Arsenal and Bayern's first defeats headline the best highlights of the weekend in top 5 leagues

The top five leagues of Europe delivered a host of different narratives as some leaders hold on to their advantage, some extended it while others allowed chasers to close the gap after disappointing displays.

Arsenal's seven-point lead in the English Premier League was reduced to four, Bayern's 11-point lead in the Bundesliga was reduced to eight, while Barcelona maintained their one-point lead over Real Madrid, despite falling to second before their game.

Inter Milan and PSG would be the happiest as the former was able to stretch a three-point lead to five, while the latter reclaimed top spot after RC Lens fell to a first loss in 10 games across all competitions.

Here is how they happened and the effect of the gameweek actions in each of Europe's top five leagues.

Highlights of the weekend in the top 5 leagues

Premier League: Manchester United ended Arsenal's home run

A frustrating evening for the Premier League leaders as they fall to their first home defeat across all competitions this season after Manchester United came back from a goal down to win 3-2.

Arsenal suffered their first home loss of the season, ending a run of 16 games without a loss at the Emirates, and conceded three goals in a competitive match for the first time since a 4-3 win over Luton Town in November 2023.

The host took a deserved lead just before the half hour, through a Lisandro Martinez own goal, but just seven minutes later the visitors restored parity, after Martin Zubimendi gave the ball straight to Bryan Mbeumo with a back pass.

United took the lead for the first time five minutes after the restart through Patrick Dorgu with a sensational strike from outside the box, and after a period of dominance, Arsenal leveled through substitute Mikel Merino following a corner kick.

However, Michael Carrick's team restored their advantage three minutes later in the 87th minute through Matheus Cunha, and held on for their first Premier League win at the Emirates since December 2017.

Manchester City and Aston Villa beat Wolves and Newcastle United respectively to take advantage of Arsenal's slip and move four points within of the leaders, while Liverpool dropped to sixth following wins for Man United and Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest won away at Brentford to keep themselves five points off the relegation zone despite West Ham United's win over Sunderland, while Wolves was the only team in the relegation zone to not win any points during the weekend.

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich suffered first Bundesliga loss

In a shocking outcome of games this weekend, Augsburg defeated Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena, bringing an end to an 18-game unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season.

The league leaders had won 10 and drawn one of their most recent 11 games since the Champions League defeat to Arsenal, which was the only blemish in what had been a perfect season for Vincent Kompany's team.

However, Augsburg, who had no wins in five games heading into the weekend, and lost all seven previous meetings with Bayern, ended up being the side that ended their invincible start to the season, inflicting their first league loss in March.

The Bavarians took the lead just after the first quarter through Japanese defender Junya Ito, who rises highest to head home Michael Olise's corner for his first-ever goal for the club, gifting the Frenchman his 14th league assist so far.

But Augsburg, who started the game well continued to push and ask the questions, but they had to be patient, a virtue that finally paid off 15 minutes from time, as Arthur Chaves connected with a corner and headed home for parity.

It got better for the visitors as they grabbed another goal to complete the comeback six minutes later through Han-Noah Massengo, who applied a simple finish following a brilliant work by Dimitrios Giannoulis.

It finished 2-1 to Augsburg, who finally won at Bayern since May 2015, while the result allowed Dortmund close the gap on the leaders to eight points after winning their game against Union Berlin by a scoreline of 3-0.

Hoffenheim, Stuttgart, Leipzig, and Bayer Leverkusen all secured wins to hold on to their places in the top six, while Mainz maintained a strong hold on the relegation playoff spot with a win over Wolfsburg.

LaLiga: Real Madrid tasted the top but Barcelona reclaimed it

After a 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the most anticipated LaLiga fixture of the weekend on Saturday, Real Madrid moved to the league summit with two points ahead of Barcelona, who returned to the top on Sunday after beating Real Oviedo.

Second-half brace from Kylian Mbappé helped Alvaro Arbeloa's team overcome a disciplined Villarreal team to extend his winning run to three games, as he is starting to win over the fans after a convincing display at a very tough ground.

Before Real Madrid, only Barcelona had beaten Marcelino Garcia's men at home this season, but after a dominant first-half display produced no goal, Los Blancos downed their host with two Mbappé goals after the break to temporarily move to the summit.

However, Barcelona faced a similar hurdle on Sunday, but eventually overcame it to reclaim their status as league leaders after three second-half goals, including a Lamine Yamal overhead kick, which conquered Real Oviedo.

The first half ended in a stalemate, despite the host dominating the play and asking a series of questions, but the deadlock was eventually broken seven minutes into the second half through Dani Olmo, who produced his sixth strike of the season.

Raphinha and Lamine Yamal added a second and third later in the game to seal a 3-0 victory that helped them mark their return to winning ways in the league after a sudden 2-1 loss to Real Sociedad the previous gameweek.

Atlético Madrid moved up to third following an impressive 3-0 win over Mallorca, but other members of the top seven; Espanyol, Real Betis, and Celta Vigo, all fell to defeats on the road.

Another win for Levante as they continue their quest to escape relegation, and now have five points separating them from safety after winning eight of their 17 points in the last five matches.

Serie A: Juventus beat Napoli as Inter extends lead

Juventus made easy work of Napoli with a 3-0 scoreline to help Inter maintain their lead at the summit on a weekend where both Milan and AS Roma clashed and had to settle for a draw.

On Friday night, Inter came from 2-0 down to beat Pisa 6-2, making up for their 3-1 home loss to Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday, then watched as their rivals dropped points later in the weekend.

Piotr Zielinski, Lautaro Martinez, Pio Esposito, Federico Dimarco, Ange-Yoan Bonny, and Henrikh Mikhitaryan were all among the goals as Inter bagged six in a single game for the first time since a 6-0 away win at Lazio in December 2024.

Later in the weekend, Napoli missed the chance to close the gap after falling 3-0 to a dominant Juventus, who scored through Jonathan David, Kenan Yildiz, and Filip Kostic, helping themselves close the gap on Conte's team to one.

Second-place AC Milan also failed to match Inter's win as Lorenzo Pellegrini's penalty denied them away to third-place Roma as they were held in a 1-1 draw despite taking a second-half lead through Koni De Winter.

Inter lead the way on 52 points, five ahead of second-place AC Milan, while Juventus, on 42 points, are now just one behind third and fourth-place Roma and Napoli.

Cesc Fabregas' Como moved to 40 points after beating Torino 6-0 on Saturday. Hellas Verona is yet to play, while Lecce moves out of the dropzone after their goalless draw with Lazio. They are replaced by Fiorentina.

Ligue 1: PSG reclaimed top spot as Nwaneri shines on debut

Bradley Barcola scored a late winner for defending champions on Friday night to conquer their stubborn Auxerre, a result that saw them retake the top spot from Lens, who were beaten in Marseille.

After missing several chances, Barcola finally converted one 11 minutes from time after being played through by Ousmane Dembele, to help Luis Enrique's team calm the rising nerves following their Champions League loss at Sporting CP during the week.

RC Lens, who have held on to the top spot before the turn of the year with eight straight league wins were unable to reclaim the top spot after losing 3-1 to Olympique Marseille, who are also desperate to stay in the race for the title.

Amine Gouiri gave the host a third-minute lead before Ethan Nwaneri scored a trademark strike 12 minutes into his debut following a six-month loan move from Arsenal a few days earlier.

Gouiri completed his brace with Marseille's third goal of the night 15 minutes from time, with Rayan Sangare grabbing a consolation goal for the visitors 10 minutes later to complete a 3-1 scoreline.

Lyon, Strasbourg, Toulouse, and Lorient are the other members of the top 10 to win their games, while Lille, who suffered a 4-1 home loss to Strasbourg, and Rennes, beaten by Lorient, joined Lens on the losers' list.
