The 2026 summer transfer window may have closed, but the free-agent market remains open for clubs looking to strengthen their squads without paying a transfer fee. A number of familiar names, including former Champions League winners and Premier League stars, are still searching for their next challenge.

From experienced defenders and midfielders to proven goalscorers and explosive wingers, there is plenty of quality available. Clubs must, however, weigh each player's age, fitness, wages and recent form before making a move. Here are some of the biggest names currently without a club.

1. Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba, 2018 World Cup winner, 33, left AS Monaco by mutual termination in August after a pre-season injury restricted him to just six competitive appearances and 115 minutes since arriving there in 2025. He returned from an 18-month doping ban in 2025 hoping to rebuild, and still carries genuine passing range, physicality and leadership in midfield, though fitness and match sharpness remain the obvious gamble for any suitor.

2. Karim Benzema

Ballon d'Or winner in 2022, 38, terminated his Al-Hilal contract in August after only six months there, having earlier left Real Madrid for Al-Ittihad in 2023. Reports suggest he turned down a return to Al-Ittihad and an Al-Shabab offer, leaning towards retirement, but MLS interest and a Saudi stay both remain live options.

3. Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez, released by Al-Ahli in July after retiring from international duty following Algeria's early World Cup exit, despite having a year left on his deal. The winger scored 37 goals and set up 46 more in 122 games for the Saudi side, winning two AFC Champions League titles, and still offers guile and set-piece quality off the flank.

4. Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling left Feyenoord in May after a short, underwhelming loan spell that followed his mutual departure from Chelsea in January. 5. Philippe Coutinho
