Picks, Previews, Predictions: Arsenal, PSG and Napoli face tough tests

Action continues in top European leagues this weekend with the race closely contested in four, while Bayern Munich have assumed the status of runaway leaders in the Bundesliga.

The Premier League takes center stage this weekend as the two most in-form teams, Aston Villa and Arsenal, clash, pitting Unai Emery against his former club.

But the drama doesn't stop there: title-chasing Manchester City faces revelation Sunderland, while Europe sees heavyweight bouts like Napoli vs Juventus and Real Betis challenging Barcelona. Every point is crucial in this high-stakes slate of fixtures.

Arsenal, PSG, and Napoli face tough tests

Aston Villa vs Arsenal

The two most in-form Premier League teams go head-to-head in a fixture that has become more famous not only because of how unpredictable it can be but also the history between Aston Villa and Arsenal.

The Spaniard spent almost a season and a half with the Gunners after succeeding Arsène Wenger in the summer of 2018, but has stood between them and glory since his departure, inflicting a costly defeat that denied Arsenal the league title in the Emirates in April 2024.

He has won two and drawn one in five league meetings with Arsenal, while he also famously eliminated them from the Europa League semi-finals while with Villarreal in the 2021-22 campaign.

Despite starting the season with their worst-ever record and having to wait until gameweek 8 before securing their first win, Unai Emery has managed to lift Villa to third in the league, and a win over Arsenal in Saturday's early kickoff will move them to second, three points behind Arsenal.

For Arsenal, winning the match is imperative because it takes them nine points clear of Manchester City and puts the pressure on Pep Guardiola's team, who play host to high-flying Sunderland later in the weekend.

The Arsenal boss may be disappointed with some dropped points, like at Sunderland and Chelsea, but as said by the man himself, every game matters, but maybe the ones against direct competitions matter more.

Villa have won eight of their last nine Premier League games, only losing to Liverpool at Anfield. They have won all of their last eight games at Villa Park heading to this weekend, while Arsenal themselves are on a run of 18 games unbeaten, winning 15.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1-2 Arsenal

Bournemouth vs Chelsea

It is an auspicious time for anyone to face Bournemouth, who have slipped from second place to 14th in the Premier League after failing to win any of their previous five matches, losing four.

However, Chelsea themselves left a lot to be desired last time out, when they failed to build on an impressive performance against Arsenal by losing 3-1 at relegation-threatened Leeds United.

Nevertheless, the Cherries have been one of the best teams at home so far, with only five teams earning more than their 14 home points, while Chelsea has been one of the best teams on the road, with only Arsenal and Spurs having more than their 13 points.

Chelsea also boasts an impressive head-to-head record in this fixture, especially when playing away from home, winning five of seven Premier League games at the Vitality Stadium, losing just once.

Prediction: Bournemouth 1-3 Chelsea

Manchester City vs Sunderland

Who would have thought that Manchester City at home to Sunderland would be one of the biggest Premier League fixtures on a weekend where a lot of top teams are in action?

The newly promoted team has become a revelation in the top-flight, already earning more points than two of the three relegated teams from last season, while being just two points away from leveling the third team, after 14 games.

The Black Cats have already taken three points away at Chelsea, one in Anfield, one against Aston Villa despite playing with 10 men, beat Bournemouth, Brentford, and Nottingham Forest, while also ending Arsenal's winning run with a draw at the Stadium of Light.

Pep Guardiola will be well aware of what he is up against, which will be challenging for his team dealing with a lot of defensive frailties, especially knowing that the visitors have not lost a game where they have scored this season.

Manchester City have recently found their goalscoring form with other players now contributing to relieve Erling Haaland of the burden, especially Phil Foden, who has scored four times in their last two games.

The Cityzens have won all of their last six Premier League meetings with Sunderland and have never lost a home game to the Black Cats in the competition, but they've never met this Regis Le Bris' Sunderland, and could be in for a real shocker on Saturday.

Sunderland, alongside Arsenal are the only two teams yet to concede more than two goals in a single game this season of all the English top-flight teams, and City will be out to test their resolve.

Prediction: Man City 2-1 Sunderland

Napoli vs Juventus

Defending champions Napoli defeated AS Roma last time out in the league, adding the Giallorossi to the list of top victims so far after precious victories over Inter and Atalanta.

Up next for Antonio Conte's men is his former side, Juventus, who have discovered form again under Luciano Spalletti and are now unbeaten in eight, with five wins, including each of their last three.

Despite this being their seventh home game, Napoli have the joint most points at home so far in the Serie A and are yet to lose a game in front of their home fans, making this a tough test for their returning former manager.

Spalletti won the league for Napoli before his departure, a feat that has been equalled by Conte, who will be keen to pick up maximum points against a Juventus side that has won the second fewest points on the road among teams in the current top half of the table.

Napoli have won each of their last six Serie A home games against Juventus, with the Old Ladies' last league win in Naples coming in March 2019, when Miralem Pjanic and Emre Can scored first-half goals in a 2-1 win.

Prediction: Napoli 1-1 Juventus

Real Betis vs Barcelona

Barcelona will be looking to make it six straight wins in LaLiga when they face Real Betis on Saturday evening in Seville, where they have already been beaten heavily by Sevilla earlier in the season.

The Catalan giants have returned to form in the league after their Clasico defeat to Real Madrid and have now overtaken Xabi Alonso's side in the standings, and a win over Betis will take them four points clear before Los Blancos play on Sunday.

Betis, who are unbeaten in eight games have not lost their last two league meetings with Barça, and will be boosted by the return of Antony, who has an invincible record against the champion of Spain.

It is a tricky one for both sides, and Betis will fancy their chances, knowing a defeat could see them drop on the log with Espanyol behind them just for goal difference heading into the gameweek.

Prediction: Real Betis 1-3 Barcelona

Athletic Club vs Atletico Madrid

After losing their seven-game winning run to Barcelona midweek, Diego Simeone will be keen to kickstart another impressive run, especially against another ambitious team in Bilbao, who have been very inconsistent so far.

Atlético missed the chance to move ahead of Villarreal in third place, and could he four points behind the Yellow Submarines should they beat Getafe in the Ceramica early on Saturday.

Even though they are not the favourites, the league is not lost for Atletico, and to stay in the hunt, they have to win every game on their way to cover the distance between themselves and Barcelona, who they trail by six points.

Their host, Athletic Club has won just once in their previous three LaLiga games, losing to Barcelona and Real Madrid, a run that has seen them slip behind Espanyol and down to eighth on the log.

Atlético Madrid has won the last three of this fixture in LaLiga as well as five of the last seven, losing two, while Bilbao has lost three home games, the most of any side in the current top 10 in the Spanish topflight.

PSG vs Rennes

After losing to AS Monaco last weekend, PSG fell to second place in the Ligue 1, and may not have the chance to reclaim top spot this weekend, even with a win over Rennes, should Lens beat Nantes earlier on the same day.

Luis Enrique and his team may have to be patient, although they must also win their own games while at it, and fifth-place Rennes can give them troubles like any team can.

Unbeaten in five and on a run of four straight wins, Habib Beye's team have what it takes to hurt the champions, although they are winless in the last five of this fixture, since a 2-0 victory at the Parc des Princes in March 2023.

Prediction: PSG 3-1 Rennes

Others

The above are the big fixtures coming up in the top five leagues this weekend, while there are other notable ones like Bayern Munich's trip to sixth-place Stuttgart and RB Leipzig at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

Inter against Como is also another top one to watch out for as Cesc Fabregas' team are currently on a run of 12 games unbeaten, whilst they have faced Juventus, Napoli, and Atalanta in this period.

Lazio against Bologna is another top one in the Serie A, while in the Premier League, which is very unpredictable, the London derby match between Fulham and Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage is also a great watch.

Responsible betting is not about fear. It is about structure. A bettor who manages bankroll, stake size, bet history, and emotional timing gets more value from sports markets than someone chasing one dramatic slip.
