Chelsea, City, Magpies await Londoners as EFL Cup comes alive

Chelsea will face the winner of Arsenal versus Crystal Palace in the semi-finals of this year's Carabao Cup, while Manchester City will battle holders Newcastle United over two legs for a place in Wembley's final.
Carabao Cup action continued during the week as the trio of Chelsea, Manchester City, and Newcastle United won their respective quarter-final games to reach the last four, while Arsenal and Crystal Palace look forward to their meeting at the Emirates next week.
Carabao Cup quarter-final outcomes
Chelsea, who edged Wolves 4-3 in the previous round, were first in action on Tuesday, where they visited the home of Cardiff City, the only non-top-flight club left in the competition, who themselves beat Championship side Wrexham to reach the stage.
Manchester City took on Brentford in an all-Premier League clash on Wednesday, after both teams progressed by beating Swansea City and Grimsby Town, respectively.
Newcastle United, who beat Tottenham Hotspur in the biggest fixture of the previous round, played host to Fulham, Marco Silva's team, who could only edge League One side Wycombe Wanderers on penalties in the last round.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been made to wait a week longer for their scheduled meeting with Crystal Palace due to the Eagles' European engagement as the Conference League first phase concludes. The duo beat Brighton and Liverpool, respectively, in the round of 16.
Chelsea conquer a stubborn Cardiff City
Chelsea overcame a nervy contest against League One side by winning 3-1 thanks to second-half goals in a surprisingly evenly contested match that saw the scoreline even at the 80th-minute.
Enzo Maresca's charge, recently returned to winning ways with their 2-0 victory over Everton last weekend, is keen to build on that outcome against their host, who had won three straight games ahead of kickoff.
Half-time substitute Alejandro Garnacho broke the deadlock just before the hour mark, after Facundo Buonanotte picked up a sloppy pass from a Cardiff defender before slipping the ball to his countryman to fire a simple shot past the goalkeeper.
The host found a way back into the game through David Turnbull, who guided a stunning header past Filip Jorgensen after a period of sustained Cardiff possession in the Chelsea area 15 minutes from time.
Another Chelsea substitute, Pedro Neto, restored the visitors' lead seven minutes later before Garnacho completed his brace to seal a 3-1 victory for the Blues, who reached their second Carabao Cup semi-final in three years.
Rayan Cherki inspired City tame Brentford

Manchester City continued their fine form by besting Brentford 2-0 in the Etihad to reach the Carabao Cup semi-final and extend their winning run to six games, plus a third clean sheet in four games.
Pep Guardiola made a host of changes to his team, especially in attack, where Savinho, Oscar Bobb, and U21 striker Divine Mukasa were given the nod, while the red-hot Phil Foden and Erling Haaland were named on the bench.
Cherki, who had four assists in the previous five games before kickoff, put them ahead two minutes after the hour mark, blasting a brilliant shot into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area after Brentford cleared a corner.
The victory was sealed in the 67th minute by Savinho, who picked up a pass from Tijjani Reijnders just around the halfway line, drove into the box before unleashing a shot heavily impacted by a deflection to beat the visitors' goalkeeper.
Miley broke a resilient Cottagers
Newcastle United reached back-to-back Carabao Cup semi-finals, after Lewis Miley scored an injury-time winner to break the hearts of Fulham, who put up a commendable fight at St. James' Park on Wednesday night.
On his first Newcastle United start following his summer move from Brentford, Yoane Wissa shocked the visitors by opening the scoring in the first ten minutes, marking his return from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Sasa Lukic headed home a deserved leveler for Fulham from Antoine Robinson's cross six minutes later, but Newcastle scored the crucial winner through Lewis Miley's injury-time header from Sandro Tonali's corner to seal a 2-1 win.
Carabao Cup Semi-finals draws
Newcastle United will face Manchester City in what will be an interesting clash, especially given that the Magpies, who will play the first leg at home, are the defending champions, and Eddie Howe will be fresh from his first-ever win over Pep Guardiola.
Meanwhile, Chelsea will be involved in a London derby semi-final, regardless of who wins the quarter-finals between Arsenal and Crystal Palace next week.
The Blues do have an impressive record against Palace, unbeaten in their last 16 meetings since losing both legs of the meeting in 2017, while they are winless in their last eight with Arsenal, and have not beaten the Gunners in Stamford Bridge, where the first leg will be played, since August 2018.
