Liam Rosenior: A man lost in the reality of his dreams

After Chelsea lost five consecutive league games without scoring for the first time in 114 years, Liam Rosenior must be adjusting to a new reality, one that the job is nothing compared to the one he had at Strasbourg, where he was considered a genius.

Chelsea has fallen to seventh in the Premier League standings, having played a game more than their counterparts, while also falling eight points behind the final Champions League qualification spot with just four games to spare.

The departure of Enzo Maresca has not been kind to the club, but Liam Rosenior, the man shadowed with the responsibility of leading them into the future must be out of his depth at the moment, and will appreciate being taken off it.

The Englishman returned to Brighton almost a decade after helping them secure promotion into the top flight, but to a baptism of fire as the Seagulls extended their winning run against the Blues to four, twice as many as they recorded in 23 meetings before this run.

Rosenior has now lost more Premier League games, six in 13, than his predecessor Enzo Maresca, five in 19, this season, despite a promising start that saw him win each of his first four games in the competition.

Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinselwood, and Danny Welbeck secured a win that sent Fabian Hurzeler's team ahead of the visitors and into the sixth position, keeping their hopes of reaching the Champions League for the first time in their history.

It was a night to forget for Chelsea in the absence of stars like Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Reece James, and Estevao Willian, although they did possess enough to stand their ground at the AMEX, but they showed no resistance at all.

It was their 12th league defeat of the season, only in the 2022-23 (16) season have they suffered more in the competition since the turn of the century, and with four more tough fixtures to come, the odds that this campaign stands outright second wouldn't be much.

For the first time in 14 months, Chelsea failed to register a shot on target in a Premier League game since a 3-0 loss at Brighton in February 2025, a bit too much to take from a side that has attempted the most shots across the previous four matchdays.

Liam Rosenior | A man lost in his dreams

When he was leading Chelsea's sister club in France, Liam Rosenior would have had his eyes on the Chelsea job for the future, but it came rather too soon after the club had a fallout with Enzo Maresca before the turn of the year.

Despite his relative lack of experience at the top level, Chelsea management was convinced by the job he had done at Strasbourg, but that decision couldn't have proven more of a disaster, and it didn't take long.

From the players' point of view, it is obvious Rosenior does not command much authority like Maresca, especially since it didn't take long for him to be found out tactically, and he continues to lose it as a result continues to plummet.

It is a completely different world from the one he lived in at Strasbourg. In the dugouts, he looks like a man needing rescuing, because the job has not just proved too much to handle, but is already going after him mentally.

Five historical lows for Chelsea after Brighton loss

1. Most consecutive PL losses

It was only the second time in Premier League history that Chelsea had lost five consecutive games, and the first time since doing so under Glenn Hoddle 33 years ago in the 1993-94 season.

Losses against Newcastle United, Everton, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Brighton, have accumulated into a record-equalling low, leaving them in a dire situation ahead of their next league game against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.

2. Longest goal drought in PL

Chelsea are currently on a run of 476 minutes without scoring in the Premier League, their longest such run in the competition since the start of the new era.

The Blues haven't found the back of the net since Joao Pedro completed his hat-trick in a 4-1 thrashing of Aston Villa back at the start of March.

It's their longest goal drought in league football since a run of nine games without scoring between mid-December 1980 and February 1981 under manager Geoff Hurst, when they were in the second division.

3. Matched 114 years of unwanted records

Chelsea have lost five consecutive league games without scoring for the first time in 114 years since November 1912. Failure to score in their last five league games means Liam Rosenior shares this unwanted record with David Calderhead.

4. End to a 46-game shot on target PL run

Chelsea failed to have a shot on target in a Premier League game since February 14 2025, bringing an end to a run of 46 consecutive games where they have managed to do so since a 3-0 loss at Brighton on the said date.

Substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Marc Guiu came close for the Blues, but their poor start and set-up made it easy for Brighton to nullify their attack, leaving them with no chance at Bart Verbruggen's goal.

5. Most consecutive losses to Brighton

Tuesday night's defeat is Chelsea's fourth in a row against Brighton, their most against the Seagulls, who had won just two of their previous 23 historical meetings across all competitions.

Liam Rosenior | What to look forward to?

Chelsea return to action this weekend when they take on Leeds United at Wembley for a place in the Emirates FA Cup final, and the coach must already be wary of a team they haven't beaten in their two meetings this season.

Enzo Maresca's team was beaten 3-1 in December, while the Whites came from 2-0 down to secure a draw against Rosenior's team in the reverse fixture, and arrive in Wembley on a run of six unbeaten across all competitions.

It will not be an easy one, with Daniel Farke's team in a much better shape, but for his own peace, Rosenior will hope that all his best players are available and turn in better shape than they have recently.

The former Hull City man is already talking about picking the best players who want to represent the club, another sign of internal friction, after a recent episode that saw vice captain Enzo Fernández suspended for two games.

Nevertheless, it does not look like the former defender will survive beyond the end of the season at Chelsea, but while he still retains his status as head coach, he has to find a way to get the team together to overcome the remaining fixtures of the season with fewer faults.
