Amidst the highs and lows, here's our selection on this edition of the best in each of the top five leagues during the weekend.
Standout Performers in Europe Top 5 Leaguea
English Premier League: Matheus Cunha of Wolves
Matheus Cunha heap more misery on relegated Leicester City by reaching a new height of his own, scoring his 15th Premier League goal of the season to equal the record for most by a Brazilian in a single campaign.
He also added two assists for the other goals in the 3-0 win in the Molineux, achieving three-goal involvement in a single Premier League game for the second time this season, after his two goals and an assist performance against Fulham in November.
He opened the scoring for the host three minutes after the half hour, finishing off a move he started, by stabbing home from close range a Rayan Ait-Nouri cutback from close range to score his 31st goal in the shirt of Wolves.
The visitors held off the pressure to ensure Cunha's lone goal is the difference at the halftime break, but that was soon doubled four minutes before the hour mark, with the Brazilian turning provider.
The Manchester United target spotted the run of Jorgen Strand Larsen and threaded a through pass for the striker, who took it in its stride to fire past the goalkeeper for his 13th Premier League goal of the campaign.
A 3-0 scoreline was sealed five minutes to the end of normal time as Wolves countered after a Leicester attack broke down. The ball found Cunha, who patiently held off his marker before sending across the ball to Rodrigo Gomes for a simple finish.
A resounding victory for Vitor Pereira's charge, who continues to climb up the table, moving two places up the standing to 13th, above Spurs and Manchester United, with four games to spare.
Outgoing Cunha will have the chance to surpass the record he tied in the coming days, with a chance to also surpass his goal contribution of last season in the shirt of Wolves with just one more to equal the total of 22.
For the past gameweek, the Brazilian stood tall as the best amongst the rest in the most prophesied league in the world.
Spanish LaLiga: Juan Hernandez of Real Betis
Looks like only good can happen to Real Betis these days as they make it eight wins in their last ten LaLiga games in an emphatic fashion with a 5-1 home win over a sorry Real Valladolid, who bids farewell to the Spanish topflight as a result.
At the heart of the big win is their Colombian striker Juan Hernandez, who arrived in the winter transfer window after excelling in his two-and-a-half-year stint at MLS side Columbus Crew.
Hernandez, who had scored two Betis goals ahead of kickoff has been very decisive, with those coming in form of winners against Leganes and Sevilla, had a hand in two of the five goals, scoring one and assisting another.
He scored the game-winning goal four minutes after the hour mark, heading home a cross from Marc Bartra to restore the host's lead after Jesus Rodriguez's 17th minute opener had been canceled out by Chuki four minutes before the interval.
He then registered his first assist for the club six minutes to the end of normal time to stretch the host's advantage, setting up Romain Perraud for their fourth of the game, between an Isco and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli goals to secure a 5-1 victory.
It is their biggest LaLiga win in this fixture while it also equals the biggest for any side in the same fixture, with Real Valladolid winning by the same scoreline in October 1960.
Juan Hernandez topples everyone on a gameweek that kick-started in mid-week, with Goalkeepers stealing most of the deadlines with a total eight clean sheets in the round.
Italian Serie A: Scott McTominay of Napoli
After watching their closest rival for the Scudetto beaten at home by AS Roma, Napoli kicked hosted Torino later on Sunday and were able to secure maximum points, which sends them three points clear on the summit.
At the heart of the decisive win is their man on form Scott McTominay, who bagged a brace to take his goal scoring run to five in three.
The former Manchester United man, who bagged a brace in a 3-0 win over Empoli in their last home game opened the scoring less than seven minutes after kickoff in the Maradona.
Napoli attacked down the right, and the ball was eventually played to Zambo-Anguissa, who sent a low cross into the center of the box, where McTominay beat his marker and fire home a one-time shot from close range.
It was the midfielder's tenth League goal of the season, reaching double figures for the first time in a league campaign while also being his 11th overall, overtaking his personal best scoring season of ten, set with Manchester United last campaign.
McTominay helped the host established a cushion four minutes before the interval from almost a similar sequence of play. This time, it was Politano who sent in the cross and the midfielder managed to beat his marker again, to complete his brace.
The goals sealed a important win and McTominay extended his goalscoring form to five in three, eleven in the Serie A, and 12 across all competitions for his new club Napoli.
With favourable run of games lined up for the 2022-23 winners, Antonio Conte will hope to see them off and win the Scudetto with a third different club. McTominay will be vital in achieving that and the Italian will hope the midfielder never stop firing.
For the weekend, 28-year-old McTominay is our nominee as the best player in the Serie A during the weekend, and the fans of Napoli will not forget his performance in the win over Torino, all week long.
German Bundesliga: Shuto Machino of Hosten Kiel
Not many teams has been involved in more thrillers than Hostein Kiel in the Bundesliga this season, and the newcomers were at it again during the weekend as they continue to defy the odds of relegation.
They defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 4-3, with Japanese attacker Shuto Machino scoring two of the goals between the other five in the 15th and 90+1st minute, underscoring his vital influence on the outcome of the match.
The 25-year-old broke the deadlock, heading into the bottom corner from a John Tolkin corner for his ninth league goal of the campaign, scoring in back-to-back Bundesliga games for the first time since September.
The goals started flowing in with Alexander Bernhardsson doubling the advantage eight minutes later, and Tomas Cvancara and Alessane Plea both scored nine minutes apart starting from the stroke of the hour mark to draw the visitors level.
Armin Gigovic scored to put Kiel back in front but the lead lasted another 10 minutes before French striker Franck Honorat scored to even the score for the second time in the match.
With time running out, the desperate host were awarded a corner and Gladbach could not convincingly clear their lines. The ball was launched back into the danger zone and Machino was at the right place to connect and fire home a left footed shot into the bottom corner to win it in the first minute of nine added time.
The Japanese international delivered Kiel's fifth League win of the season, one that takes them away from the bottom of the table to a place up, and keeps their hopes of at least securing a relegation playoff spot—they now trail Heindenheim by three points with three games to go.
With 11 goals this season, Machino has now scored more than double his total for Kiel in the Bundesliga 2 last season, and he'll hope to continue the good run of form to help the club navigate their way out of the relegation zone.
French Ligue 1: Marcin Bulka of OGC Nice
PSG was threatening the record for most consecutive games without a defeat in a single Ligue 1 season but finally bite more than they can chew at home to OGC Nice during the weekend, and it was Polish goalkeeper Marcin Bulka whose outstanding performance denied Les Parisiens on the night.
Luis Enrique's charge, already crowned champions after a 1-0 win over Angers in round 28, featured their best as they look to head into their UEFA Champions League semi-finals first-leg meeting with Arsenal on Tuesday night in good shape.
Unbeaten in 30 games, they were also closing in on the all-time record of 32 set by Nantes in the 1994-95 season, but Bulka ensured they hit the end of the road to achieving that.
Bulka was beaten once, a sensational half volley strike from Fabian Ruiz to restore parity four minutes before the half-time break, fter Morgan Sanson had given the visitors the lead six minutes earlier.
Bulka made a total of 12 saves against his former club, the most by a Nice goalkeeper in a Ligue 1 game since at least 2006-07 campaign.
Second half goals from Morgan Sanson and Youssouf Ndayishimiye ensured the end to PSG's 30 game unbeaten run, while the three points also helped Nice stay on course, albeit they dropped a place on goal difference as Lyon scored one more goal better during the gameweek.
Bulka, although didn't come out with a clean sheet to add to his six so far in the Ligue 1 season but he still managed to standout as the best, not just amongst his counterparts between the sticks but overall, in the French topflight in round 31.
Ultimate Player of the Weekend
Matheus Cunha is the ultimate player of the weekend, beating off competition from Marcin Bulka and Scott McTominay of Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively.
The 25-year-old is the only player to clock a direct three-goal contributions during the weekend and deservedly takes the crown on this week's edition.
