Mbappé, Estevao, Liverpool, and 10 standout statistics from the UCL Round 5

Champions League Matchday Five delivered seismic shocks and established new records across Europe. The hunters became the prey, and the known victims became the predators.

While Arsenal solidified their perfect season start by beating Bayern Munich, giants like Liverpool and Barcelona faced historic defeats, including scoring droughts and their worst home loss streaks in decades.

The drama was unprecedented, marking the nights as ones for the record books.

10 standout statistics from the UCL Round 5

1. Hansi Flick's 36-game scoring run ended

For the first time in his managerial career, Hansi Flick saw his side fail to find the back of the net in a Champions League game, ending a 36-game scoring run for the German in the competition.

His Barcelona side was far from their best against a dominant Chelsea side, who won the much-anticipated meeting by three goals to nothing, with Barcelona never truly in the contest.

It was an uncharacteristic performance from the Barcelona team as they were bullied from start to finish, and were not helped by the red card to their captain, Ronald Araujo, just before the end of the first half.

Hansi Flick had beaten Chelsea in the two previous times he had faced them while serving as the manager of Bayern Munich, but on Tuesday night, he had no response for Enzo Maresca, as second-half goals from Estevao and Liam Delap added to Jules Koundé's own goal to secure a 3-0 win for the host in London.

2. Barcelona's 54-game scoring run ended

Additionally, Barcelona failed to score in a game for the first time since a 1-0 loss to Leganes on 15 December 2024, ending a 54-game scoring run across all competitions.

Ferran Torres missed a glorious chance earlier in the game with the goal at his mercy and goalkeeper in helpless after he was played in by Lamine Yamal, but the Spaniard placed his shot just wide of the goal.

Their first shot on target came after the half hour, a tame effort from Lamine Yamal that failed to really threaten Sanchez, while their other effort came much later in the game, as substitute Raphinha forced a smart save off the Spaniard.

While it was a disappointing performance, especially in attack, the team can take solace in the fact that their team on the night was not that competitive, yet it only highlights the strength of the Premier League teams, because a less competitive Barcelona XI defeated Athletic Club in LaLiga a few days back.

3. Liverpool equaled 96-year unwanted home record

Liverpool's recent spate of defeats has yielded an unwelcome record at Anfield this season as the club has now lost three home games by a margin of three or more goals in all competitions in the current campaign.

Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, and PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, teams you'd expect them to blow away, have been responsible for this rude awakening.

This staggering figure matches their worst-ever performance in a single season at Anfield, last seen nearly a century ago, 96 years ago in 1929-30.

Remarkably, it equals the total number of such heavy home defeats suffered across all 238 home fixtures under former manager Jürgen Klopp.

4. Barcelona's 24-game UCL scoring run ended

Barcelona, again, had scored in 24 straight Champions League games after the 1-0 loss at Shakhtar Donesk two years ago in November 2023, but the run was ended at Chelsea.

Xabi was the manager in charge at the time, and the Spanish club followed it up with six games scored in before the appointment of Hansi Flick, who extended it by 18 more games.

For a side known for their wealth of talent in attack, they could not break down a Chelsea side, who picked up just their second clean sheet in this season's Champions League, and extended their clean sheet run to three games.

The Blaugrana faces a daunting task to qualify for the round of 16 without taking part in the playoffs with three games to spare, having recorded just seven points from their opening five games.

5. Estevao joins Mbappé and Haaland in elite club

Estêvão joined the duo of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland in a Champions League club by becoming only the third teenager to score in his first three starts.

Kylian Mbappé was the first to achieve this at 18 years and 113 days while playing for AS Monaco in 2017. While Haaland followed a few years later in 2019 at 19 years and 107 days while on the books of Austrian side RB Salzburg.

Estêvão, 18 years and 215 days, representing Chelsea, completed the trio after netting the club's second in a 3-0 win over Barcelona on Tuesday night, adding to strikes against Ajax and Qarabag to secure the feat.

6. Arsenal shuts down Harry Kane

For the first time in his career, Harry Kane played a full 90 minutes against Arsenal without registering a single shot, as he was completely marshalled by the Arsenal backline, which featured two non-regulars.

Prior to this game, Kane, who had faced Arsenal 21 times across all competitions, netting 15 goals, was the most anticipated player in the game, although Arsenal had found a way to keep him at bay in recent meetings, with his only two goals in four games coming from the spot.

Nevertheless, his average shot count in previous 90-minute fixtures against the Gunners was dramatically higher, but his recent anomaly underscores Arsenal's successful defensive strategy, which forced and nullified his threat in the final third.

7. Liverpool unlock 72-year low

Liverpool's shocking 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League cemented an unwanted record; their third consecutive game the Reds have lost by a margin of three or more goals.

This streak of disastrous defeats is the first time the club has suffered such a run since 72 years ago in December 1953.

The three most recent losses came against Manchester City, a 3-0 defeat against their bitter rivals, who are the only formidable opponents in this run.

That was followed by an identical 3-0 home to a relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, who made it back-to-back in Anfield for the first time in the 21st century

PSV Eindhoven capitalized on the see slips to stage a stunning upset, beating the Premier League champions 4-1 at Anfield to take the Reds to nine defeats in 12 games, the worst sequence for the club since the same 1953-54 season, highlighting a crisis of historic proportions for manager Arne Slot.

8. Kylian Mbappé bagged four to close UCL landmarks

Kylian Mbappé delivered a stunning four-goal performance to help Real Madrid beat a stubborn Olympiacos in Piraeus, achieving multiple major milestones in Champions League history.

His four-goal haul made him the first Frenchman to net four times in a Champions League game since Olivier Giroud, who scored four for Chelsea in their 4-0 win against Sevilla in December 2020.

Furthermore, Mbappé's first-half treble, scored in just six minutes and 42 seconds, is now the second-fastest hat-trick in the competition's history.

He fell just short of the record held by Mohamed Salah, who registered his hat-trick for Liverpool against Rangers in October 2022 in a blistering six minutes and 12 seconds.

It is also his fourth hat-trick on away ground the most of any player in Champions League history, while he is now a hat-trick away from leveling both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for most in a single season, three.

9. PSV breach Anfield with historic 4+ goal rout

PSV Eindhoven triumphed with a remarkable scoreline, becoming only the second visiting team in history to net four or more goals at the iconic Anfield Stadium in European competition.

The memorable result also marked a significant milestone for PSV, ending a long 17-year drought for a victory on English soil. Their previous success in England was against Tottenham Hotspur back in 2008.

Ivan Perisic and Guus Til have them leading 2-1 before substitute, Couhaib Driouech added two late goals to pile more misery on Arne Slot's charge.

10. Arsenal matches club record with perfect start

Arsenal has achieved a significant milestone in their UEFA Champions League already this season, winning their first five matches of the campaign.

This perfect run marks the first time the club has accomplished this feat since the 2005-06 season, which notably culminated in their only appearance in the competition's final.

Currently, the Gunners stand as the only team with a 100% winning record in the Champions League, beating Athletic Club, Olympiacos, Atlético Madrid, Slavia Prague, and Bayern Munich.
