively in a goal-fest match.

They became the first duo to score a hat-trick in the same match in the history of the competition, while no other duo has repeated the achievement in any major final to date.

Arsenal 6-1 Southampton (May 2003) | Two Players Scored Hat-tricks

After losing the first leg at Saint Mary's, Arsenal took the reverse fixture of the 2002-03 Premier League meeting with Southampton personally, and scored five goals before the visitors could respond in a match that ultimately finished 6-1.

Robert Pirès and Jermaine Pennant helped themselves to a hat-trick each, becoming the first set of players to do so in the competition in the Premier League era.

Real Madrid concluded the group campaign in the first of their Champions League three-peat with a blast, beating Swedish side Malmö by 8-0.

Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo shone brightest on the night in the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, both scoring a hat-trick each to ensure Los Blancos finished with more group points than anyone that year.

Benzema scored the first two goals of the day, but it was Ronaldo who went on to score four goals in the span of 20 minutes to give the hosts a 6-0 lead, while Benzema completed his hat-trick with the final goal of the game to seal an 8-0 win.

A few days after their rampant European win over Malmö, Real Madrid put ten goals past Rayo Vallecano in a La Liga meeting as the game finished 10-2, where they had to come from behind.

It was a very eventful clash as Real Madrid took a third-minute lead, but the visitors turned it around and led 2-1 in the 12th minute. Then, the famous BBC attacking trio took matters into their own hands, and it was game over for Rayo.

Gareth Bale scored four, Karim Benzema scored three, and both shared the match balls, while the former also added one assist to his name, with Cristiano Ronaldo also scoring twice and assisting one in an evening to remember.

During Gary Neville's unfortunate short spell as Valencia head coach in 2016, he led his team to the Camp Nou, where they were taught harsh football lessons by a rampant Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

Striker Mauro Icardi and midfielder Éver Banega hit a hat-trick apiece for the Nerazzurri in Milan. Roberto Gagliardini scored the other one for Inter.

When Inter Milan took Atalanta apart in a Serie A clash in San Siro in 2017, the Argentina duo of Mauro Icardi and midfielder Éver Banega both scored a hat-trick, with Roberto Gagliardini scoring the other goal.

It was the striker Icardi, who first completed his hat-trick, scoring from a loose ball following a free-kick and then from the spot before heading home Banega's free-kick to seal the deal in the 26th minute.

Banega went on to score a brace before halftime and completed his hat-trick eight minutes after the hour mark to have his share of the match ball.

St. Mary’s witnessed the demolition of their darling Southampton as Leicester City thrashed the hosts 9-0, setting a record for the competition’s biggest away victory in a night that belonged to hat-trick scorers Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Pérez.

It was the Spaniard Pérez, who first completed his, adding a 57th-minute strike to a first-half brace, while Jamie Vardy scored twice after the interval, including an injury-time penalty, to add to his last-minute strike before halftime to join his teammate.

Manchester United have endured some embarrassing results against their city rivals since the takeover in 2008, and in one of those was a 6-3 thrashing in October 2022, at a time Erik Ten Hag was just getting started.

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored three goals apiece for Pep Guardiola's charges, with Antony grabbing what looked like a consolation at 6-1, before substitute Anthony Martial scored a late brace to make the scoreline a little less disrespectful.

Lyon 5-4 Montpellier (May 2023) | Two Players Scored Hat-tricks

Alexandre Lacazette and Elye Wahi went head-to-head in this Ligue 1 clash on the final day of the season as a nine-goal thriller, which ended dramatically, saw both players bag four goals each.

Elye Wahi completed his hat-trick and added another to help Montpellier establish a 4-1 lead five minutes before the hour mark, and was withdrawn with the score at 4-3 in the 80th minute, with Lacazette already on the scoresheet twice.

Alexandre Lacazette went on to score two more, including a 90+10th-minute winner to complete a sensational comeback, with the two players taking home a match ball each.

Who gets the match ball if two or more players score hat-tricks in a game?

There is no official rule in FIFA, UEFA, or national associations that specifically dictates who gets the match ball when multiple players score hat-tricks.

Previously, the first and general convention was that the first player to complete a hat-trick often claimed the ball. But since the introduction of multiple match balls (used for different halves or as spares), each player takes one.
