Charles de Ketelaere, the stars and the numbers of the UEFA Champions League round five

  Hassan Afolabi November 28, 2024

Charles de Ketelaere was the overall star of the UEFA Champions League round five as the conclusion of the fixtures this week left several teams in their lane as far as Europe's biggest club competition is concerned.

For teams like Real Madrid and PSG Paris Saint-German, the above may be limited to this campaign as their performance look unrecognisable, with both in no man's land three games to the end of the group phase.

However, seeing the other members of the elimination zone, it is less surprising as it would have been the expectation at the start of proceedings, albeit there may be a few let down, like German Bundesliga duo of RB Leipzig and Stuttgart.

Nonetheless, the round five brought so much excitement with the fixtures of Tuesday producing 40 goals, second most in a single day in the competition's history, behind 44 in October 1st 1997.

The likes of Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen scored five or more goals, while thrillers involving Manchester City and AC Milan also produced six and five goals respectively.

Wednesday was also not sort of excitement, although some of the fixtures brought out the best in the goalkeepers. Shakhtar Donesk's Dmytro Riznyk set a new record for most saves in a single game, Jaoimhin Kelleher denied Kylian Mbappé from the spot and Daniil Khudyakov of Sturm Graz impressed on his first-ever start for the club.

Also on Wednesday, Red Star Belgrade scored five, Benfica and PSV Eindhoven won five goal thrillers while Borussia Dortmund hit three without reply in Zagreb.

We take a look at the stars who join Charles de Ketelaere, the mesmerising Belgian who leads our selection for the UEFA Champions League round five of group games.

Charles de Ketelaere of Atalanta

Atalanta continued their fine form on Tuesday night as Gian Piero Gasperini's charge took a significant step to sealing an automatic qualification for the round 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a 6-1 win away to Young Boys.

On the night, Belgian sensation Charles de Ketelaere became the first player to register five goal involvement in a single UEFA Champions League game for an Italian team, as well as only the fourth to do so since the 2016-17, joining Serge Gnabry, Neymar Jr. and Erling Haaland.

The former Club Brugge teenager set up Matteo Retegui for the opener in the ninth minute of the match and got himself on the scoresheet just two minutes before the half-hour to restore their one-goal lead after the host had restored parity two minutes after going behind.

The visitors established a two-goal lead less than four minutes later, with de Ketelaere again, setting up Sead Kolasinac for the Bosnian to score his first-ever goal in the competition.

There was more to come before the break as de Ketelaere completed a hat-trick of assists, setting up Matteo Retegui with a cross six minutes before half-time to make it 4-1.

Ten minutes after the restart, the 23-year-old completed a brace with his second goal of the night, teasing the Young Boys defence on the edge of the box before unleashing a shot which was helped into the back of the net via a deflection, from a Mario Pasalic pass.

De Ketelaere was withdrawn 15 minutes from time and his performance is rated a 10/10 by several pundits, although the fact that he was overlooked for the official Player of the match award by UEFA observers left a bitter taste.

Nevertheless, De Ketelaere made it back-to-back Champions League assists and took his total to four, tieing with Mohamed Salah and Igor Piaxao for most in the competition this season.

Overall, he has now played a direct involvement in 13 goals this season with four goals and nine assists, meaning he is two assists away from equaling his total of eleven for last season.

As the playmaker continues to impress with Atalanta, the tougher it gets for Milan, who brought him to Italy in a big move, but could only get one assist off him in 40 games, before deciding to ship him off to Bergamo.

Bukayo Saka of Arsenal

The Arsenal star boy built on his player of the match performance during the weekend to help the club to a back-to-back win for the first time in almost two months following the 5-1 thrashing of Sporting in Lisbon.

Bukayo Saka was again pivotal in a big European win as Arsenal scored five goals in the Jose Alvalado stadium, as many as they had in eight previous away games in the UEFA Champions League.

Prior to kick of in Lisbon on Tuesday night, the Gunners had only won just one in eight previous away games in the competition, while Sporting had not been beaten all season, winning all but one, which ended in a draw.

In addition to their good form, Sporting had not lost a home game in 14, but after Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring on the night, Bukayo Saka quickly set-up Kai Havertz for the second to leave the host dumbfounded and lost on their own turf.

Saka's contributions was important but even more impressive was the timing of his goal and assist. After Sporting pulled one back at thr start of the second-half and began to look threatening, Saka converted a penalty for his goal on the night, further pegging back Sporting by making it 4-1.

He almost got a second assist in the final minute of added time but Leandro Trossard could not do enough to get a shot away after being through with a delightful pass.

Official player of the match, Bukayo Saka takes his goal involvement to 15 in 17 Arsenal games this season, while his goal contributions in the UEFA Champions League also reaches 11 in 13 appearances.

Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen

Five star Bayer Leverkusen schooled Salzburg in the BayArena thanks to a Florian Wirtz masterclass performance, which was highlighted by three goal involvement in 75 minutes on Tuesday night.

Following the disappointing 4-0 defeat to Liverpool last time out in the UEFA Champions League, Xabi Alonso's charges were keen to turn things around and build momentum for the long run of games.

Wirtz, who was always going to be decisive opened the scoring from the spot eight minutes in, then won a free-kick that was converted by Alejandro Grimaldo three minutes later for 2-0.

The German completed his brace on the half-hour, exchanging passes with Grimaldo in a sweeping team move before tucking it past Schlager for 3-0 as the host continued to pot hot on the visitors.

The 5-0 scoreline was completed seconds before Wirtz was withdrawn and he registered his only assist on the night with his final touch, picking out Aleix Garcia, who finished well for his first-ever UEFA Champions League goal.

Wirtz now has five goals in as many UEFA Champions League games this season, and one more assist, taking his overall goal involvement for the Bundesliga champions to 13, made up of nine goals and one assist.

He was named the official player of the match, finishing with his 50th club goal and drawing praise from his manager Xabi Alonso as 'a Champions League player'.

Malik Tilman of PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven took a huge step to nicking a place in the UEFA Champions League playoff having extended their unbeaten run with a remarkable comeback win at home to Shakhtar Donesk.

The Eredivisie winners went 2-0 down in the first-half as goals from Sikan and Zubkov saw the visitors to a comfortable lead heading into the final four minutes of normal time, before the host woke up just in time to defy the odds and alter the narrative.

Malik Tilman was the star of the night, scoring a late brace to even the score before Ricardo Pepi net a last minute winner to send the Philips stadium into frenzy.

The Bayern Munich academy alumnus, who starred with a goal and a couple of assist in a 4-0 win over Girona in the previous round, scored a clever free-kick in the 87th minute, managing to deceive Dmytro Riznyk, who had been outstanding all night.

A few minutes later, Tilman draws the host level with a long-range shot, exposing Riznyk, the Shakhtar Donesk goalkeeper, who made 15 saves on the night.

Pepi scored the winner with virtually the last kick of the game to take PSV to eight points and moving the club up to 18th on the log with three more games to the end of the group phase.

Tilman, the official player of the match for orchestrating the comeback, takes his goal involvement in this season's UEFA Champions League to five, already two more than he had in 18 appearances in the competition before this season.

Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid

The Argentine appears to have finally found his form for Diego Simeone's charge following his big move from Manchester City in the summer.

He proved up to the task to ensure Liverpool have their first win against Los Blancos after eight failed attempts, and keep their 100 percent European record this season.

Matteo Retegui of Atalanta

The Italian continued his fine form for the Bergamo outfit with a first-half brace against Young Boys, finally scoring his first goals in the competition before his withdrawal just after the hour mark, taking his goal tally to 14 in his first season with the club.

Responsible betting is not about fear. It is about structure. A bettor who manages bankroll, stake size, bet history, and emotional timing gets more value from sports markets than someone chasing one dramatic slip. MelBet’s official materials frame gambling as entertainment and point users toward responsible gaming policies, account rules, KYC procedures, deposit controls, and self-exclusion options.A bankroll is a fixed amount set aside for betting. It should never include rent, bills, debt payments, food money, school fees, emergency savings, or business cash. That boundary sounds basic, but most betting problems begin when users treat the account balance as flexible spending rather than a closed betting wallet.
