Top 7 Italian Managers with 50+ UEFA Champions League Matches
On Wednesday, Internazionale coach Simone Inzaghi became the seventh Italian manager to take charge of 50 UEFA Champions League games, setting a new record for the country for producing the most number of managers to have achieved the feat.
In the wake of his achievement, we take a look at the managers from Italy, who have reached this special milestone in Europe's premier club competition.

1. Carlo Ancelotti — 218 games
The most successful manager in history of the UEFA Champions League, Carlo Ancelotti has been privileged to manage top teams across boarders, and he holds the record as the manager with the most games taken charge of in the competition.
The legendary manager has managed at eight different clubs in the competition across 22 seasons, and in four decades.
Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, Juventus, Napoli, PSG Paris Saint-Germain, Parma and Bayern Munich, he has also been able to leave his mark in the competition, winning it five times, twice with Milan and three times across two spells with Real Madrid.
2. Massimilliano Allegri — 100 games
Massimilliano Allegri is a big part of Juventus' history in the 21st century. Apart from helping them dominate the Serie A, he led them to their last two final appearances in the UEFA Champions League.
The Italian tactician has managed 100 games in Europe's premier club competition. A part of those came at Milan where he debuted as a manager in the competition, but majority of the games happened while he was with Juventus.
3. Fabio Capello — 86 games
Fabio Capello is another famous Italian manager who was able to reach the 50 games milestone in the UEFA Champions League thanks to his spells at Milan, with whom he won the title in 1993-94.
He also managed at Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus, totalling 86 games managed in the competition before quitting club work in 2007 for England National Team, where he managed until 2012.
4. Marcello Lippi — 76 games
Marcello Lippi is famous for his association with Juventus, where he took charge of all his 76 UEFA Champions League games and won the club's only title of the competition in the Champions League era.
Across seven seasons, Lippi led the Bianconneri to the final on four occasions. Unfortunately, he could only win one of those finals, with the 1995-96, where his side beat Ajax on penalties in Rome.
5. Luciano Spaletti — 67 games
Luciano Spaletti, across nine different seasons has managed four clubs in the UEFA Champions League since he first did with AS Roma midway through the first decade of the 21st century.
The manager has gone on to manage at Zenith St. Petersburg, Inter and Napoli, totaling 67 games in the competition—the quarter-final achieved with Roma in 2006 remains his biggest placement in the competition.
6. Roberto Mancini — 61 games
Roberto Mancini is another Italian manager with 50 plus UEFA Champions League games managed. Famous for being the manager to win Manchester City their first Premier League title, the manager had managed at top clubs before boarding the flight to England.
From Lazio to Inter, Mancini later joined Galatasaray in 2013 after ending his time at City, totaling 61 games managed in the UEFA Champions League after his return to Inter in 2014, where he another two years.
7. Simone Inzaghi — 50 games
The latest manager to join the list, Simone Inzaghi started at Lazio in 2020-21, after helping them secure qualification for the first time since 2007-08, end a run of 12 years absence and leading them to the round of 16.
Since his move to Inter, Inzaghi has been very consistent in the UEFA Champions League, helping the club reach the final in 2023 and now having them in the semi-finals in 2025.
His 51 appearance will come next week provided he remains Inter's manager, as they look to make it two final appearances in three years with a positive result against Barcelona in San Siro.
