UCL Playoffs: Four completes the underdog story as Italian sides exit

  Hassan Afolabi February 20, 2025

It was always going to be a tricky playoff in the UEFA Champions League and many of the bookers favorites did not do themselves a lot of good with the results from the first leg.

Although what some of the minors established was somewhat slender advantages, one can never undermine the feeling it gives for anyone knowing they have an advantage.

In the UEFA Champions League fixtures of the week, teams from Europe top five leagues shockingly exit the tournament after losing to their counterpart from lower leagues.

From Italian team's capitulation to the triumph of the Dutch and Belgium, we take a look at the events to occured in the first-ever UEFA Champions League playoffs.

Tuesday Results

A toothless performance in Rotterdam saw Milan left with a deficit last week. Interestingly, they equaled on aggregate in the first minute of the return leg on Tuesday night.

But as luck would have it, that was as good as it gets for them on the night as they failed to create any real fanger later on in the game, and things got worse when Theo Hernandez was sent off with a second yellow six minutes after the restart.

Missing their maestro, Quinten Timber, who is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to injury, Julian Carranza popped up with the equalizer on the night, heading home a Hugo Bueno cross in the final quarter of the game to send the visitors through on aggregate.

It was only the first time that the Rossonerri have been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in a direct clash with a Dutch side since losing to Ajax in 1995.

It also means Milan has lost out to Feyenoord Rotterdam in their only two different meetings in European competition after a 2-1 aggregate win in 1969.

Later on Tuesday, Atalanta, another Italian club exit the competition following a shocking 3-1 home defeat to Belgian side Club Brugge, who took a 3-0 lead at halftime to extend their lead on aggregate to 5-1.

Belgian teenager Chemsdine Talbi scored three minutes from the half hour mark to complete a first-half brace, having opened the scoring less than three minutes from kickoff in Bergamo.

Ferran Jutgla then score in added time to make it 3-0, literally ending any hope of the host's comeback. Ademola Lookman, subbed on at halftime scored seconds into the restart to spark a an unlikely comeback.

Unfortunately, the CAF Player of the year missed from the spot around the hour mark, and the visitors held on for the win to take them to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 for only the second time in the 21st century.

AS Monaco rue their first-leg home loss as they could only make away with a draw away to Benfica, who held on on the night to ensure their one goal lead from the a week ago is enough to see them through to the round of 16.

It finished three all in a thrilling contest in Lisbon, with Vangelis Pavlidis scoring from the spot to make it 2-2 in the 76th minute, one which saw Benfica become the side with most penalty won im the Champions League this season (4).

Bayern Munich needed a last gasp equalizer on the night through Alphonso Davies to edge out Celtic 3-2 on aggregate, as the Scottish giants scored through Nicolas Gerrit-Kuhn just after the hour mark to level the tie on aggregate.

Bayern, as expected, progress to the round of 16 of the competition , reaching the stage for the 21st time, equaling the record for most since thr introduction of the round in 2003/04 (level with Real Madrid, who later movef to 22 on Wednesday night).

Wednesday Results

On Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund started the day with a goalless draw at home to Sporting CP, with Serhou Guirassy missing a second half penalty to win the game for the host and also pull further clear in the race for the top scorer award.

Yet, it was of no consequence on the progression of the yellow and black wall as a 3-0 first-leg result always meant they have their round of 16 ticket in the bag, and that was how it finished on aggregate.

Later on the night, Juventus surrendered a 2-1 first-leg advantage as they lost 3-1 to PSV Eindhoven after extra time to crash out of the UEFA Champions League.

The Bianconneri have failed to go past the first round of the elimination phase in the competition since a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick gave them a 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid, overcoming a 2-0 first-leg deficit in 2018/19 campaign.

PSV Eindhoven on the other hand, thanks to goals from Ivan Perisic, Ismael Sabairi and Ryan Flamingo, became the first side to eliminate Juventus in a UEFA Champions League tie after losing the first leg – the Old Ladies have progressed in the previous 11 of such scenario.

PSG Paris Saint-Germain completed a 10-0 aggregate win over Brest after a 7-0 win in Parc des princes on Wednesday, which is now the club's biggest European win and Brest's biggest defeat in Europe.

Les Parisiens has now scored 15 goals in three meetings with Brest this month, the most one team has scored against another in a single month amongst top European clubs.

In the biggest fixture of the playoff, Real Madrid made easy work of Manchester City as a Kylian Mbappé hat-trick set them on their way to a 3-1 win in the Bernabeu, completing a 6-1 aggregate win over the Premier League champions.

Kylian Mbappé in the process reached seven UEFA Champions League goals against Manchester City, making the team his favourite opponent in the competition.

It also spell a 13th defeat for Manchester City this season, the most in a single season by any side managed by Pep Guardiola in history.

Player of the week

Kylian Mbappé is the ultimate player of the week. The hat-trick hero easily beat other player of the match winners like Vitinha, Kasper Schmeichel, and others to the prize.

If you’ve been betting for a while, you’ve probably seen people promising “100% sure wins” or “guaranteed tickets.” The truth is plain: there’s no guaranteed win in football. Even top teams don’t win all the time. That’s how the game works. Most fake tipsters use this promise to pull people in. They show edited screenshots of big wins, but you never see their losses. A common scam is when they ask you to pay first before they show any real proof that their past results are genuine.
