Nico Paz: The gem Real Madrid can not play but hate to lose

Nico Paz is at the center of this summer’s most intricate transfer saga as the talented Argentine playmaker whose standout performances for Italian side Como have sparked a complex standoff between his current employers and his parent club, Real Madrid.

Nico Paz joined Como in a permanent deal in 2024, but Real Madrid retain the buy back clause until 2027, and are looking to cash in this summer, but the Italian club is offering resistance.

While they recognize they have an absolute gem on their hands, Madrid's handling of the 21-year-old prodigy suggests a desire to squeeze every possible euro out of a rapidly appreciating asset, even if it risks complicating the player’s career progression.

The immediate issue stalling negotiations in northern Italy is the rigid stance taken by the hierarchy at Como, who are interested in taking the player on another loan move, but aren't giving up now that Los Blancos wants a permanent sale.

Under the stewardship of Cesc Fàbregas, the ambitious Italian club has enjoyed a meteoric rise, culminating in an historic qualification for the upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign.

Yet, despite their newfound European status and substantial financial backing, Como’s management has drawn a firm line in the sand regarding Real Madrid's latest fiscal demands.

The position outlined from the Stadio Sinigaglia is entirely non-negotiable: there is absolutely no willingness on Como's part to buy back the Argentine talent under a convoluted financial framework designed solely to benefit the Spanish giants.

Como believes they have provided the perfect platform for Paz to blossom into a senior international, and they refuse to be treated as a mere developmental outpost to be financially exploited by Madrid.

The Jose Mourinho Factor and Madrid's Financial Demands

To understand how this standoff reached its current impasse, one must look toward the dramatic structural changes unfolding at the Santiago Bernabéu, where the appointment of José Mourinho has completely altered the club's immediate transfer strategy.

The Special One is a manager notoriously focused on instant success, prioritizing established world-class players over youth development, which also coincides with the club's current reality after back-to-back seasons without a major trophy.

Sources close to the Portuguese tactician have confirmed that while Mourinho highly rates the technical ability of the 2004-born midfielder, he simply cannot guarantee Paz the regular first-team minutes the youngster requires.

Respecting the player's explicit desire for a consistent challenge, Mourinho has sanctioned his departure, but only on the strict condition that Real Madrid receives a substantial, immediate financial return.

The condition from Madrid is that if Como wants to keep Nico Paz, they must purchase him outright in a traditional, high-value transfer. No chance of another rolling extensions, or short-term compromises like those utilized over the past year.

Having seen Paz’s market valuation skyrocket to an estimated €80 million following a stellar campaign in Italy, Real Madrid’s leadership is determined to either secure a massive immediate windfall or maintain absolute legal and financial ownership over his long-term future.

Nico Paz: By The Numbers

It is easy to see why both clubs are fighting so fiercely over the young midfielder's registration. Paz's statistical output during the 2025/26 campaign stands as a testament to his elite creative capabilities.

Thrust into the demanding, tactically rigorous environment of Serie A, the youngster established himself as one of the most prolific under-21 playmakers in world football, hence his World Cup selection by Argentina.

Last season, Nico Paz scored 13 goals and set up seven others in 40 games across all competitions for Como. It is this rare blend of domestic consistency and international pedigree that makes Real Madrid so reluctant to let him go cheaply, driving their desire to implement hefty buy-back clauses or retain a 50% sell-on fee in any permanent negotiation.

Other Clubs interested in Nico Paz

Real Madrid's hardline stance is heavily driven by widespread continental interest, with Arsenal extensively scouting Nico Paz as a long-term competitor for their captain and former Madridista, Martin Ødegaard.

High-profile clubs in Spain and Germany have also enquired, recognizing the rare availability of such an elite midfield talent.

However, the Argentine prodigy has complicated Real Madrid’s financial plans.

Well aware that returning to Spain would mean warming the bench behind marquee summer signings, Paz has explicitly informed executives of his desire to remain with Como.

The prospect of guaranteed first-team football under Cesc Fàbregas, coupled with historic Champions League football, is far more appealing than a rotational role in Madrid.

Como can afford to reject Real Madrid's convoluted financial buy-back demands because they are well aware of the World Cup star's intention to remain with them and not move elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s buy-back option for this specific summer window is set to expire on June 30, and they have already conceded they will not activate it due to Mourinho's preference for a different kind of players.

While Los Blancos will still retain a €10 million buy-back option until June 30, 2027, their immediate leverage to force Como into an unfavorable, expensive deal this summer has effectively vanished.

For now, the Italian club remains resolute, confident that they can retain their prized asset on their own terms while Real Madrid is left scrambling to find a way to maximize profit from a gem they cannot afford to play, yet desperately hates to lose.
