10 highest-scoring teams in a single AFCON in history

Ivory Coast in 2008 is the highest-scoring team in a single AFCON tournament in history, but some nations have also produced noticeable efforts in their outings at Africa's premier competition.

With the 35th edition of the African Cup of Nations approaching its end in Morocco, the Nigerian team has already sealed its place in national history with 14 tournament goals, but still has the chance to rewrite AFCON history.

From DR Congo's historical triumph in 1974 to the Ivory Coast's compensation in 2008, here are the nine highest-scoring teams in a single AFCON tournament in history.

9 highest-scoring teams in a single AFCON in history

9. DR Congo 1974 - 14 goals

In the year they won their second African Cup of Nations title, playing as Zaire, DR Congo scored seven times in the group stages, against Guinea, Congo, and Mauritania, scoring two, one, and four goals, respectively, to kick off their journey to the company of the highest-scoring teams in a single AFCON tournament in history.

They finished second and progressed to play Egypt in the semi-finals, scoring three goals in a 3-2 victory, then played Zambia in a two-legged final, winning the decisive replay 2-0 after the first ended 2-2.

Late icon Mulumba Ndiaye scored nine goals that year, making him the highest-scoring player in a single AFCON tournament in history, to date.

8.  Morocco 2004 - 14 goals

After winning the title in their first final appearance in 1976, Atlas Lions of Morocco returned to the climax 28 years later in Tunisia, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to the host, but still did enough to rank as one of the highest-scoring teams in a single AFCON tournament in history.

On their way to the final, they scored 13 times in six games, starting with six in the group as they finished in first place, having beaten Nigeria 1-0 in their opening game.

They beat Benin 4-0 and drew one-all with Bafana Bafana in their final group game. They bagged seven in the quarter-final and semi-final, beating Algeria 3-1 after extra time and Mali 4-0 in their penultimate match of the tournament.

7. Cameroon 2008 - 14 goals

Cameroon put up a real show at the 2008 edition and ranked as one of the highest-scoring teams in a single AFCON tournament in history; unfortunately, they couldn't turn it into a silverware as they lost twice to Egypt, who scored one goal better during the tournament.

Indomitable Lions kicked off their campaign in a 4-2 loss to the Pharaohs, but recovered to score eight times in their other two group games, beating Zambia 5-1 and easing to a 3-0 victory over Sudan.

They scored four more in the knockouts, beating Tunisia 3-2 after extra time and laboured to a 1-0 semi-final win over Ghana, but couldn't add to their tally as they suffered a 1-0 loss to Egypt in the final.

6. Cameroon 2021 - 14 goals

Even though it was not enough for the championship, Cameroon put up a show last time they hosted the African Cup of Nations by scoring 14 times, the most of any team in the tournament that year.

They scored two against Burkina Faso, four against Ethiopia, and one against Cape Verde to take their goal tally in the group stages to eight, finishing top with seven out of nine possible points.

They beat Comoros 2-1 in the round of 16, Gambia 2-0 in the quarter-final, before their run ended in a 3-1 penalty shootout loss to Egypt after a goalless 120 minutes.

The goals returned again in the third-place playoff match with Burkina Faso, a 3-3 draw, and they ultimately edged 5-3 in the shootout, and so the Indomitable Lions of that year sealed their place among the highest-scoring teams in a single AFCON tournament in history.

5. Nigeria 2025 - 14 goals

Nigeria's Super Eagles have so far made themselves the real deal and best entertainers at the African Cup of Nations 2025, which came as a surprise following their recent struggles and failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Their AFCON campaign has been sensational, and they remained the only nation to win all their games up until they secured their place in the semi-final, beating Algeria, the only other team to share a perfect record at the stage.

Two vs Tanzania, three vs Tunisia, and another three against Uganda to crown a perfect group run before putting four past Mozambique in the round of 16 and then two against Algeria to surpass their previous best of 12.

Eric Chelle's team now has the chance to make history as the highest-scoring team in a single AFCON tournament in history, with three more games left to play in Morocco, after sealing their place in the star-studded semi-finals.

4. Zambia 1996 - 15 goals

In the year South Africa won their only African Cup of Nations title, Chipolopolo of Zambia stood out for scoring goals, and they almost scored their way to glory before their fire was quenched by Tunisia.

Despite their failure to score on their opening game, a goalless draw with Algeria, Zambia finished the group campaign with nine goals, beating Burkina Faso 5-1 before thrashing Sierra Leone 4-0, with Johnson Bwalya scoring five of the goals.

They shocked Egypt 3-1 in the quarter-finals but couldn't better Tunisia in the semi-finals despite scoring twice, losing 4-2 before earning a 1-0 victory over Ghana to pick up the bronze medal, and bagged 15 goals, making them the highest-scoring team in a single AFCON tournament in history at the time.

3. Egypt 2008 - 15 goals

Egypt had Cameroon on their neck in 2008, but scored a 1-0 win in the final not just to win the title, but also proved the difference for goals scored by the two nations, which were tied at 14 ahead of kickoff.

They scored four in their opening game with the Indomitable Lions, and followed with a 3-0 win over Sudan and a 1-1 draw with Zambia to finish group winners.

2-1 quarter-final victory over Ghana was followed by an even better attacking performance that produced a 4-1 win over the Ivory Coast in the semi-final, before beating Cameroon for the second time in the tournament, thanks to Mohamed Aboutrika's late goal.

2. Egypt 2010 - 15 goals

Egypt delivered another 15-goal outing two years later to retain their crown and extend their achievement as record winners of the African Cup of Nations with a seventh title, their most recent to date.

Seven of the goals came in a perfect group run; a 3-1 victory over Nigeria, a 2-0 victory over Mozambique, and another 2-0 victory over Benin, helped them finish as group winners.

They needed extra time to beat Cameroon 3-1 but had no trouble dispatching Algeria in a 4-0 victory, and went on to claim the title with just one goal in the final, scored five minutes from time by Gedo, against Ghana.

1. Ivory Coast 2008 - 16 goals

Although both Egypt and Cameroon played in the final of the 2008 African Cup of Nations, it was the Elephants of the Ivory Coast that stood out, particularly in terms of attacking prowess.

Despite scoring once in their opening game to beat Nigeria, they scored four and three in subsequent group games against Benin and Mali to complete a perfect group campaign with eight goals.

They beat Guinea 5-0 in the quarter-finals to reach 13 goals, lost 4-1 to Egypt in the semi-final, and scored twice in a 4-2 third-place playoff loss to Ghana to set the record for the highest-scoring team in a single AFCON tournament in history with 16 goals.
