Ermedin Demirovic and the Stars of the Weekend in Top 5 Leagues

  Hassan Afolabi April 7, 2025

It was an unusual weekend, one that saw none of the current Premier League top five win in their respective games, while League leaders Liverpool suffered their first defeat on the road in Craven Cottage.

In Spain, the Clasico rivals also winless with Real Madrid losing their first league home game to Valencia since 2008, while Barcelona also failed to beat Real Betis over two legs in a LaLiga season since 2006/07.

In Italy, Inter bottled a 2-0 lead to drop points at Parma with Napoli set to take on Bologna on Monday. PSG crowned champions in Ligue 1 with six games to spare while both Bayern and Leverkusen won in the Bundesliga to keep the title race alive.

Amidst the tightness of the fixtures, some players did standout, and amongst those we've selected one from each league in our list for this week's edition of the stars of the weekend in top five leagues.

From hat-trick hero Ermedin Demirovic to the goalkeeping heroics of Mathew Ryan, here are the players who made the headlines in each of the leagues in Europe's top five.

Stars of the Weekend in Top 5 Leagues

Premier League: Alex Iwobi of Fulham

For a Fulham side that had not won a Premier League home game against Liverpool since December 2011, not many could have tipped them to that poor run on Sunday, against an Arne Slot's charge running away with the league title.

Liverpool had also not lost away from home in the league under Arne Slot. By extension, their last League defeat away from home came in a 2-0 loss at Everton in April 2024 – they had a 17 game unbeaten run away from home in the Premier League ahead of kickoff.

After Arsenal failed to beat Everton on Saturday, the reds were presented a chance to go 14 points clear at the summit, but Hale End graduate, Alex Iwobi, has other ideas in Craven Cottage.

The Nigerian attacker, enjoying his best Premier League season in front of goal scored one and added another as Marco Silva's side overcame an early deficit to become the first side to score three first half goals against Liverpool since Aston Villa in October 2020.

It took less than 10 minutes for Ryan Sessegnon to restore parity for the host after Alexis Mac Allister gave the visitors the lead 14 minutes into the encounter.

Responsible for their own downfall for Fulham's first goal, Liverpool shoot themselves in the foot yet again two minutes after the half hour with Andrew Robertson guilty of another error, joining Curtis Jones on the list.

The Scottish defender's attempted switch of play went straight to Alex Iwobi on the edge of the box. The Fulham man controlled the ball to his left before unleashing a shot that took a slight deflection en route to goal.

Five minutes later, Iwobi ensured there's no way back into the game for the league leaders by setting up teammate Rodrigo Muniz for their third of the game.

After Liverpool cleared their lines from a corner, the ball was sent up in the air and Iwobi cleared back to the edge of the area to prevent a counter. Muniz connected brilliantly, taking a touch to beat Van Dijk before firing home between the legs of Kelleher for 3-1.

Liverpool would go on to score one second half goal but Iwobi's brilliant first half showing was enough for the host to return to winning ways, following back-to-back London derby loses to Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Iwobi is our Premier League player of the weekend, entering our list for the first time this season. His impressive outing saw Fulham also reached 48 points, already one more than they had in the entirety of last season.

Spanish LaLiga: Ramon Terrats of Getafe

Ramon Terrats was the highest rated player in the LaLiga during the weekend and his two goals ensured a triumphant win for Getafe, who achieved 4-0 victory at Real Valladolid, their biggest away win in the topflight in decades.

Terrats scored to double the visitors' advantage in the 19th minute. Chrisantus Uche, who assisted Mauro Arambarri for the opener eight minutes earlier lobbed and excellent through pass for the Villarreal loanee, and he controlled before unleashing a low strike to give Getafe a cushion.

The winger made it 3-0 seven minutes before the halftime break. Uche, who was set-up the first two goals played Juan Bernat loose on the flank with a back heel pass. The left-back then whipped a dangerous ball into the area, where Terrats arrived to fire home from inside the box.

Defender Domingo Duarte headed home from a corner ten minutes from time to seal a 4-0 win as Pepe Bordalas' charge strengthen their grip on 11th while keeping alive their dreams to reach Europe next season.

24-year-old Terrats, who had only scored once in 110 senior games before his loan move to Getafe in February has now scored four in eight games, all of which have come in his last two appearances.

He is the face of LaLiga during a weekend, where neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona superstars could see their teams to maximum points.

Italian Serie A: Assane Diao of Como

The Senegalese youngster inspired Cesc Fabregas' charge to their first win in five games to reignite their journey away from the drop zone with all three points that takes them to 33 points in the league standing.

The 19-year-old scored one and assisted another in a 3-1 win away to Monza, who is now without a win in eleven and has picked up just one win in their last 24 games across all competitions.

The host took a shocking lead in the fifth minute through Dany Mota, but their honeymoon didn't last too long as Diao set up Jonathan Ikone to restore parity around ten minutes later.

Diao, who hasn't register a goal contribution for Como since his winner against Napoli in February, plays the ball to Ikone on the right, and the Frenchman did all the difficult job, skipping past a couple of challenges before bending the shot into the bottom corner.

Assane Diao scored to give Como the lead in the 38th minute. After a terrible defending by Monza, Diao quickly took over the ball, controlled before placing a low shot beyond the reach of the goalkeeper to complete the comeback.

Mergim Vojvoda scored six minutes after the restart to take the game beyond the host and hand Como their third away win of the Serie A season.

Diao takes his goal contributions in the league this season to seven, six goals and one assist following his arrival from Real Betis in January, only Nico Paz and Patrick Cotrune have more for the club.

He is the player of the weekend in the Serie A for the Gameweek and Fabregas must be delighted with the youngster, who literally takes his side seven points above the drop zone.

German Bundesliga: Ermedin Demirovic of Stuttgart

It remains to be incroyable how the only win in Bochum's last five games has come against Bayern Munich as Stuttgart added to their misery, inflicting a fourth defeat in that run.

At the heart of it all was Bosnian striker Ermedin Demirovic, who took advantage of some horrendous defensive performance from their host to bag his first Bundesliga hat-trick, taking his tally in the competition this season to 13.

The striker got his first of the day in the eleventh minute, three minutes after German defender Jeff Chabot broke the deadlock. His run was spotted just after the half way line by Turkiye midfielder Atakan Karazor, who played a through pass into his path.

Demirovic took it in his stride under pressure from two defenders, but kept his cool and plant a delightful chip over the goalkeeper to double the visitors' advantage – it was the 27-year-old's 70th career goal.

His second of the day came just three minutes after the restart. The former Augsburg striker made an intelligent run in the box to slam home a Ramon Hendriks cross first time, taking the game beyond Bochum by making it 3-0.

He completed his hat-trick five minutes to the end of normal time in a similar play. This time, Leonardis Stergiou send in a cross from the right, and Demirovic guide it home from close range to achieve a climax for himself.

With 13 Bundesliga goals this season, only six players have more than Demirovic so far, while he remains the club's leading goal scorer this season.

Demirovic, who also equaled his personal best scoring season with 15 goals across all club competitions is our pick in the Bundesliga during the weekend. His goals helped Stuttgart move from bottom half up to ninth on the log.

Aside the goals, the striker also had an impressive showing overall, creating two chances for his teammates and guiding all of his four attempted shots on target.

French Ligue 1: Mathew Ryan of RC Lens

On a weekend where goalkeepers were the heroes for their respective teams, Mathew Ryan came out just above the others after leading Lens to a slender win over Saint Etienne, earning his third clean sheet in four games in the process.

Lens, unbeaten in each of their six previous in this fixture looked more confident of coming out on top on Sunday compared to the visitors, who had just one win and six defeats in their previous eleven heading into the Gameweek.

Despite Lens dominance of play, the quality of chances created were pretty even as both side carved out four big chances each, but only one goal was produced in the entirety of the game.

Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan emerged as the hero for the host, keeping them in the game amidst the threat from the visitors, including keeping out an Irvin Cardona's penalty late in the first-half.

Substitute Goduine Koyalipou scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes to the end of normal time to seal a third win in four games for the host as they continue their hunt for a place in Europe next season with another three point.

Ryan also continued to decisiveness in goal for the club since his move from Roma in January – eight games now, the 32-year-old has now kept five clean sheets in eight Ligue 1 games, while also saving his first penalty for the club.

He emerges above other impressive goalkeepers like Leon Donovan of AJ Auxerre, Yahia Fofana of Angers, Mathieu Gorgelin of Le Havre and Yehvann Diouf of Reims.

Ultimate Player of the Weekend

Without a doubt, Ermedin Demirovic comes out on top. The Stuttgart hat-trick hero was the most productive player during the weekend in top five leagues, and so he takes his crown as the leader of all.
