Mission Xclusive | How WAFCON Success Earn World Best Status For Super Falcons

Super Falcons proved their position as the best team on the African continent by accomplishing Mission X, making them the only nation in history with double digits of continental titles in women's football.

Anyone can say they’re on a mission to win, but it takes real winners to do it after proclaiming it. The Falcons knew the hurdles would be higher by making their intentions public, but it didn’t matter, because they are the Superior Super Falcons.

It was always coming, just like in years past. But this time, the now ten-time African champions had to walk the talk, and they proved they've got the legs for a journey.

Never in the history of the competition has any team gone two goals up in a final and not won. Aside from the domineering Nigeria, the only other nations to score twice in a final are South Africa and Equatorial Guinea.

It is rare to score twice in a final, and as disappointing as the result was for Morocco, the fact that they breached a team that had not conceded from open play until that moment may offer a faint consolation.

When Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy gave Morocco a two-goal lead just after the first quarter, not many would have thought they'd end up on the losing side. But against the best team on the continent, nothing is impossible.

Despite their shambolic first half, it was clear the game was there to be won, if only they showed more desire. Whatever Justin Magudu told the ladies at halftime, it was the awakening they needed.

Seventeen months ago, Nigeria’s men's team took a one-goal lead into the break in the African Cup of Nations final against host Ivory Coast—but disaster struck, and they ended up losing both their heads and the match.

The fear of adding another final defeat to a wound many would rather forget was real, but the Super Falcons said "not today." They went on to complete a remontada, preserving their perfect final record.

Awarded a penalty after a VAR review just past the hour mark, Esther Okoronkwo stepped up to take it, even though she wasn’t the designated penalty taker. The pressure was immense, but she proved to be the coldest body in the stadium.

The 27-year-old calmly slotted the ball home, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Seven minutes later, she turned provider, laying it on a plate for Folashade Ijamilusi to tap in from close range and draw the nine-time champions level.

Nigeria’s grueling route to the final had made them the bookies’ favorites, and after overcoming the kind of adversity no team wants in a final, they finally took the lead on the night.

However, before that, the host had been awarded a penalty, which was overturned following a VAR check. Minutes later, Esther delivered a sublime free-kick into the box, where substitute Jennifer Echegini fired home first time, sending Nigerian fans in Rabat into a frenzy.

The goal, scored just two minutes before the end of normal time, sealed the win and the title, and the referee eventually brought the curtain down on the tournament in the 96th minute.

6 Facts You May Not Know About Nigeria’s WAFCON Glory

Mission Xclusive | How WAFCON Success Earn World Best Status For Super Falcons:

1. Nigeria becomes the first nation ever to win double-digit continental titles in women's football, overtaking China and the United States.

2. They are also the first to come from two goals down to win a WAFCON final match, with Morocco becoming the only nation to lose after leading by two.

3. Morocco becomes just the second team to score twice in a WAFCON final and still lose — after Equatorial Guinea in 2010, also to Nigeria.

4. Nigeria remains the only country in history to reach ten continental finals and not lose any.

5. Every nation other than Nigeria to reach back-to-back Women’s AFCON finals, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and Morocco, has lost the second final to Nigeria. Cameroon lost its first game to Nigeria.

6. Morocco becomes only the second team in history to lose back-to-back Women’s AFCON finals, following Cameroon in 2014 and 2016.

Is Super Falcons the Best Women’s Team in the World?

Well, if continental dominance is the yardstick, then yes—with ten Women’s AFCON titles, Nigeria stands tallest. So perhaps, they are the best in the world using that logic.

While the Super Falcons have yet to conquer the FIFA Women’s World Cup, no nation has ruled its continent like Nigeria has.

China and the United States are joint-second with nine titles each, while Brazil and Germany boast eight apiece. Yet none of them carry Nigeria’s invincible record in finals.

By securing a tenth continental title, a feat no women's national team has achieved, the Super Falcons have once again etched their name into history, not just as champions, but as pioneers of continental dominance.

Their unyielding belief in the final, where they were down by two goals at half time, will continue to inspire generations, reminding them that greatness isn’t claimed but earned, defended, and repeated.

Tinubu Honours Super Falcons with Historic Rewards

Mission Xclusive | How WAFCON Success Earn World Best Status For Super Falcons: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Honors Super Falcons

In a heartwarming gesture that celebrates their excellence and patriotism, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rewarded the Super Falcons for their heroic feats in Morocco.

Each Falcon will receive a three-bedroom apartment, a cash gift of $100,000 (about ₦150 million), and a national honour—Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

The technical crew was not left out either. Every member of the coaching staff will pocket $50,000 (approximately ₦75 million), marking a rare moment of national appreciation for behind-the-scenes heroes.

In addition, the Nigerian Governors Forum has collectively donated ₦360 million to the team, ₦10 million from each of the 36 state governors, a statement of unity in celebrating female excellence.

This action is more than a reward, but also a message. The Super Falcons have not only made Nigeria proud on the pitch, but have also inspired a nation to value resilience, teamwork, and grace under pressure.

Responsible betting is not about fear. It is about structure.
