Picks, Previews, Predictions: The best fixtures from Europe's Top 5 leagues

After a pulsating European week, clubs return to league action this weekend, looking to write another chapter of what has become a season of twists and turns as we approach the halfway mark.

This weekend, the biggest fixture in the Premier League is the London derby, as Chelsea and Arsenal, two of the best teams in the world, lock horns, not only for bragging rights but for what may define their seasons.

In addition, the Bundesliga, Serie A, LaLiga, and Ligue 1 also have some epic installations. From Stamford Bridge to the Olympic Stadium in Rome, here are the fixtures to watch out for in Europe's top five leagues this weekend.

The best fixtures from Europe's Top 5 leagues

Premier League: Chelsea vs Arsenal

The clash of two of the best teams in the world, Chelsea and Arsenal, has primed ahead of the upcoming London derby, and the narrative surrounding it could mean it is the biggest game so far, in any league in the world.

The host, on the back of an impressive 3-0 victory over Barcelona, and the visitors have just humbled Bayern Munich, and are both second and first respectively in the Premier League, which makes Sunday's match all the more interesting.

Chelsea may find themselves down to fourth before kickoff should Manchester City and Aston Villa win their games, and Enzo Maresca's team could drop even further should they lose to Arsenal and Crystal Palace beat Man United by a healthy goal difference.

For Arsenal, losing would mean a six-point advantage is reduced to three, and with tough fixtures set to follow, a healthy lead could turn on its head, and the race would be wide open again.

It is a match that meant everything to the two sides as it could define their season, with Arsenal hopeful of establishing a nine-point gap over their main rival, while Chelsea intends to turn six into three.

Arsenal, who are unbeaten in Stamford Bridge since August 2018 have lost once away from home this season, which came against Liverpool at the end of August, while Chelsea have been beaten at home twice this season, Brighton and Sunderland.

On Sunday, it will be decided whether there'll be a title race in this season's Premier League or one team will have a free ride to it. Nevertheless, any result other than a win for Arsenal will again reignite the race, especially if City win at home to Leeds United.

Prediction: Chelsea 1-1 Arsenal

Serie A: Roma vs Napoli

The Serie A appears to be changing leadership every gameweek, and this weekend presents two teams with the opportunity to dethrone Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma at the top, while the Giallorossi can also stretch their advantage with a win.

First-place AS Roma play host to defending champions Napoli, currently sitting at third place, in the late-night kickoff on Sunday, with both teams looking to keep pace in a tight title race.

Should the two Milan clubs, AC and Inter, win their respective games this weekend against Lazio and Pisa, respectively, Roma and Napoli will surrender their positions, while the league leaders may drop even further should they lose and their rivals win.

It is a fierce fixture in all ramifications and neither will want to be on the losing side, especially Roma, whose title credentials are on the line, having lost their two games against fellow title contenders, Milan and Inter, so far.

Napoli have had joy in this fixture in recent times, winning six and drawing four of the last 11, but the host will also be inspired by their performances more recently, with one win and two draws in four against Gli Azzurri.

Prediction: Roma 1-1 Napoli

Ligue 1: AS Monaco vs PSG

After a run of three consecutive defeats in the league, AS Monaco has fallen from the top of the standings and out of a European place to seventh on the log.

It does not get any easier for a team that recently got beaten by Paris FC, Lens, and Rennes against league and European champions, who are also turning into the runaway leaders.

Paris Saint-Germain have won foue oc their last five games in the Ligue 1 without a loss, but with Marseille breathing down their necks with two points difference, Luis Enrique will know there is no room for slip-ups.

The Parisiens are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Monaco, winning four, and a win against a team whose only win in five games has come against Bodo/Glimt will not be far-fetched for the champions, who recently scored five in the Champions League.

Prediction: AS Monaco 1-4 PSG

Bundesliga: Leverkusen vs Dortmund

Bayern Munich is a class of its own in the Bundesliga, but the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund provide German fans with worthy competition when they go head to head, and this weekend, comes another installment.

The Bay Arena will play host to the biggest fixture in Germany this weekend as its occupants entertain Borussia Dortmund in the clash of third and fourth with a lot of stakes involved.

Bayer Leverkusen is just a point ahead of BVB, and a winner could move up to second if RB Leipzig falls at Borussia Monchengladbach in the Friday night kickoff.

The game will be so decisive for Dortmund as they need a big League win to project their beliefs, having failed to win in any of their games against the likes of Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, and RB Leipzig.

It doesn't get more difficult looking at their host, whose only league loss under Kasper Hjulmand has come against Bayern Munich, and also heads into the game on the back of an impressive victory away over Manchester City in the Champions League.

However, they do have causes to be optimistic as they are unbeaten in their last four visits to Saturday's venue, winning three, and have recently beaten Villarreal 4-0 in Europe's premier club competition.

Prediction: Leverkusen 2-2 Dortmund

LaLiga: Real Sociedad Villarreal

A few weeks ago, not many would have predicted that this fixture would make it to our list, but here we are, after the Anoeta club has been able to turn their season around as new manager Sergio Francisco is finally able to get his house in order.

They play host to high-flying Villarreal on Sunday looking to extend their unbeaten run across all competitions, which currently stands at six, with all four wins coming in their last five.

Villarreal have gone about their business with intentions so far, only losing to Real Madrid and Atlético in the league. The Yellow Submarines will at least move above Real Madrid with a win before Los Blancos play later in the day.

A win will also move them to first place should Barcelona lose to Deportivo Alaves on Saturday, and Marcelino Garcia will be keen on building on their impressive away record at San Sebastian, where they have five wins and a draw in eight visits.

Prediction: Real Sociedad 1-1 Villarreal
