How Ivan Juric Became the Worst Manager in Premier League History
Lasted less than two months at AS Roma and now responsible for leading Southampton into the drop, Ivan Juric is having a season to forget, but it was he who put himself up for disaster after all.
Ivan Juric has been relieved of his duties as Southampton manager in the wake of the club's relegation on Sunday, following the 3-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur with seven more games to go.
The Croatian leaves having taken charge of 14 Premier League games, losing 12 and winning only one, averaging 0.29 points per game, breaking the record of Terry Connor, 0.31, for the least of any manager to have managed ten or more games in the competition.
Juric also had one win in the Emirates FA Cup, beating Swansea City 3-0 thanks to goals from Kamaldeen Sulemana and a Tyler Dibling brace, securing passage to the round three where they eventually lost out to Championship side Burnley.
12 goals scored an 38 conceded in those 14 Premier League games, Southampton never looked like surviving the drop even after Juric's appointment, and their relegation from the topflight activates the clause that allows the club to sack him.
Southampton part companies with Ivan Juric
A club statement read: "We can confirm that we have today reached an agreement with our Men’s First Team Manager, Ivan Juric, to end his spell at the club. Ivan came to Southampton at a tough time and was tasked with trying to improve a squad in a difficult situation.
Unfortunately, we haven’t seen performances progress the way we had hoped, but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work as they fought against the odds to try and keep us up.
"With relegation to the Championship now confirmed, we believe it is important to give fans, players and staff some clarity on the future as we head into a very important summer.
"The process of finding a new manager to lead us as we look to secure an immediate return to the Premier League has now begun and is being led by Group Technical Director Johannes Spors.
"In the meantime, Simon Rusk has agreed to take charge of the team as Interim Manager for the remaining seven fixtures of this season and will be assisted by Adam Lallana.
"We remain incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our fans. Their continued dedication and passion, despite what has been a very tough season, is remarkable and is appreciated by everyone at the club.
"Despite the challenges that relegation will bring, our goal is to restore a sense of pride for them in their team and club once again."
How Ivan Juric Became The Worst Manager in Premier League History
Juric spent 108 days on the job after replacing Russell Martin at the end of 2024. Russell's final game was a 5-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur, extending their winless run to six, with five defeats.
Narrow EFL Cup loss to Liverpool and a stalemate at Fulham followed under interim boss Simon Rusk, who has now been reappointed to lead the team for the remainder of the season.
At the time of Juric's appointment, Southampton were 20th on the log, a position they've occupied since the end of the Gameweek six, six points and with a goal difference of negative 25.
Missed Chances and Poor Officiating
Having been sacked by AS Roma earlier in the season, he took up the new challenge, kicking off his reign with a home defeat to West Ham United. He would go on to lose his first six league games at the club before securing a 2-1 win away to fellow newcomer Ipswich Town.
It was a game hanging in the balance, with both side having the chance to nick it late on. Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu emerged as the hero, scoring from a rebound three minutes to the end of normal time to secure The Saint's first away win of the season.
The only near positive result from his final eight games would be a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace in the penultimate game before his sacking.
Juric's first three games came against London teams, and maybe then was the time of his winnable fixtures. The loss to West Ham United was rather unfortunate. His team had four big chances but failed to convert any, before the visitors nick it with a Jarrod Bowen's strike just before the hour mark.
Even if Eberechi Eze's winner at Palace was undeniably a thing of real beauty, the host's leveler after a Tyler Dibling's opener, was down to poor officiating from referee Michael Salisbury as Jean-Philippe Mateta visibly pushed Aaron Ramsdale, allowing Trevor Chalobah's header to beat the goalkeeper.
They were far below second best in the clash with Brentford at the turn of the year. The Bees ran out 5-0 winners in the Saint Mary's, giving their host no chance at all with four second half goals.
Nevertheless, Ivan Juric will be disappointed as his side only conceded once in the first half, before their capitulation after the break.
From there, their fate was no longer in their hands. The complains won't be much with their next games/ losses coming against teams like Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
Notwithstanding, they were never without their chances in two of those games. Southampton led against United until the final 10 minutes, before succumbing to an Amad Diallo hat-trick at the end, one of which was caused by an error from Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
Another error one of their errors, this time from Jan Bednarek led to a second for Nottingham Forest in a 3-2 defeat a few days later.
Although the club did not look as though it was prepared to survive the drop right from the start of the season, individual errors were very much responsible for majority of their falls – no side made more errors leading to an opposition goal than Southampton this season.
After their win against Ipswich, tough schedules and losses followed against Bournemouth, Brighton, Chelsea and Liverpool, before a 2-1 home loss to Wolves, which left the former Crotone boss on the brink.
The draw with Crystal Palace only delayed the inevitable and the defeat to Tottenham compounded the woes, activating the clause to sack Ivan Juric as well as confirming their status off the topflight when next season gets underway.
In their remaining seven games, Southampton, under the watch of Simon Rusk, will now battle to not break the record of Derby County as the team with the fewest points in a Premier League season (11 points in 2007-08).
Tough meetings with Manchester City, Aston Villa and Arsenal still to come but they'll fancy their chances against teams likes of West Ham, Everton and relegation bound Leicester City.
With an average of 0.29 points per game, Ivan Juric has set a new record as the worst Premier League manager out of those to have taken charge of ten or more games, adding more to his lows in a season where he was earlier sacked at Roma, lasting less than two months.
Juric took up the Roma job, where Jose Mourinho was sacked and then Danielle de Rossi, the 49-year-old was unable to achieve any turnaround, lasted 43 days on the job and left them 20th in the Europa League and just four points off the drop zone in the Serie A.
After another ordeal at Southampton, where he had signed an 18 month contract but lasted 108 days, taking the time off for the remainder of the season would be nice, so he can have a refreshed mind to rethink where he continues to get it wrong.
Whatever decision he arrives, being the worst Premier League coach to manage 10+ games will follow Ivan Juric for now, while Southampton will fight to avoid setting another low in the competition by avoiding Derby County's fewest points record.
