Isak, Athletic, Liverpool, and 10 Others Who Found Themselves on the Wrong Side of History This Weekend

The latest actions in top European leagues continue to defy the odds, with Premier League champions Liverpool plummeting into a historic slump in a humbling 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, which marked their biggest Anfield loss in the Premier League era, plunging them to 11th place.

Adding to their misery, record signing Alexander Isak clocked an unwanted first, losing all four of his initial league starts. He is joined by Rodrygo Goes as individuals with forgettable weekends in our compiled lists of top flops.

Across the continent, Real Madrid, Man City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Inter also failed to impress. Meanwhile, AS Monaco couldn't make Paul Pogba's return a night to remember as they matched a 50-year club low.

10 Others Who Found Themselves on the Wrong Side of History This Weekend

1. Alexander Isak clocks an unwanted low

British record signing Alexander Isak has become the first player in the history of Liverpool to end up on the losing side in their first four Premier League starts for the club.

The £150 million summer signing from Newcastle United has so far struggled to hit form, and remains without a goal in five league games, and this is the only time he has been on the winning team, which was in a cameo against Everton.

Alexander Isak, who fought his former employer to seal the move to Anfield in the summer, has lost all four Liverpool starts as the Reds fell to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United, and now Nottingham Forest.

With him, Liverpool have already lost more Premier League home games than they did in the entirety of last season, and his misery keeps getting deeper, with just one goal, against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, to his name in nine Liverpool games.

2. Liverpool has lost the way of champions

It was an unfortunate evening for Arne Slot and his team, as they were completely humbled by Nottingham Forest at Anfield, with a 3-0 scoreline that equals their biggest home loss in Premier League history.

The hope that was restored after the victories over Aston Villa and Real Madrid at the start of November has now been washed off the faces of the Anfield faithful following back-to-back losses, especially their latest one.

Sean Dyche's side secured the club's first back-to-back league games in Anfield since 1963, while The Reds have now lost back-to-back by a margin of three goals for the first time in the Premier League era, and first since 1965.

Arne Slot's charge also became the fourth side to start a season as defending champions in the Premier League with six or more defeats in their first 12 games, after Blackburn Rovers in 1995-96 (6), Chelsea in 2015-16 (7), and Leicester City in 2016-17 (6).

They drop to 11th on the Premier League standings and could end the gameweek in 12th if their city rivals, Everton, beat Manchester United at the new Hill Dickinson stadium on Monday night.

3. Athletic Club the worst LaLiga team when they visit Barça

It's been more than 40 years since the Basque club kept a clean sheet at Barcelona in the league, but that isn't their only cause of concern, because they've not lost 21 of 22 games away to the champions, without winning one.

Hansi Flick's starting XI for their historic return to the Camp Nou showed the club could also become very vulnerable, with Gerrard Martin starting as a center back alongside Pau Cubarsi, while Eric Garcia partnered Fermin Lopez in midfield.

However, all rising nerves were swiftly brushed aside straight from the onset, with Robert Lewandowski opening the scoring inside the opening four minutes to send them on their way to a 4-0 defeat in a completely dominant display.

For a team considered one of the top in Spain, and even playing Champions League football, Athletic Club left a lot to be desired, and Ernesto Valverde has to get his team to do better, especially in the final third, where only Real Oviedo has a worse shot conversion rate.

4. Eddie Howe's 100th anniversary best time to topple Pep

After 16 failed attempts, Eddie Howe finally secured his first-ever Premier League win over Pep Guardiola as Newcastle United earned a hard-fought win over Manchester City in an epic battle at Saint James' Park.

Pep Guardiola had won 14 and drawn one of their meetings before Sunday night, a run that began in 2016, when Howe was still in charge at Bournemouth.

However, he finally had his first win, and in extraordinary fashion, against a Manchester City side, who appeared to be back on form after winning four consecutive games heading into the fixture, which included a 3-0 demolition of Liverpool.

Both teams had plenty of chances to break the deadlock in the first half, but neither was able to capitalize until Harvey Barnes scored from Bruno Guimaraes' through pass three minutes after the hour mark.

The goal sparked a frantic seven-minute span in the game as Ruben Dias restored parity for the visitors five minutes later, only for the host to controversially retake the lead through their English winger.

Newcastle United held on for a 2-1 victory, ending a run of 12 winless against the Cityzens, since January 2019, when Matt Ritchie's late penalty sealed a 2-1 comeback win for Rafa Benitez's team.

Barnes, who bagged a brace in the match, became the first Newcastle United player to do so in a Premier League game against Manchester City in 40 meetings, since Alan Shearer in November 2003.

5. Tottenham Hotspur too poor for North London derby

Isak, Athletic, Liverpool, and 10 Others Who Found Themselves on the Wrong Side of History This Weekend

For the first time since the 1980s, Arsenal have won four consecutive North London derby matches in the Premier League after humbling their noisy neighbors in the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.

It was a tense buildup to the game that has produced a lot of highlights, especially for the host in recent meetings, having dominated the fixture with more assurance, and three straight wins in their previous head to head set them on course of history.

Spurs had been unbeaten away from home in the Premier League this season, and Thomas Frank's charge stood alone on that metric, before an unyielding Arsenal made them realize that maybe they hadn't faced a worthy opponent.

Eberechi Eze, who had a history with Spurs during the summer transfer window, scored a hat-trick to become the first player to do so in the North London derby in the Premier League era, while Leandro Trossard scored the opener, with Richarlison grabbing what was a consolation in a 4-1 scoreline.

Arsenal extended their lead to six points on the Premier League summit, making up for their disappointing draw after Sunderland's late equalizer at the Stadium of Light before the international break.

6. Leaky Monaco refreshes a 50-year-old hurtful memory

For the second game in a row, AS Monaco have conceded four goals in Ligue 1, this is the first time the club have recorded such poor defensive performance since over 50 years ago in September 1975.

After a humiliating 4-1 home loss to RC Lens before the international break, Monaco received positive news with Paul Pogba's planned debut ahead of the trip to Rennes, but the former France international could do nothing as the game was lost before his introduction in the 85th minute.

The host scored all four goals before substitute Mika Biereth scored a late consolation for Monaco, who are now 10 points behind league leaders PSG, and currently occupy the 8th position.

7. Derby loss heightens Inter's failure in top fixtures

Inter go from first to fourth in the Serie A after falling at the hands of their bitter rivals Milan in the derby, another highlight of their dip in form against fellow top teams since their title-winning campaign in 2023-24.

Since the Nerazzurri's win over AC Milan in April 2024, the decisive match that sealed the Scudetto that year, Inter have faced the trio of Milan, Juventus, and Napoli 12 times across all competitions without a single victory.

Sunday's defeat is their seventh during these period, and the sixth consecutive derby matches where they've failed to beat Milan, four defeats, having won six straight derby matches before the start of this run.

Very much the better side, but Mike Maignan was not to be beaten, and even denied Hakan Calhanoglu from the spot after Christian Pulisic had given Milan the lead, the seventh spot kick the Nerazzurri have failed to convert since March 2023.

This poor run against top teams didn't start with Cristian Chivu, but the Romanian is aware of the consequences if he doesn't turn things around anytime soon.

8. Rodrygo ties goalless record as exit reports intensify

Isak, Athletic, Liverpool, and 10 Others Who Found Themselves on the Wrong Side of History This Weekend

After another shambolic outing at Elche, Rodrygo Goes has now failed to score in 29 Real Madrid games, becoming only the third attacker to be shut out in as many games in the club's history after Rafa Marañón 29) and Mariano Díaz 30.

The Brazilian has failed to score since his fourth-minute strike in a 2-1 Champions League win over Atlético Madrid back in March, while his last league goal came more than 10 months ago against Las Palmas in January.

Rodrygo, who has been linked with a move away from Real Madrid after losing his spot under Xabi Alonso is making no efforts to convince the manager, and could be exiting the club as early as January in quest for more game time ahead of the World Cup.

9. LaLiga painted red as six sent off

Isak, Athletic, Liverpool, and 10 Others Who Found Themselves on the Wrong Side of History This Weekend

There were six red cards in the LaLiga during the weekend, the most in a single gameweek in the Spanish topflight since gameweek two of the 2022-23 season, with eight.

Athletic Club midfielder Oihan Sancet was the first to be sent for an early shower following his foul on Fermin Lopez in the 4-0 loss to Barcelona on historic Camp Nou return after more than two years.

Osasuna's Inigo Arguibide followed, lasting just 16 minutes in the pitch after coming on as a 71st minute substitute. Ilyas Chaira and Pathe Ciss got one apiece for Real Oviedo and Rayo Vallecano, respectively, in the first kickoff on Sunday.

Later in the day, Antony received a late red card in Real Betis' draw with Girona, while another late dismissal occurred in Real Madrid's draw, as Elche's Victor Chust picked up a second booking to complete the set.

With one more fixture still to go in the gameweek as Sevilla visit Espanyol on Monday night, caution will be prescribed by managers, as a man disadvantage could easily change the course of games, and everyone wants to be on the good side of these decisions.

10. Wolves achieve second-worst start in Premier League history

Wolves make it five consecutive Premier League losses for the second time in the ongoing season after only 12 games, where they have only earned two points, the second fewest in history after Sheffield United in 2020-21.

It's not looking good for Wolves, and the early indication is that their eight-year top-flight run could be coming to an end if things do not turn around any time soon.
