STATISTICS: Ruben Amorim is Man United’s Worst Manager in the 21st Century

  Hassan Afolabi January 1, 2025

Ruben Amorim predicted a storm not long ago, and it would be unfair to say that the Manchester United faithful did not agree with his summation. The actualization of what was already brewing was mind-blowing at the end of 2024.

The club has suffered six defeats in eleven games during the Portuguese’s reign, a downturn not seen in over a century.

They finished the concluded calendar year on a run of four consecutive thrashings and lost their final three games in Old Trafford. If this is indeed the storm they anticipated, then there may be an atom of incompetence given the steadied atmosphere Amorim arrived in.

The expectation completely diminished in the latter days of Erik Ten Hag, but with the short spell of Ruud van Nistelrooy, pride was restored back in the hearts of the fans, and it again filled their appetite for more, making the poor start of Ruben Amorim look like a setback.

In the four games overseen by Ruud van Nistelrooy, the team looked healed from the malady of the final days of their departed Dutch manager, formerly of Ajax, and even gave a good account of themselves in a draw with an on-form Chelsea side when they clashed in a one-all draw in Old Trafford back in September.

Unfortunately, Ruben Amorim could not build on the tempo, leaving a section of fans frustrated as things continue to deteriorate on his watch, while so chose to embrace the harsh reality since the plan with the Portuguese is long-term.

Just two months into his appointment, there have been more negative than positive remarks attached to the eleven games, which kicked off with a rather lucky draw to newly promoted Ipswich Town in Portman Road, where they were second best.

The only convincing performance was the 4-0 thrashing of Everton in Old Trafford, while the derby win over an uncharacteristic City also provided a rare moment of relief, yet a majority period of that match left the fans with an unpleasant expression.

Since the derby win, which ought to be the start of a positive turnaround, he became the first United manager since Sir Alex to win their derby debut. However, it has so far been the otherwise, with the club now without a win in four, dumped out of the Carabao Cup, and down to 14th in the league.

Although there is still very much to expect from the former Benfica midfielder, the rough start to his time at the Theater of Dreams has portrayed him as the club’s worst manager of this century, and statistically, it is nothing but the truth.

Manchester United has appointed six permanent managers, including Ruben Amorim–since Sir Alex Ferguson called time on an illustrious career in management at the end of the 2012-13 campaign. From the unworthy David Moyes to Erik Ten Hag, none has had a worse start than the newcomer.

As action ends for the year 2024, we take a look at the statistics that give off Ruben Amorim as Manchester United’s worst manager since the start of the 21st century.

Statistical Evidence of Ruben Amorim as Man United’s Worst Manager

  • Ruben Amorim is just one of the two managers to lose a Premier League home game to Newcastle United, with the Portuguese suffering a heavier 2-0 defeat than David Moyes’ 1-0 in December 2013.
  • With a win rate of 36.36, Ruben Amorim has the lowest win rate of any Manchester United permanent manager since Herbert Bamlett, from April 1927 to November 1931.
  • United spent Christmas in 13th, their lowest placement at the stage of the season in Premier League history, and in the top flight since Sir Alex Ferguson’s first season in 1986.
  • Manchester United lost six games in December 2024, their most in a single month since losing seven in September 1930.
  • Manchester United have lost six of their first eleven games under Ruben Amorim, equaling the worst start of any manager at the club, set by Walter Crickmer in 1932.
  • Manchester United conceded 18 goals in the month of December, their most in a single month since March 1964, when they conceded the same amount under Sir Matt Busby.
  • Also under Amorim, Manchester United achieved a low of being the first-ever Premier League side to lose five straight games across all competitions in consecutive Decembers.
  • Manchester United has kept just one clean sheet in Ruben Amorim’s first eleven games, the worst record of any of the club’s managers in this century.

Looking Forward to 2025

While Amorim's preferred 3-4-3 formation, which brought him success at Sporting CP, has not translated well at Manchester United, he must find a weather alternative this storm.

Ahead of their trip to Anfield on Sunday evening, damage limitation is a priority against a very in-form side, although it doesn’t get any easier with another trip to Arsenal in the Emirates FA Cup to follow.

Although Ruben Amorim has so far recorded the worst start of any Manchester United manager, he could yet go on to have a good time at the club, but first, everyone attached to the club will have to live through these trying times, as they anticipate the birth of their fair haven.
