Premier League recap: Henderson milestone as Wolves help Arsenal break jinx

The Premier League delivered a host of expected results during the weekend of gameweek 16, but some were achieved with difficulty as top teams ensured victory in their high-stakes fixtures.

From Arsenal's nervous evening to smooth Chelsea and Manchester City wins and Sunderland's derby delight, here is a recap of all nine Premier League games that went down during the weekend.

Henderson milestone as Wolves help Arsenal break jinx

1. Wolves helped Arsenal avoid the Wolves jinx

Only twice in Premier League history has a team at the bottom of the table beaten the leaders, and the Molineux landlords were the architects in both, defeating Manchester United on the two occasions in January 2004 and February 2011.

Rob Edwards led his team into the Emirates Stadium on Saturday night looking for his first points after losing all four games following his appointment as the new boss in November, and almost achieved a great upset.

The visitors frustrated a dominant Mikel Arteta's team in the opening 70 minutes, before the deadlock was eventually broken after Bukayo Saka's corner came off the upright, hit Sam Johnston, and ended in the back of the net.

Tolu Arokodare scored his first Premier League goal on the stroke of 90 minutes, becoming the first-ever Nigerian to score a Premier League goal for Wolves, to peg back Arsenal, who could have lost their top status as a result.

However, Arsenal found a way again in the 94th minute, as Yerson Mosquera headed home Bukayo Saka's cross past his own goalkeeper to give the hosts all three points, and help them return to winning ways after the loss to Villa in the previous gameweek.

2. Hugo Ekitike fires Reds past Brighton as Salah makes history

Liverpool made it back-to-back wins on Saturday evening as Hugo Ekitike bagged a brace to gift them a massive Premier League win, making it five games unbeaten across all competitions amid the club's crisis.

Ekitike, who scored a brace last time out in the league, opened the scoring in the first minute of the match, with English defender Joe Gomez setting him up for Liverpool's first first-half goal in six Premier League games.

Unfortunately, Gomez suffered an early injury and was replaced by Salah at the start of the second quarter, but the Egyptian was able to make the most of his return, setting up Ekitike for the second on the hour mark.

With the assist, Salah surpasses Wayne Rooney as the player with the most Premier League goal contributions for a single club with his 277th, and also eases fears of a winter exit after his reaction to journalists wanting more headliners at full-time.

3. Brilliant City continues Palace dominance

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden inspire Manchester City to another victory on the road as Pep Guardiola's charge beat high-flying Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park on Sunday evening.

Palace, who are placed fourth heading into the gameweek, were looking to end their poor run against the visitors, but were not helped by their own poor finishing, as they missed a host of first-half opportunities before Erling Haaland gave City the lead.

The Norwegian rose highest to plant home Matheus Nunes' cross four minutes before half-time, while Phil Foden continued his impressive scoring run in the league with a low strike in the 69th minute to give the visitors a cushion.

Haaland completed the scoreline with a late penalty after substitute Savinho was brought down in the box by Dean Henderson, taking his goal tally in the league this season to 17, six more than any other player.

4. Aston Villa beat West Ham and dream on

Aston Villa stayed glued to third spot and ready to pounce on any slip-up by either Arsenal or Manchester City, who they continue to trail by three and one points respectively, after their hard-fought win over West Ham.

Unai Emery's charge had to come from behind twice after conceding a 29-second opener, the fastest Premier League goal this season, scored for the host by Matheus Fernandes, but responded in the ninth minute thanks to Dinos Mavropanos's own goal.

Jarrod Bowen restored West Ham's lead with his 100th Premier League goal contribution for the Hammers, as they take advantage at half-time, 45 minutes away from ending a run of four wins.

Unfortunately, Villa had more in them and, inspired by Morgan Rogers's brace, they scored both second-half goals to complete a 3-2 comeback and make it nine consecutive wins across all competitions.

5. Chelsea conquer Everton at the Bridge

Chelsea showed why they've ever lost just once at home to Everton in the Premier League era, putting in a dominant display to earn a 2-0 win that marked their return to winning ways after four uncharacteristic outings.

First-half goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto delivered a win inspired by the latter, who set up Cole Palmer's 58th Premier League goal involvement in the last three seasons, a tally only second to Ollie Watkins among English players.

It is a win that takes loads of pressure off the shoulders of Enzo Maresca, who expressed his frustration for their mini drought, and fear that people were not backing them amidst the poor run, even after recent top-class performances against Barcelona and Arsenal.

6. Tyne-Wear derby delight for Sunderland

Sunderland makes it 10 League games unbeaten against Newcastle United as they marked the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby in almost a decade with a crucial 1-0 win to maintain their top status on the standings.

In his first derby, Nick Woltemade scored a sensational header on the wrong end of the pitch in the first minute of the second half, and his own goal proved the difference in an eventful derby that stretched Sunderland's unbeaten home run to eight.

The result leaves Eddie Howe's Newcastle with just one win away from home in the league so far, while they missed the chance to overtake their rivals on the league standing.

7. Nottingham Forest make Spurs the joke

Nottingham Forest recorded an astonishing 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening, their biggest win against the North Londoners in over 38 years since October 1987, also 3-0.

After a humiliating loss at Everton last time out in the league, Forest were left with just two points above the dropzone, and Spurs were expected to present more of w threat, but Thomas Frank's charge made a mess of things in Nottinghamshire.

It was an evening to forget for their Italian goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, who could not keep out any of the three goals as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ibrahim Sangare inspired the hosts by both creating and scoring the goals.

Former Chelsea star Hudson-Odoi opened the scoring from Sangare's assist, who intercepted a pass from Vicario to play in the winger two minutes before the half-hour.

The same combination led to the second goal five minutes after the restart, and the third, but with roles reversed, 11 minutes from time, as Sangare turned goalscorer to seal a 3-0 win.

8. Harry Wilson shines as Eagles sign off in style for Fulham

Harry Wilson was directly involved in all three goals to help Fulham end a run of back-to-back defeats with their first victory over Burnley in seven attempts after losing four of the previous six.

Lesley Ugochukwu canceled out Emile Smith Rowe's early opener, but Calvin Bassey ensured the visitors head into the half-time break with the lead as he powered home a header from Wilson's cross a minute after the half hour.

After setting up the first two, Harry Wilson finally got on the scoresheet to help Marco Silva's side establish a cushion two minutes before the hour mark, assisted by Samuel Chukwueze, who continues his impressive run for the Cottagers.

Substitute defender Oliver Sonne pulled one back for the host four minutes to the end of normal time to set up a frantic finale, but the visitors held on for all three points, pulling them away from the dropzone.

9. Dominic Calvert-Lewin denies Brentford and Henderson

On his 600th senior appearance, Jordan Henderson scored his first Brentford goal to break the deadlock against a stubborn Leeds United in the 70th minute of their late kickoff on Sunday evening, but the visitors would not settle for a loss.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored in his fourth consecutive game with eight minutes remaining to level the score at a point, and help Leeds United reach three unbeaten games in the Premier League since August 2022, also three games.
