PL Final Day: Arteta, Ødegaard and Fernandes made history as Pep, Chelsea left disappointed

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard lifted the club's first Premier League title in 22 years after the final day win at Selhurst Park, as he joined Mikel Arteta and Bruno Fernandes as history makers on the final day while Pep Guardiola and Chelsea were left disappointed after losses.

In a dramatic final day of the league season, Manchester City fell seven points behind Arsenal after they were beaten at home by Europa League winners Aston Villa, while Chelsea failed to land European football following the loss at Sunderland.

From Arsenal's coronation at Selhurst Park to Bruno Fernandes' record-breaking assist at the AMEX, we take a look at the biggest highlights of the Premier League final day of 2025-26, and those achievements that'll go down in history.

10 Premier League 2025-26 final day Highlights/ Records

1. Arsenal wins the Premier League title

After 21 seasons of trying without success, luck finally shines on Arsenal in the 22nd year, as Mikel Arteta, in his first year following the graduation of his five-year project, delivered a silverware the club has hunted for over two decades.

Kai Havertz's lone winner against Brentford on Monday night proved the most decisive one of their 71, as Manchester City's draw at Bournemouth the following night meant they can no longer match the Gunners' 82-point total at the time.

And on the final day, goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke gave them a comfortable lead before substitute Jean-Phillip Mateta grabbed a consolation, but the much-altered champions held on for the win to avoid mixed feelings at full-time.

2. Captain Martin Ødegaard made Nordic history

With Arsenal clinching the 2025–26 Premier League title, Martin Ødegaard has officially become the first-ever Nordic (Scandinavian) player to lift the Premier League trophy as club captain.

The midfielder, also captain of the Norwegian national team has been at the club since joining on initial loan from Real Madrid in the winter transfer window of 2021 before sealing a permanent move in the summer.

While plenty of legendary Nordic players have won the Premier League before, such as fellow Norwegians Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erling Haaland, Peter Schmeichel (Denmark), and Fredrik Ljungberg (Sweden), none of them did so while holding the permanent club captaincy.

Martin Ødegaard was named Arsenal captain just before the start of the 2022-23 season following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, due to his leadership acumen despite his young age.

3. Mikel Arteta becomes the first ex-player to win the PL title

Mikel Arteta finally delivered the title Arsenal so much craved since moving to the Emirates Stadium in 2006, and in doing so became the first coach to win the Premier League with the club they presented as a player.

Roberto Mancini, who had a brief spell at Leicester City during his playing days in 2001, claimed the record as the first Premier League player to win the title as coach after leading Manchester City to the title in 2012.

Arteta has now become the second to do so, and thanks to his five-year stint with Arsenal leading to his retirement as a player, the former Everton man becomes the first coach to win the title for the club they played for.

4. Pep Guardiola's most humiliating title race

After the loss to Aston Villa in his final game as Manchester City boss, which saw his team fall seven points behind champions Arsenal on the final day, Pep Guardiola effectively endured his most humiliating title race defeat.

Since his first season as a head coach with Barcelona in 2007-08, Pep Guardiola has never finished seven points behind the league winner when his teams have been involved in a title race.

His apprentice, Mikel Arteta not only became the first coach to beat him in this aspect, but he also became the first manager to finish ahead of Guardiola in back-to-back league seasons.

5. Chelsea misses out on Europe

Chelsea failed to qualify for any continental competition next season after a 2-1 loss at Sunderland, which also saw the Black Cats complete the league double over them since the 2000-01 season.

Trai Hume opened the scoring before Malo Gusto's own goal doubled the advantage after the restart, while Cole Palmer's only second open play goal of the Premier League season six minutes later only served as a consolation.

The result saw Xabi Alonso's new team finish tenth, and miss out on Europe for the first time since a 12th-place finish in 2022-23 left them without continental football in the following season.

6. Sunderland returns to Europe after 52 years

Sunderland finished seventh in the Premier League to secure a return to Europe for the first time in 52 years since 1973-74 when they qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup after beating Leeds United in the FA Cup final.

With the smallest budget of all the Premier League teams this season, Regis Le Bris' team has gone straight from the Championship to the continent, thanks to their brilliant start to their season and a late surge that followed an underwhelming run.

7. Bruno Fernandes assist record in contention

Bruno Fernandes claimed his record-breaking 21st Premier League assist at Brighton, after his corner was headed home by Patrick Dorgu, but the achievement may be snapped as the goal will eventually go down as Bart Verbruggen's own goal.

But while it stands as his assist, Bruno Fernandes moves ahead of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne as the player with the most Premier League assists in a single season, a remarkable output that has seen him help Manchester United return to the Champions League.

8. West Ham United relegated

Despite an impressive 3-0 victory over Leeds United on the final day, West Ham United has been relegated from the Premier League, ending a 14-year consecutive stay in the top flight.

Tottenham Hotspur edged Everton 1-0 in North London thanks to Joao Palhinha's strike, and that was enough to ensure Roberto De Zerbi's team remains in the top-flight since their last relegation in 1976-77.

9. Tottenham matched an unusual win record

Tottenham Hotspur's three home wins this season are the joint-fewest by a team to survive relegation in a Premier League campaign, a record shared with Hull in 2008-09.

The North Londoners started and finished the season with home wins against Burnley and Everton respectively, with their only other league wins in front of their home fans coming against Brentford in December.

Despite being managed by three different coaches during the season, from Thomas Frank to Igor Tudor, and finally Roberto De Zerbi, their 15 home points are only better than those of Wolves (14), and Burnley (13).

10. Max Dowman sets multiple PL history records

Max Dowman, at 16 years and 144 days, became the youngest player to start a Premier League game and also win the title, adding these to his previous records as the youngest debutant and goalscorer in the competition.

What a season for the Hale Ender, who also received the Premier League winners' medal, Arsenal's first league title in 22 years, when he hadn't even been conceived.

Others

Emotional farewells also filled the air with Pep Guardiola, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, and Nathan Ake saying goodbyes at Manchester City, while Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson Moraes also returned to the Etihad for proper goodbyes with the fans after their respective departures in previous summer windows.

At Liverpool, Mohamed Salah and AndrewRobertsonn also say goodbye to fans in Anfield following the end of their memorable spells at the club, while the farewell gesture was also extended to other clubs around the country.

If he had remained at Chelsea, Noni Madueke would be in the shadows of Cole Palmer. However, with his move to Arsenal last summer, he didn't just step out; he stepped into imminent glory, and with it, a level of recognition that would have otherwise evaded him.
