How Bridge Burning Enzo Fernandez went from hero to villain at Stamford Bridge

It appears Enzo Fernandez has reached the end of his time at Chelsea, following the recent situation between the player's camp and the club, which resulted from his comments during the international break.
On Friday, during his press conference ahead of the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final clash with Port Vale, Head Coach Liam Rosenior confirmed that the club has suspended the Argentine for the games as well as the visit of Manchester City the following weekend.
"I spoke with Enzo. As part of the football club, he won't be available for tomorrow or Manchester City. It's disappointing to speak in that way. As a character and person, I have no bad words. But a line was crossed. We had to make a sanction," said the Chelsea coach.
Enzo Fernandez has spent the international break speaking about the club, and not in the best way, especially since he is one of the leaders in the dressing room, and his statement has not gone down well with the management.
The midfielder criticized the hierarchy, and the project, highlighting the departure of Enzo Maresca while also talking about a potential move elsewhere, issuing a blatant come-and-get-me plea.
His actions since the Champions League elimination at the hands of PSG have undermined the club, and for a player whose behavior towards former Chelsea players, even though improper has earned him love from the fanbase, his actions are the epitome of hypocrisy.
How Enzo Fernandez went from hero to villain
Even though Enzo Fernandez didn't get his time at Chelsea off to a good start, his willingness to join in what was a club record move from Benfica in the winter window of 2022 made him endearing to fans.
He came in as part of the project to build a team of young players, but his reputation as a World Cup winner, coupled with his achievements at River Plate at a very young age made the fans rate him as good business.
His first heated altercation came against one of Chelsea's very own, Mason Mount, who was part of the Champions League-winning team in 2021 before moving to Manchester United 18 months after Enzo's arrival for around £55 million.

After Chelsea's 4-3 win in April 2024, Fernández was captured on camera relentlessly taunting Mount, allegedly branding him a cagón, a stinging Spanish label for a coward, while emphatically thumping the Chelsea crest.
Chelsea supporters widely praised the incident, viewing the Argentine's actions as a display of passion for the club, while further highlighting their disgust with Mason Mount, a player made in Cobham, and who had won with them.
After Manchester United's 2-1 win over Chelsea earlier this season, footage circulated on social media showing Mount and Fernández involved in a physical altercation involving pushing and shoving, requiring teammates to intervene and separate them.
Fernandez also clashed with Noni Madueke, who moved to Arsenal last summer after two years together at Chelsea. The midfielder was seen kicking the winger and shouting at his face when the clubs met at Stamford Bridge in November.
To fans, he was a defender of the club, and alongside his promotion to vice captain, he became one of the few regarded as proper Chelsea, even though he cost them over £100 million and was never one of their products.
But his recent actions have led to the same fans turning on him, while they also regret the actions that made them celebrate him, because in the end, he ended up being the worst of the hypocrites.
Not long ago when things were going well, he was a proud representation but when things fell apart, he made it known that he was just a mercenary, arrived as a marque signing, and deserved a better environment.
Enzo Fernandez's camp not backing down

Just hours after the announcement of Chelsea's decision to suspend Enzo Fernandez, his agent and former PSG midfielder Javier Pastore slammed the club for the decision, while also confirming that they'll explore options in the summer window.
"The punishment is completely unfair - banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team’s most important players.
"Alongside others, of course, he has proven himself this year to be a leader and a key player, the backbone of this Chelsea side. I think it’s far too harsh given Chelsea’s current situation, and there’s no real reason or justification for why he has been banned," said Pastore.
He also confirmed contract renewal talks which started around December, but there has been no agreement, although recent comments from the player are in disagreement with his claims that he (Enzo) has never spoken of another club.
Despite a contract running until 2032, Chelsea’s stance that the midfielder is not for sale is reportedly softening, with the club expected to demand a return on their £100m+ investment.
Potential new clubs/ replacement for Enzo Fernandez

Enzo Fernandez was initially linked with a move to PSG last month but sources close to the European champions have denied the speculation, while the player himself has evidently confessed to Real Madrid as his preferred destination.
While Chelsea boasts depth, the hierarchy is reportedly looking at Valentín Barco, currently flourishing at sister club Strasbourg, as a cost-effective, high potential alternative who fits the BlueCo vision.
With the end of the season approaching and the World Cup to follow, a lot of things could change before the end of the summer transfer window, and if it spells the end of Enzo at Chelsea, he will be remembered as the biggest of hypocrites.
