Bayern, Inter, and Barcelona edges closer as Arsenal falter in title chase

The trio of Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Barcelona extended their lead at the summit of their respective leagues but Arsenal failed to hold on to their advantage as Manchester City moved six points within of the Gunners.

Man City bridge the gap on Arsenal

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City maintained their dominance against Chelsea to move closer to Arsenal ahead of their meeting at the Etihad next weekend in what would be a huge match in deciding the winner of this year's Premier League title.

The Gunners had an early advantage to go 12 points clear of the Cityzens, but suffered just their second home defeat of the season as Alex Scott grabbed a second-half winner for visiting Bournemouth at the Emirates.

Andoni Iraola's side extended their unbeaten run in the league to 12 despite Viktor Gyokeres scoring a first-half penalty to cancel out Eli Junior Kroupi's early opener, a goal that saw the striker become the first teenager to score 10+ Premier League goals in their debut season since Robbie Keane.

On Sunday, Manchester City took full advantage of the slip, beating a sorry Chelsea 3-0 thanks to second-half goals from Nico O'Reilly, Marc Guehi, and Jeremy Doku, a win that stretched their unbeaten run against the Blues to 10.

Both Arsenal and Manchester City could be tied on points by the time City play their game in hand, should they beat their rivals when the two teams clash in Manchester next Sunday, but an Arsenal win will see the nine-point gap re-established.

A disappointing weekend for Arsenal, who have now lost three times in their last four games, as many as they did in their first 49 games across all competitions this season, a situation that leaves Mikel Arteta in a desperate position to avoid a disastrous ending to a promising campaign.

Barcelona running away from Real Madrid

Barcelona extended their LaLiga lead over Real Madrid to nine points after a scintillating 4-1 victory over Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Saturday evening.

Marking his 100th LaLiga appearance, Lamine Yamal was the star of the show, setting up two goals and scoring the third to kill off any hopes of the visitors' comeback later in the game, before Marcus Rashford sealed the win in added time.

Ferran Torres, who scored the opening two goals, reached 61 Barcelona goals in the process, and overtakes the legendary Johan Cruyff (60) on goals for Barcelona, and has now scored 18 goals for the club this season.

Earlier, Real Madrid failed to win their game against Girona on a controversial Friday night at the Santiago Bernabéu as the hosts were denied a chance to score a late winner following an ugly elbow that left Kylian Mbappé bloody.

Federico Valverde scored his seventh goal in as many games since the start of March to give Alvaro Arbeloa's team a second-half lead, but Thomas Lerma fired the visitors level minutes later.

Los Blancos could not produce a match-winning moment as Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé struggled yet again, but they have to pull themselves together as they chase a Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich this week.

Any hope of beating Barcelona to the league title may be as good as gone after the weekend results, which saw them fall nine points behind with seven games to go, including a visit to Camp Nou, where they're almost certain to lose again.

Inter takes advantage of multiple slips

AC Milan have gone from chasing their city rivals Inter for the Scudetto to battling Champions League qualification after a 3-0 home defeat to Udinese on Saturday, dropping to third, five points behind fifth-place Como.

Inter meanwhile closed in on the Serie A title after going nine points clear of now second-place Napoli following a hard-fought win over Como in a seven-goal thriller on Sunday evening.

Despite creating more danger, Milan fell to goals from Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, Arthur Atta, and Davide Bartesaghi's own goal, as Udinese picked up their first away win over Milan since November 2023.

It was the Rossoneri's second home loss in the Serie A this season, both of which have come in their last four in San Siro, after going unbeaten in their first 12 this season.

Napoli also failed to close the gap on Inter earlier in the weekend after being held in a 1-1 draw at Parma, leaving Cristian Chivu's team the opportunity to go nine points clear at the summit with a win away at Como.

The league leaders didn't have a field day in the Giuseppe Sinigaglia, but after trailing 2-0, they scored the next four goals as Marcus Thurman and Denzel Dumfries both bagged doubles, before Da Cunha's late penalty ensured the scoreline stayed competitive.

Inter now have a nine-point lead heading into the final six games of the season, while the priority has changed for Milan, it is down to Napoli to ensure that the title race remains interesting, but the leaders are expected to see out their advantage come the end of May

Bayer Munich close to retaining the Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich edges closer to defending their Bundesliga title on a historical weekend that not only saw them secure a big win on the road and set a new Bundesliga record, but Dortmund also suffered a home loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

BVB had the chance to cut Bayern's lead to six early in the weekend but Nico Kovac's team fell to Robert Andrich's lone goal against Bayer Leverkusen, who have been shambolic defensively in recent outings.

The defeat also means Dortmund will have to wait to confirm their UEFA Champions League qualification status, with Hoffenheim and Leverkusen doing their chances a massive favour by avoiding defeats.

After their 5-0 victory away at St. Pauli, Bayern Munich move 12 points clear of their main rival for the Bundesliga title, with Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson, and Raphael Guerreiro all among the goals as Vincent Kompany gave needed rest to the likes of Harry Kane, and Luis Diaz.

The match also saw Bayern break the record for most Bundesliga goals in a single season, scoring 105 to beat a total of 101 that has stood since the 1971-72 season, while still having five more games to go this term.

With a 47-goal difference bigger than Dortmund's, Bayern would become champions-elect with a win against Stuttgart next weekend, notwithstanding the result of Kovac's team away to Hoffenheim.

No show for leaders in Ligue 1

With PSG and RC Lens not in action during the weekend, the other members of the top five, Lille, Olympique Marseille, and Olympique Lyonnais, won their games to continue the fight to reach the UEFA Champions League next season.
