Finding the next KDB: 5 Ideal Kevin De Bruyne Prototype in T5 Leagues

  Hassan Afolabi April 23, 2025

A new dawn will kick off at Manchester City this summer, when the Premier League giants seek to rebuild their team following the departure of a club legend, Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgian is not the only long-serving player leaving the Etihad in the summer, but will be accompanied by a lot of others, and the club will be in the market for dependable players who would help keep up the standard.

De Bruyne has been one of a kind since his return to England with the Cityzens more than a decade ago, and his imminent departure is set to leave a big hole in the team. Replacing him will not be easy, but City do have to move on, even so, as De Bruyne himself is past his prime, as age is catching up with him.

In this article, we take a look at five ideal replacements for him, narrowing the options down to players playing their trade in the top five leagues.

5 Ideal Kevin De Bruyne Prototype in T5 Leagues

1. Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen

The German sensation has emerged as one of the few midfielders capable of replicating the creative output of Kevin De Bruyne.

At just 20, Wirtz has made the Bundesliga his playground, orchestrating Bayer Leverkusen’s attack with a maturity beyond his years, leading them to their first-ever League title in top-flight history.

During the title-winning season, Wirtz contributed directly to 37 goals across all competitions, scoring 18 and assisting 19, while boasting an 84% pass accuracy in the final third and averaging 2.4 key passes per 90 minutes.

His vision, press resistance, and ability to thread passes in tight spaces mirror the qualities that make De Bruyne indispensable.

What makes Wirtz even more remarkable is his comeback story. After suffering a torn ACL in March 2022 that sidelined him for nearly a year, he returned stronger, quickly re-establishing himself as a talisman for club and country.

His versatility, comfortable as a No. 10, an advanced No. 8, or wide playmaker, adds layers to his game that make him a modern midfield prototype.

Only a few players carry the creative weight for City post KDB, and Wirtz is at the top of that tree. His trajectory makes him not just a candidate to replace KDB, but a star in his own right, with a story almost similar to that of the Belgian.

2. Cole Palmer of Chelsea

A homegrown solution to the De Bruyne dilemma, Cole Palmer had all the makings of a natural successor.

Schooled in the City Football Group philosophy, the Englishman’s technical prowess and spatial intelligence were tailored for Pep Guardiola’s system. But his move to Chelsea two summers ago means that possibility now exists only in fantasy.

Since joining Chelsea in 2023, Palmer has evolved into one of the Premier League’s standout performers. He’s notched 20+ goals and 10+ assists in the league in his debut season, winning several young player of the season awards.

Often dragged a young Chelsea side forward with his composure and creativity. He averages 3.1 key passes and 4.2 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes. Palmer has become a complete attacking threat.

While his talent continues to blossom in West London, his long-term contract and central role in Chelsea’s rebuild all but rule out a return to the Etihad.

As much as he fits the profile to succeed the man he once looked up to, the timing and context are no longer aligned, and both City and Cole Palmer can only look back and wish they had reached an agreement to continue their association back in 2023.

Palmer may not be the man to replace De Bruyne at City, but for everyone at the he, he represents what could have been: a City academy graduate stepping seamlessly into the Belgian’s boots.

3. Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest

Manchester City have reportedly identified Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White as a potential summer target. He is considered an alternative option to Florian Wirtz, who is also a target of Bayern Munich.

While his name might not carry the instant weight of a marquee signing, Pep Guardiola and his scouting team rarely misfire, and there’s substance behind the interest.

Since joining Forest from Wolves in 2022, Gibbs-White has been a creative spark and a relentless engine in midfield. His energetic style makes him a force in duels and transitions, contributing significantly on both ends of the pitch.

While his creativity may not match Kevin De Bruyne’s generational standard, it remains well above average for a playmaker operating in a struggling side.

Gibbs-White led Forest in assists in both of his full Premier League campaigns, registering 10 and 8 respectively, and is currently just two behind Anthony Elanga in the 2024/25 tally.

Across the last three seasons, only Kevin De Bruyne, Bukayo Saka, Mohamed Salah, and Ollie Watkins have more Premier League assists than his 25.

That output, for Nottingham Forest, hints at a much higher ceiling. In a structure like City’s, with superior movement and finishing around him, MGW could evolve from a random player to an elite creator.

4. Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa

Another gem made in Manchester City's academy, Morgan Rogers is beginning to justify the early faith placed in him by the Cityzens. Pep Guardiola has publicly praised his transformation, applauding his development and standout performances for Aston Villa.

Rogers’ rise has been meteoric. From battling relegation with Middlesbrough in the Championship to starring in the Premier League and making an impression in the UEFA Champions League, all within two years of leaving City, his trajectory has been nothing short of remarkable.

His ball-carrying ability has flourished under Unai Emery, and nowhere was that more evident than against his former club. Rogers tormented City’s defence at Villa Park in December, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 win after assuring the opener.

In his first full top-flight season, Rogers has been directly involved in 24 goals across all competitions. His tally includes standout performances against elite sides like City itself, PSG, Spurs, and a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Celtic.

A return to the Etihad would be a proud moment: a homegrown talent who never made a senior appearance for the club, returning as a proven force. Imagine the pride of wearing the sky blue again, this time, as a marque acquisition.

5. Bilal El Khannouss of Leicester City

Amid Leicester City's slide into chaos, Bilal El Khannouss has emerged as a rare bright spot. The Moroccan playmaker, signed from Genk for £21 million last summer, looks far too talented to follow the Foxes into the Championship.

Though he penned a four-year deal, Leicester’s relegation could open the door for a move, especially if Manchester City is the club keen on his signature.

Given Leicester City's situation, prying him away may not be as complicated as his contract suggests. Their focus may be switched to getting the best from the deal.

El Khannouss profiles as an exciting creative hub. His composure, vision, and awareness draw early comparisons to a young Kevin De Bruyne, who himself arrived at City in 2015 as a high-potential, yet still developing, talent.

While not yet the finished article, El Khannouss needs the right environment to evolve. A club like City, with its structure, could offer exactly that, although it remains to be seen if they can have the patience.

Level of Difficulty of a Potential Move

The trio of Florian Wirtz, Morgan Gibbs-White and Bilal El Khannouss will most likely be available in the summer and would be open to a move to Manchester City.

Although the club faces stiff competition from Bayern Munich for his signature, Florian Wirtz is still the primary option, and Pep Guardiola has reportedly held a meeting with him to discuss his plans for him.

The player's dad prefers his son to remain in Germany and move to Bayern Munich, but it is believed that Wirtz will make his own decision in the end.

Morgan Gibbs-White will be blown away by the interest from Manchester City, and with two years left in his contract, Forest will not be too reluctant to sanction a sale.

With El Khannouss, convincing Leicester City won't be farfetched, but whether or not the player is developed enough to be given a major role leaves a big question mark.

Pulling off a deal to bring Academy alumnus Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers will be very difficult as they are at ambitious clubs with years left on their current deals.
