  Hassan Afolabi October 18, 2024

Premier League actions return this weekend following the end of the international break and some exciting fuxtures are set to tbe staged in the United Kingdom this weekend, from the Saturday early kickoff to the Monday night curtain drawer

We take a look at the six important fixtures, involving the big teams in the division, from the biggest one featuring Liverpool against Chelsea to the one-sided on papers, as Manchester City travel to the Molineux.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

Liverpool braces itself up for what may be its most difficult test yet under Arne Slot as they play host to Chelsea in Anfield on Sunday in the biggest fixture of the Premier League Gameweek.

The two sides have had a good start to the season with the Reds occupying the top of the table while Chelsea completes the top four alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.

Sunday's match is expected to be as thrilling as this fixture has always been, even when either of the teams has regressed in standard, fans have rarely been left with nothing to cheer when Liverpool and Chelsea duel.

Form guide and head-to-head

Liverpool has won six of seven league games under Slot with their only defeat coming in Sunday's venue against Nuno Espirito Santo's Nottingham Forest. Aside from that blemish, it has been a perfect start to life under their new Dutch tactician.

The Reds boast the best defensive record so far with only two goals conceded after seven Premier League games. The little worry will be their scoring rates, as they have scored only five times in three home games so far.

The only meeting with a fellow Big Six rival came on the opening weekend and albeit it ended in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in Stamford Bridge, there's a lot of optimism heading into Sunday's match.

Chelsea has won each of their three away games in the league under Enzo Maresca, and have scored more goals on the road than anyone with ten, while only Liverpool betters their defensive record of only two goals conceded.

For games ending in 90 minutes, eight of the last nine meetings between Liverpool and Chelsea have ended in draws.

Liverpool has won just one of their last four home games against Chelsea, losing one.

Chelsea has won all three away Premier League games under Enzo Maresca, while Liverpool's only loss so far has come at home.

Liverpool vs Chelsea: Team news: Liverpool will be without both Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott due to injuries while Federico Chiesa is still a doubt. Arne Slot will however have both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah fresh for the game after both did not feature in their respective country's final game of the international break.

Chelsea does not have a lot of injury concerns as almost everyone is fit and available. Reece James recently returned from the sideline, although Sunday's game might come too soon, he still may be added to the squad list for the first time this season.

They will however be without the defensive duo of Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella, who are both suspended after picking up their fifth booking of the season in the draw with Forest.

Players to watch: Ryan Gravenberch has been the man for Liverpool this season, and it'll be interesting to see how the Dutchman fare against the likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, who have established themselves as the force and face of the Chelsea midfield.

Cole Palmer will be the main man for Chelsea and having been kept silent in the game against Manchester City earlier in the season, Sunday presents a chance to prove himself in a big game. Virgil van Dijk and co. will be waiting.

Prediction: Liverpool with a home advantage so a win for Arne Slot's side is more probable than a Chelsea win. 2-1 to Liverpool.

Manchester United vs Brentford

Manchester United return to action on Saturday and Erik Ten Hag will be hoping for a positive result after what was a forgettable run before the international break, where the club failed to win any of their final five games.

The pressure doesn't come any less for the Dutchman, knowing United have his potential replacements at the club should things go wrong henceforth. He is hanging on a thread, and at the same time his team look vulnerable.

And if there's anything that can add insult to injury, it's the sting of The Bees. Thomas Frank's side have scored in the opening two minutes in each of their last four Premier League games, which is bad news for United, who has neither won a game where they've conceded this season nor won a Premier League game when they've conceded the opening goal against a team still in the top-flight since a 3-2 win over Aston Villa in December last year.

Form guide and head-to-head

Manchester United are winless in each of their last five games across all competitions, equaling their longest winless run since a run of six winless between April and May in 2019. (For games ending in 90 minutes only).

Manchester United has lost their last two home games in the Premier League by an aggressive of 6-0.

Brentford has scored in all but one of their eight games across all competitions this season.

Brentford has lost all of their three away games in the Premier League this season.

Brentford has just one win in their last eleven meetings with Manchester United since 1938, drawing two.

Team news: Noussair Mazraoui, Alejandro Garnacho, Manuel Ugarte, and Amad Diallo all returned to training on Thursday after missing international duty. Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire were absent from Man United training due to injuries. They are not ruled out of Saturday.

Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, and Tyrell Malacia continue their recovery from injuries. Yoane Wissa, Rico Henry, Joshua Dasilva, and Aaron Hickey are the major absentees for the visitors.

Players to watch: Andre Onana for Manchester United and Bryan Mbeumo for Brentford

Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Brentford

AFC Bournemouth vs Arsenal

Arsenal travel to the Vitality Stadium in the final Premier League game on Saturday with the intention of stretching their impressive start to the season with another win.

Mikel Arteta's side placed third on the log, level on points with second-place Manchester City, having dropped four points of the possible 21 from seven games so far.

They face Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth, who have not been able to replicate last season's form under their Spanish manager. Arsenal are unbeaten in the Premier League this season and has not lost away from home in the competition since a 2-1 defeat at Fulham on the 31st of December 2023.

Arsenal are unbeaten in each of their nine meetings with Bournemouth across all competitions, winning eight, including each of the last five.

Team news: Arsenal will be without captain Martin Ødegaard, who continues to recover from an ankle injury picked up during last month's international break. Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are also concerns for Mikel Arteta, although are both expected to make the trip.

Jurrien Timber and Ben White are injury doubts while Kieran Tierney continues to miss out. For the host, only Tyler Adams is an injury doubt.

Players to watch: Antoine Semenyo for Bournemouth and Bukayo Saka for Arsenal

Prediction: Bournemouth 0-3 Arsenal

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City

Defending champions Manchester City takes on Wolves in the Molineux on Sunday, when they may have the chance to assume the league summit with a win depending on the result of Arsenal's trip to Bournemouth, and before Liverpool plays Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola's side left a lot to be desired in their narrow win over Fulham last time out as they were helped thanks to the poor finishing of Adama Traore, who missed three big chances of the visitors in a 3-2 win.

They face a Wolves side who has been the lowest team in the league this season, with their only point coming in a draw away to Forest, leaving them with one point after seven games.

Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

This is a fast-rising Premier League fixture as both teams have been very competitive in recent years, with consistency being a major letdown to them posing a real challenge for the title.

Brighton are known for their good football and have started this season keeping their identity even under a new manager in Fabian Hurzeler while Newcastle United remain their resilient self, and recently proved that in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

They occupied seventh and sixth respectively on the Premier League standing with the same points, while Brighton has a better goal difference of two.

Form guide and head-to-head

Brighton has also lost once in nine games across all competitions this season.

Newcastle United has lost one and won three in their last seven meetings with Brighton

Team news: Long-term absentees continue to recover for Newcastle United. Kieran Trippier is the only new player to be sidelined for Eddie Howe and the right-back will miss the game. Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United

Spurs looked as though they were back in business after the narrow home loss to Arsenal with a run of five straight wins across all competitions, including two in the Premier League. However, they were embarrassed in their final game before the break, having bottled a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Brighton.

For West Ham United, it's been downward since the departure of David Moyes but in all honesty, the final days of the Scott also held no promise. The team has been terrible and now has just two league wins so far, and have been sent packing from the Carabao Cup.

Form guide and head-to-head

Since the shocking loss to Wolves in February, only Arsenal, twice, and Manchester City have beaten Spurs at home.

Tottenham Hotspur has five of their last six games across all competitions.

West Ham United has not won back-to-back league games from February to March when they won two.

Tottenham has won four and drawn one of their last six home meetings with West Ham United.

Players to watch: Brennan Johnson for Tottenham and Tomas Soucek for the Hammers.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 West Ham United
