Europe round-up: Premier League misfits thrive as Serie A table gets a makeover

Top battles in Europe's top five leagues over the weekend saw a massive change at the top of the standings at the end of the gameweek, with Roma dropping from first to fourth, and potentially fifth at the end of Monday night.

Arsenal and Chelsea played a thrilling one-all draw in the Premier League London derby, while Real Madrid's extended poor run allowed Barcelona to assume top spot in Spain.

In Germany, Bayern Munich pulls clear of chasers, while the unusual continues to happen in Ligue 1, with RC Lens now standing at the top, after PSG fell to a defeat, and Olympique Marseille failed to take advantage.

From England, where the misfits secure impressive wins, to Italy, where the table has a new makeup, here are the top highlights from Europe's top five leagues.

Arsenal struggled against 10-man Chelsea as City closes gap

Arsenal failed to make a man advantage count as they were forced to settle for a point in the home of the world champions, but extended their unbeaten run in the process.

Moises Caicedo was shown his first red card in 130 Premier League games after a horrendous stamp on Mikel Merino just after the half hour, but the game had already been darkened before that time.

Arsenal trio of Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, and Riccardo Calafiori went into the referee's book in the first half-hour, the most cautions the club has received in the opening 30 minutes of a Premier League game since at least 2006-07.

Piero Hincapie joined the list before halftime, and Mikel Arteta had to take one of his three booked defenders off, with Riccardo Calafiori making way for Myles Lewis-Skelly at the interval.

Chelsea led through Trevor Chalobah's header from a corner three minutes after the restart, but Arsenal responded through a goal from Mikel Merino, who heads home a Bukayo Saka's cross to give the Englishman his first league assist in exactly a year.

It finished all square at Stamford Bridge as Arsenal's lead at the league summit is reduced to five points by now second-placed Manchester City, while their unbeaten run against Chelsea and in Stamford Bridge stretches to eight and seven games, respectively.

Manchester City, who defeated Leeds United 3-2 thanks to Phil Foden's brace, moved second, overtaking Chelsea and closing the gap on Arsenal to five points.

There were wins for Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United, while Sunderland came from 2-0 down to beat Bournemouth and continue their unbeaten home run in the Premier League.

Real Madrid surrenders top spot after poor run

Real Madrid have been dethroned as LaLiga leaders following a third consecutive draw, which allows arch rivals Barcelona to assume the league summit despite their El Clásico defeat.

Since their 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the end of October, Los Blancos have won just one of four league games, drawing each of the last three against teams like Rayo Vallecano, Elche, and Girona.

On Sunday night, they passed up the chance to reclaim the top spot from Barcelona as they were denied yet again by Girona, who took a stunning lead on the stroke of halftime with Azzedine Ounahi scoring a wonderful strike.

Kylian Mbappé, who had a goal ruled out for a foul in the first half, responded from the spot at the end of the third quarter, his 14th league goal of the season, but it wasn't enough to satisfy Madrid's wants as they settled for a point.

Earlier, Barcelona came from a goal down to beat Deportivo Alaves 3-1 thanks to goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo, the latter who bagged a double to reach 15 goals in 55 games since his return to the club two summers ago.

Meanwhile, Villarreal keep closing in at the top and are now just two points behind leaders Barcelona after a hard-fought victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Alberto Moleiro bagged a brace, including a 90+5th-minute winner to conquer the resilience of their host, who had fought back from 2-0 down to level 2-2 with goals from Carlos Soler and Ander Barrenetxea.

Atlético Madrid secured its seventh consecutive win across all competitions with a 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo, courtesy of Alexander Sorloth's brace. Three points now separate first from fourth in LaLiga.

Milan takes advantage of tight schedule to claim top in Serie A

Rafael Leao's second-half goal gave Milan a narrow victory over Lazio on Saturday, and it was enough to see them return to the league summit at the end of the gameweek.

The Portuguese superstar got on the end of a low cross from Fikayo Tomori six minutes after the break to produce the match-winning moment, giving Max Allegri's team their eighth league win so far.

Later in the week, Napoli ensured Milan's status as league leaders is retained at the end of the week as David Neres' first-half goal condemned Roma to their fourth league defeat, as they drop from first to fourth.

Gian Pierro Gasperini's team will drop to fifth later tonight should Bologna, who are unbeaten in 12 and won each of their last three, beat Cremonese in the final match of the gameweek.

Now second, Napoli is tied on points with League leaders Milan, but trails by a difference of one goal, while they remain a point ahead of third-place Inter, who ended Pisa's six-game unbeaten run thanks to Lautaro Martinez's double.

Bayern Munich secured another comeback win in the Bundesliga

For the third weekend running, Bayern Munich have come from behind to secure points in the Bundesliga, winning seven out of possible nine, with six out of the last six.

Andreas Hountondji shocked the home fans less than six minutes into the resumption of hostilities as he fired St. Pauli into the lead, and that lasted until the penultimate minute of the half, when Raphael Guerreiro restored parity from a Luis Diaz assist.

When it appeared the game was headed for a stalemate finish, the Colombian then completed the comeback in the second minute of added time, before substitute Nicolas Jackson put the result beyond the reach of the visitors in the final minute of added time.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund ended Leverkusen's impressive Bundesliga home run under Kasper Hjulmand as goals from Aaron Anselmino and Karim Adeyemi overruled Christian Kofane's late goal in a 2-1 win.

The victory moves BVB to third, one point behind second-place Leipzig, who were held in Monchengladbach, a result that allowed Bayern Munich to extend their lead at the summit to eight points.

Mainz, who are playing in the Conference League this season after their sixth-place finish in the previous campaign, resume bottom of the standings after losing 4-0 at Freiburg, while Heidenheim secure first win since the end of September.

PSG humbled in Monaco as Lens go top

Monaco inflicted a second league loss on PSG on Saturday thanks to Takumi Minamino's lone strike, which ensured that the 4-2 defeat last season remains Les Parisiens' only success at the Stade Louis-II since November 2020.

Minamino fired the host in front in the 68th minute from Aleksandr Golovin's assist, while the visitors could not find a response for the remainder of the game, despite Thilo Kehrer's red card that reduced the host to 10 men for the final 10 minutes of normal time.

Marseille failed to take advantage of PSG's slip later on Saturday as they were held in a 2-2 draw with Toulouse, but Lille joined Rennes as winners among the guns during the gameweek.

On Sunday, Florian Thauvin's brace inspired Lens to a 2-1 victory over Angers, moving them to the league summit on 32 points, one ahead of defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain.
