Premier League Round 9 Review: Things fall apart but Arsenal, Man United, pick up the pieces
Premier League review.

For the first time since Matchday 15 of 2016-16, all three of Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City have been beaten on the same Matchday, a trend that changed the look of the Premier League standings after nine games.
Sunderland, Leeds United, and Burnley completed a hat-trick of wins for newcomers, the first time it has happened since Matchday 10 of the 2020-21 campaign, with Chelsea, West Ham United, and Wolves being their respective victims.
Arsenal and Manchester United benefited from the losses to establish more ground for their own agendas and below is a review of all ten actions in the Premier League during the weekend, from Chelsea's shocker to City's stopper.
Premier League Round 9 Review
Sunderland stunned Chelsea at the Bridge
Sunderland continues their impressive return to the top flight, which has improved further thanks to their latest win, a comeback 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, their biggest so far.

The Black Cats had not won at Chelsea since a 2-1 comeback win in April 2014 and headed to London on Saturday against a team on a run of four straight wins, and had won more Premier League home points than anyone but Manchester City in 2025.
Enzo Maresca's charge got off a perfect start with Alejandro Garnacho getting his maiden goal less than four minutes in, but the visitors restored parity at the end of the first quarter, despite being the second-best.
Chelsea laboured for another goal but couldn't really make much of their dominance, and it was Regis Le Bris' side who scored the winner in the third minute of added time, with substitute Chemsdine Talbi scoring on the break after a great hold-up play by Brian Brobbery.
Sunderland moved second in the league standings after the win, and in contrast to the fate of previous newcomers, they will now focus on maintaining a top finish rather than worry about relegation.
Summer signings ended Brighton's dominance of Man United
After three consecutive home defeats to The Seagulls, Manchester United finally have redemption on Saturday as summer signings inspired them to a 4-2 win in Old Trafford, as their redemption continues.

They got off to the perfect start as Casemiro set up Matheus Cunha, who curled home a low shot from the edge of the box at the start of the second quarter, for his first Manchester United goal since his summer move from Wolves.
The lead was doubled ten minutes later as Casemiro's deflected shot sailed calmly into the back of the net, leaving goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen in no man's land.
Bryan Mbeumo added a controversial third as Luke Shaw clearly fouled Giorginio Rutter in the build-up. Anthony Taylor decided against overturning the decision, and the VAR also saw no reason to influence the on-field decision.
Danny Welbeck pulled one back with a scrumptious free-kick in the 74th minute, while young striker Charalampos Kostoulas came off the bench to head home James Milner's corner in the second minute of added time, setting up a nervy finish.
Bryan Mbeumo got his second and United's fourth of the evening one minute to the end of time to seal a 4-2 win, and United's third consecutive league win, their longest since a run of four in February 2024.
Liverpool suffered a fourth straight league defeat
Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League loss this season after falling 3-2 to a stubborn Brentford in the late kickoff on Saturday.

Having beaten Frankfurt 5-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday, Arne Slot's charge were looking to also turn their fortunes around in the league, but an inspired performance from their host at the Gtech meant they had to wait another day.
Dango Ouattara broke the deadlock five minutes in, while Kevin Schade scored from Mikkel Damsgaard's assist on the stroke of halftime to double the advantage for Keith Andrews' charge before Milos Kerkez halved the deficit deep into added time with his first Liverpool goal.
Igor Thiago beat Giorgio Mamardashvilli from the spot after Virgil van Dijk was penalized for a foul on Ouattara to restore their two-goal cushion on the hour mark, while Mohamed Salah scored the final goal of the game in added time.
Liverpool have now lost four consecutive league games for the first time since February 2021, while this also equals the total amount of losses they had in the league last season.
Eberechi Eze off the mark for Arsenal in Palace reunion
Eberechi Eze scored his first Premier League goal for Arsenal as the leaders overcame a stubborn Palace to move further clear on the standings on a weekend where all of the main rivals fell flat.

After watching Liverpool and Chelsea stumble on Saturday, Mikel Arteta knew a response would be crucial for their ambition, and even though they never truly got into their stride, they did just enough for maximum points.
The moment of the game came six minutes before the interval. Declan Rice whipped in a dangerous free-kick into the path of Gabriel, whose attempted header was helped into the path of Eze to volley home a spectacular.
The Gunners had the chance to double their lead in the second half, but Gabriel's header came off the crossbar as it finished 1-0, with the host extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 11.
Spurs win reshape Thomas Frank's narrative
Tottenham Hotspur continue their stunning away from in the league with a rampant 3-0 win at Everton, becoming the first visiting team to beat David Moyes' team in their new Hill Dickinson stadium.

Spurs, who had won just one of their last five games heading into Sunday's match, had not beaten Everton away since a 6-2 win at Goodison Park in December 2018, got inspiration from an unusual source this time.
Dutch center back Micky Van de Ven scored two first-half goals via corner kicks to give them a two-goal cushion before substitute Pape Sarr added a third in the penultimate minute of the second half.
The was a mood swinger for Spurs fans as they climb up the Premier League table, a result that not only relieved the pressure on Thomas Frank but also gives their season a refined look.
Villa loss throw City back into the shadow of old glory
After opening up an impressive run of form with an unbeaten record in nine games, seven wins, fans of Manchester City were starting to believe their team was slowly returning to its best form, but Sunday's defeat at Villa Park is another setback.

Matty Cash's 19th-minute strike was all Unai Emery's charge needed to halt the impressive run, as they continue to uphold theirs with a fourth consecutive league win on the back of their poorest start to a Premier League season.
Manchester City are now winless in their last four visits to Villa Park, losing each of the last three. They also miss the chance to capitalize on Liverpool's loss and slip further behind Arsenal with their third loss so far.
Newcastle extend delight with Fulham win
Although the season started on a poor note and continues to have its glitches, Newcastle United are starting to see the good days following their win over Fulham on Saturday in the Premier League.

Bruno Guimaraes's late winner sealed the deal after Sasa Lukic had canceled out Jacob Murphy's first-half opener, which came off a Calvin Bassey error in the opening 20 minutes.
It was evenly contested as Fulham showed why they had won their previous two meetings with The Magpies, but having lost each of their last three games in the build-up to the clash, the odds were stacked against Marco Silva's men.
Eddie Howe's Newcastle have now won four of their last five games, winning as many league points (6) in three games, as they had in their six games before this run.
Bournemouth brings Sean Dyche down to earth
First-half goals from Marcus Tavernier and Eli Junior Kroupi gave Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth another impressive win over Nottingham Forest, who suffered their first defeat under new manager Sean Dyche.

Appointed right after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou last week, the Englishman went on to win his first game as Forest beat FC Porto 2-0 in the Europa League thanks to penalties from Morgan Gibbs-White and Igor Jesus.
However, back in the league, the former Burnley manager was taught harsh lessons by Bournemouth, who scored two avoidable goals to capitalize on the visitors' poor form.
Burnley killed Wolves' false hopes at the Molineux
Lyle Foster came off the bench to score an injury-time winner for Burnley as they beat Wolves 3-2 at Molineux for their first away points and continue to pull clear of the relegation zone.
The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the first half hour thanks to a brace from Zian Flemming, but the hosts battled back to level before halftime courtesy of goals from Strand Larsen and Marshall Munetsi.

Forster, introduced for the final 13 minutes was played behind by fellow substitute Hannibal Mejbri in the fifth minute of added time, and the South African guided his effort past Sam Johnston to silence the home support.
Premier League standings update
Arsenal move four points clear at the top of the standings with Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sunderland following then in order, while Manchester City, level on points with sixth-place United, completes the top five.
Liverpool and Chelsea drop to seventh and ninth, respectively, with Aston Villa moving up between them, while Crystal Palace completes the top half.
All newcomers move further clear of the drop zone, but Fulham continues to be near danger owing to their poor run, while it is the trio of Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, and Wolves who remain in the relegation zone.
