Myles Lewis-Skelly: The Black Won't Crack, The Smiles Won't Fade

  Hassan Afolabi March 25, 2025

Myles Lewis-Skelly is having that moment of his own. Vinicius Junior had his with his dance and for Jude Bellingham, it's his rise beyond their imagination that upsets them. For the Arsenal youngster, it's his smiles they want to take.

There should be no room for racism or excessive hate in the beautiful game. But for some, as long as your skin ain't white, you never deserve anything you get, even though you visibly suffered and played your way to achieving the dream.

Myles Lewis-Skelly's breakthrough season has so far had a bit of almost everything, and it's safe to say the kid from Islington is living the dream, staying oblivious of the negative image of him racists and haters are trying to create.

Nonetheless, his good moments have been far more in count, yet, it's his persona to keep the smile on and remain positive in every situation that makes him so special.

Youngsters in their breakthrough have been known to be loved, but it has also been known that one can get so good and get so lucky that envy begin to sets in. It does not get any easier when you play for a not so loved club and your skin is black.

The Hale Ender received a lot of criticism and racist comments following his call up to the National Team, but these have accompanied him since he scored his first professional goal in a 5-1 Arsenal win over Manchester City in January.

Same people who found it amusing when Erling Haaland rubbished him were the ones most affected by him responding with a courageous performance and standing up for himself a few months apart.

Referees, players, fans and even pundits have picked on him, and the fact that he has keep his head fixed shows just how much he must have wanted this, and his willingness to not give it up.

He has remained oblivious to the negative energy, with Tuchel heaping praises on him following the invitation to the national team earlier in the month. The German tactician expressed love with his talent, maturity, professionalism, and most of all charisma, which makes his a lovable guy.

"He’s impressive, nothing but impressive! I can absolutely understand how everyone loves the boy, he’s a big character, a big personality, and a very, very big player. He’s ready to go." Said Tuchel.

Myles Lewis-Skelly: Breakthrough in a Hostile Space

Myles Lewis-Skelly had been part of the Arsenal first team since last season, but had to wait until September this season to finally make his professional debut, coming on as a late substitute in Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Manchester City in a heated finale at the Etihad.

Prior to his introduction in the second minute of added time, Myles Lewis-Skelly was booked just after the hour mark by referee Michael Oliver for supposedly communicating with his Goalkeeper David Raya during an injury break.

More drama unfolded at full-time, when City scored a late equalizer and emotions boiled up after the sound of the final whistle, with an onslaught Erling Haaland saying to him 'who the f**k are you?' as he bareted the Arsenal players and staff.

Myles Lewis-Skelly would go on to make his first senior start a few days later, starring in a 5-1 Carabao Cup round 3 win over Bolton Wanderers in the Emirates Stadium, kicking off his own rise to prominent.

The Hale Ender received more opportunities in the latter days of the year following the injury to Riccardo Calafiori and Ben White, the latter who had a surgery that kept him out until March.

He became a regular part of the team, turning up impressive performances week in and out. He started in the North London derby, where Arsenal came from a goal down to beat Tottenham Hotspur.

He had a big impact in the game, doing what Myles Lewis-Skelly does and with so much fun and freedom. Enjoyed every moment as would a kid who had dreamed of it all his life. He was given a standing ovation by the home fans following his substitution.

When the Arsenal visited the Molineux in January, Lewis-Skelly was controversially sent off by referee Michael Oliver for a foul on Matt Doherty in the first half.

Although Arsenal protested and demanded the referee review the incidence on the VAR monitor, he remained adamant, even booking Jurrien Timber for dissent. Yet, Arsenal would go on to win an appeal the following week, and have the decision overturned.

Lewis-Skelly returned to action the following weekend, starting and scoring as Arsenal beat Manchester City for five in the Emirates.

His goal celebration sparkled a lot of controversy, as he mimicked the Erling Haaland's meditation celebration, in response to the Norwegian telling him off in the reverse fixture.

He received a lot of hateful criticism and was also subjected to racist comments from fans of opposition clubs and even some pundits, with Jason Cundy suggesting he should have his legs broken.

A lot was said about him, but amidst it all, he received words of supports from the likes of Rio Ferdinand, who defended the youngster by asking where the negative comments were, when Erling Haaland made a joke of him and Arsenal in the reverse fixture.

He received another red card in a 1-0 defeat to West Ham United in the Emirates in February for a last man foul on Mohammed Kudus just inside the Arsenal half.

Amidst everything, he continues to be an even better version of his previous self whenever called upon. In the final game before the March international break, he completely nullified Jadon Sancho in an impressive display at the back.

Three Lions Call Up and The Response (s)

Making the England squad for the March international break did not go down well with racist fans, who took to social media to downplay the 18-year-old's abilities.

Thomas Tuchel however, speaks highly of his talent, maturity and mentality ahead of kickoff, stating he has earned the right to start for the country even though it's his first time with the team.

By starting in that meeting with Albania, he became the fourth Arsenal 18-year-old to start debut for the Three Lions, joining Theo Walcott, who remains the youngest on the list and then Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

20 minutes into the contest, Myles Lewis-Skelly made a great run into the box, beating Albania's offside line to get on the end of a Jude Bellingham's pass to open the scoring for England.

He in the process became the youngest player in history to score on their senior England debut, surpassing Marcus Rashford's record of 18 years and 209 days against Australia in May 2016.

He went on to have a great game, defending solidly, heavily involved midfield play while also contributing to the attack down the right, as England kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win.

His exhibition with the Three Lions ended not only ended with a goal but as well the player of the match award, making his critics look pathetic and himself a top competitor for the left-back spot, which has always been there for the taking since Luke Shaw's injuries became persistent.

Thomas Tuchel, obviously delighted, had nothing but positive words about the youngster at full-time. " He (Myles Lewis-Skelly) came into camp and showed straight away that it’s so normal to fall in love with him."

Aside his talent, his versatility is also what will most likely keep him in the team. Primarily a midfielder, who can operate as a #6 and #8, Myles Lewis-Skelly currently plays as a left-back, yet he is able to dictate play.

Thomas Tuchel also talked about this part of him in his post match presser. ‘I think Myles’ very best position is where he plays for Arsenal in the left double six, the double six inverted role. He’s a fantastic footballer.' said the former Chelsea boss.

‘If you see him in possession games in training, the level of first touch, the quality of first touch, the quality of body movement, how he opens up his body, how he plays the passes, he has a very high understanding of the game, it comes very natural to him.

‘He’s very versatile and I think he can do a lot of things. We tried to play more conventional today because it’s easier to learn, we have many players from many different clubs, he did very well because he can adapt because he understands very quickly.’

A few days after his debut, Myles Lewis-Skelly started again, and played 80 minutes as England played host to Latvia in Wembley. He again dazzled as the Three Lions sealed a 3-0 victory, winning the free-kick scored by Reece James for the opener.

Over the course of the two England games of the break, no player made more recoveries, while he also came out on top in all but one of his contest duels. Only Harry Kane and Ezri Konsa scored more goals and won more fouls respectively.

Myles Lewis-Skelly: The Smiles Ain't Gonna Fade

Six months into his senior debut, Myles Lewis-Skelly is already a major part of Arsenal and already a capped England international. It appears it is only going to get better for the London born startlet.

Although England is blessed with a lot of talented players, he is one that can give anyone a run for their money when it comes to competition, and being such a lovely guy also makes things easier.

He is a tough one, a trait which is also helpful in making him a better player. Only Ezri Konsa has a better success rate than his 75 percent amongst players to have contested 60+ duels in the Premier League this season.

He is trusted by Mikel Arteta to start for the Arsenal even in the tough fixtures, despite €40 million on Riccardo Calafiori last summer and having Oleksandr Zinchenko and the option of playing Jurrien Timber on the left to restore Ben White back into the team on the right.

The manner in which Thomas Tuchel discusses him as a topic, suggests he definitely has genuine interest in MLS, and would want to keep him around as long as he continues to deliver when called upon. And consistency isn't a worry while he also has a competitive environment at club level.

Amidst the hates and criticism, Myles Lewis-Skelly has never looked affected, yet he continues to make his critics pathetic whenever he steps onto the green grass.

His Mom has been a major part of his career so far, and she'll continue, with the job to get even better as the boy grows into a man. She will be needed to guide him as they critics aim for him, because you don't expect them to stop as a player who wants to continue to thrive at top level.

It takes a tough mentality to stick around these days and he surely has that beneath his innocent smiley face. Myles Lewis-Skelly will continue taking his chances henceforth and, will be here for long, maybe much longer. Critics better learn to to love it, or at least live with it.
